Do you see the orioles taking a step backwards in 2023 after moving forward in 2022?
Mark P
7:57
I suspect the O's will be at least as good as they were in 2022.  They won't be catching teams by surprise any more, but I just think the arrow will kee pointing up for the Orioles given how their young talent should just keep getting better
Just wondering

sorry, meant to ask why it is fine.  Can anybody sign a one year deal and then a 10 year deal and have year one be for the lower amount, or did you mean because it is the red sox, it is fine?
Mark P
7:59
Meant "it was fine" in the sense that the league won't raise an eyebrow over a one-year extension followed by a longer extension.  But if it was two one-year deals and then the longer deal, or something else more complicated, the league probably doesn't allow it

You timed this chat for the Vikings game as a spiteful GB fan. Admit it!

I just assumed Vikings fans would've preferred to read baseball Q&A rather than watch their team suffered another crushing playoff loss.
Too Soon
8:02
Is it too soon for the Yankees to move on from Gleyber?
Mark P
8:04
It feels like Torres is maybe a little underrated at this point, since even the "disappointing" version of Gleyber was still a 2.7 fWAR player in 2022.

Given the uncertainty over LeMahieu's foot, I doubt the Yankees trade Torres.
AA
8:05
The players will lose confidence in the front office and feel reluctant to sign extensions if the Braves start trading someone like Albies away. Agree?
Mark P
8:07
We've certainly seen plenty of examples of how trades can affect clubhouse chemistry.  This might especially be true of a Braves team whose core has played together for so long, but I'd also think that AA has earned some benefit of the doubt within the clubhouse.  Anthopoulos wouldn't move Albies for anything less than a major return, so if such a trade did happen, the Braves' players might be more excited by the talent coming back

What kind of return could I get for Carassco? I feel a regression coming this year. Could I then trade Mauricio for a SP?
Mark P
8:10
Carrasco is only under contract through 2023, but the Mets could still get something useful back.  Flipping Mauricio for another pitcher, however, seems kind of like a lateral move.  Maybe the idea would be to move Mauricio for a pitcher now, retain Carrasco under the "you can never too much pitching" credo, and then the Mets at least have the flexibility to let Carrasco go next year

Thanks for taking my question today!  It was my first time. Walk up music is??
Mark P

"Walking On Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox, which I feel is a sneaky hilarious choice for a walkup song

We've passed two hours, so it's time to wrap up the chat window.  Thanks so much for all the questions, and we're back with more next weekend!
