It might depend on whether or not Lewin Diaz is picked up and dropped a few more times, but in theory, Belt makes sense.  Mountcastle and Stowers already comprise a RH/LH first base/DH mix, but Belt wouldn't take away too many at-bats from that duo.
David
7:01
When will the Correa saga end and how?
Mark P
7:01
My suspicion is that he still ends up with the Mets, just with a contract that gives the team some out clauses based on leg-related injuries.
Six Man Rotation
7:02
Given that the Phils are going to be trying to work in at least one rookie into the rotation at some point this season, would it make sense for them to go to a 6 man rotation? Besides, Wheeler and Nola threw a lot of innings last year again and were a bit gassed with the late season.
Mark P
7:02
It might be an interesting idea to explore later in the year, if it does look like any of the regulars are getting tired
Yo
7:04
What do you think of the 'we don't need to get rid of the shift, we need to bunt more' argument?
Mark P
7:04
I think people underestimate how hard it is to effectively bunt a major league pitch
7:05
And this is coming from someone who used to be a bunting expert back in house league baseball! #Specialist #TeamPlayer #AwfulHitter
Blue Jay Stars
7:05
Who do you prioritize for long term contracts for Blue Jays... Monoah, Vlad, Bo, Chapman?
Mark P
7:06
In order, I'd go Manoah, Vlad, Chapman, and Bichette.  For the latter, Bichette's shortstop defense and inconsistent bat are big concerns.
7:08
Taking a pause in the chat to address some breaking news....
7:14
Sadly, Liam Hendriks announced that he is starting treatment for non-Hodgkins' lymphoma.  On behalf of everyone at MLBTR, we wish Liam the best in his recovery and his fight.

Do you still get many questions about Adell trades?
Mark P
7:15
Every single chat.
Chaim
7:16
Casas for eury perez?
Mark P
7:16
Perez (and Alcantra, obviously) are said to be the two pitchers Miami isn't willing to move.  Since the Sox are similarly unlikely to move Casas, this trade seems like a no-go
Braves
7:18
Andruw Jones should be in the HOF. Why wouldn’t you have him in?
Mark P
7:18
The question was who did I think would get into the HOF this year, not
Er, not "who would I vote for"

7:19
Is there a trade market at all for Eduardo Rodriguez? Seems like an easier option for Harris to start cleaning up Avila’s mess in Detroit than Baez is
Mark P
7:20
There would be plenty of a market, and I'd be surprised if Harris hadn't gotten some calls on Rodriguez already.  But, moving him would basically indicates a hard reset on the rebuild, and that's not a step Harris (or ownership) wants to take just yet
Trade Coming?
7:22
If the Dodgers trade anyone to give a bit of payroll breathing room to stay below the Luxury Tax threshold, who would make the most sense based on salary and being somewhat replaceable? My initial thought is Chris Taylor. What say you?
Mark P
7:23
But as noted earlier, Taylor is coming off an underwhelming season, so teams might not be jumping to obtain him (or a good chunk of his contract)
Daryl
7:23
Who’s more likely to get traded? Giolito or Bieber
Mark P
7:24
I guess Giolito, though I don't think really the Sox will move him before Opening Day, or unless they're out of contention at the deadline.

As for Bieber, the Guards are probably a year out from exploring trade possibilities, as per their usual M.O.
Curious
7:24
Does Bauer get picked up by anyone?
Mark P
7:24
I don't think so.
FZ
7:26
Are the Giants finished with their disappointing offseason? Their acquisitions all seem to have possible major warts (with some big upside too). Did they really get better or just hoping 2021 happens again?
Mark P
7:27
I'd say SF is a better team on paper now than they were at the end of the 2022 season.  Whether "better" translates into contention for a wild card spot, however, is very much in question.  There's still plenty of time for further moves, but naturally that one big-ticket addition the Giants were hoping to make this winter didn't materialize
Pads
7:30
Hypothetically, if Juan Soto has the type of year he is supposed to and the Padres can not extend him and they decided to trade him in the off-season.  What type of return could they expect?
Mark P
7:31
Still a big return, as teams would have a lot of interest even in one year of Soto's services.
Jose Cruz
7:31
Do the Astros stick with Diaz or Lee as backup catcher or do they sign a FA to be the backup.
Mark P
7:32
I think the Astros are still going to sign someone.  Too much buzz around them looking for upgrades for them to just stand pat entirely.
7:33
The new catcher wouldn't be a big name, necessarily, since those types aren't available in free agency or even in trade talks anymore.  But even if it's just a veteran part-timer, the extra depth would help Houston behind the plate
Stanman
7:34
Surprise team in 2023?  In a good way not bad.
Mark P
7:35
I have been burned by the Diamondbacks a couple of times in recent years, but I'll once again tab them as a sneaky-interesting candidate as a dark horse wild card team.
Gavin Luxury Tax
7:35
Why isn't Mookie Betts the CF now that Belli is gone?
Mark P
7:35
The Dodgers don't want to add much extra strain on Betts, though I'm sure he'll get the occasional appearance in CF as the situation warrants.
Joe
7:46
If the yanks paid down Hick’s contract to make him a $6-7 million dollar per year player for another team is he tradeable? Joey Gallo got something like $11 million
Mark P
7:47
It seems like the Yankees would certainly have to eat at least half of Hicks' deal, barring some other "bad contract swap" arrangement.  Tying a prospect to Hicks might sweeten the pot for another club, but with left field still in a bit of flux, the Yankees might also just keep Hicks around to see if he can bounce back
