Odds Dodgers extend Urias and or Smith
Mark P
8:44
Smith is more likely than Urias at this point, since Urias is a Scott Boras client and only a year away from the open market.  I made this point last week, but Urias is close enough to free agency that the Dodgers would have to overpay to get him to turn down a chance at talking with other teams.

Cartaya's presence makes things interesting in terms of a Smith extension, though the Dodgers have already chosen Smith over one catching prospect (Ruiz).  It's possible LA might try to keep both Smith and Cartaya, using both behind the plate and at DH
unpopular opinion
8:45
The Cards have actually positioned themselves well by taking the wait and see approach with their young position players.
Mark P
8:45
I don't dislike the Cardinals' strategy, especially since they have a pretty good track record of developing good MLB players from their pipeline.

Recently both Trout and Perry have said the Angels aren’t done yet this off-season. Do you see one more starter?
Mark P
8:47
Famous last words, but it seems like the Halos have enough SP depth already.  That is, if they stick to a five-man rotation and don't again decide to adopt a six-man staff.

I'd have to imagine someone has interest in a Dalbec + Duran package. Could you see a deal to the Marlins for Chisholm  centered around these guys (+ others) to fill the 2b situation for the Sox?
Mark P
8:48
Dalbec has very little trade value at this point, and Duran's value isn't overly high either.  So unless those "others" are, like, Marcelo Mayer or someone, the Marlins aren't going to deal their best position player for Boston's spare parts

Does Cincy have any moves left in them if so what might they be?
Mark P
8:49
Nothing major, as it seems like the Reds are firmly in minor league deal/low-cost MLB deal mode

Any thoughts about how the new schedule will impact players in terms of travel time? It seems that longer east and west coast swings could be exhausting.
Mark P
8:50
This is definitely a question that front offices and training staffs are asking themselves, and 2023 might be something of a test year for teams to adjust to the new realities of the schedule.

Chafin seems like a great fit for Cleveland; gives them a second lefty in the pen, they’re short of relievers on the 40-man and he’s local. Can’t help feeling they won’t give him the guaranteed  years needed to get it done though. Agree?
Mark P
8:52
Chafin might lower his asking price to some extent to play closer to home and closer to his farm, but he isn't going to shortchange himself in his first trip to free agency.  There hasn't been a whole lot of buzz on Chafin's market to date, but you have to figure enough teams are interested that it'd be tough for the Guardians to win any kind of bidding war
Yuli's Agent
8:53
Where does my guy sign?
Mark P
8:54
Seems like it's down to the Marlins or Twins, at least as far as the public knows.  The Twins can probably offer more playing time, since their 1B/DH situation is more in flux
The Trade Market
8:54
It seems like there hasn't been a lot of decent trades this offseason.  Do you think we shall see some more or are teams still trying to quantify what their farm systems are after Covid and how it has impacted their future?
Mark P
8:56
Forget who I can credit with this, but a writer had a piece earlier this winter predicting a lot of free agent signings and relatively fewer trades, because a lot of teams now evaluate players in such similar ways.  As a result, it's more difficult for some teams to work out differences of opinion about players, unless a club has a particular need they're trying to address

What would it cost the White Sox to get one of TOR surplus 2b? The Sox can't really belive their in house options are good enough for a team "trying" to compete.
Mark P
9:00
Espinal or Biggio (or Merrifield) would be an interesting add for Chicago, except looking at the Jays/ChiSox rosters, Toronto's needs don't really lineup with anything the Sox would realistically be open to moving.  Could be that the front offices see things differently than, say, my humble self, though the other factor is that Toronto's 2B situation isn't exactly stable.  Unless the Jays have faith in Otto Lopez getting a bigger role, they might not want to move any of their current second base options

Is Bryan Reynolds expected to be on the Pirates since the addition of McCutchen?
Mark P
9:01
I don't think the Cutch signing impacts the Reynolds situation in any real way

The Dodgers have a lot of prospects that can make a difference this year between, Miguel Vargas, James Outman, Michael Busch, Bobby Miller, Diego Cartay, and perhaps a couple more. How many do you really see making an impact and forcing their way into an everyday lineup?
Mark P
9:02
Like I said with the Cards earlier, the Dodgers also have a good history of getting immediate contributions from in-house prospects.  While the Dodgers would obviously prefer to reset their luxury tax status, my guess is that wouldn't be open to that approach unless they had confidence that at least one or two of their kids was ready to step up

  • What do you think the Brewers want for Adrian Houser? Do they want prospects or MLB-ready player?
Mark P
9:03
MLB-ready help, the Brewers want to win now

Can you give me your division winners and wild cards for this season? I love hearing and reading predictions from the experts.
Mark P
9:05
I'll see if I can find an expert to answer to your question, but until then, you're stuck with my opinions.

My picks, as of this very moment on January 22....

AL division winners: Yankees, Guardians, Astros
AL wild cards: Blue Jays, Mariners, Twins

NL division winners: Mets, Cardinals, Dodgers
NL wild cards: Padres, Braves, Phillies
(Wow, I really went out on a limb with those NL picks, ha)
Twins
9:06
Do you think they’ll still trade an OF after dealing Arraez or does that not have any correlation?
Mark P
9:07
Seems like an OF trade is still likely, if maybe one of the lower-level guys
Nick Krall
9:08
With $50mil coming off the books next year, say ownership actually let’s me go shopping. Who realistically puts the Reds back in contention?
Mark P
9:09
"Contention" is a reach, unless in this scenario, Krall spreads that $50MM around on several players and they're all great in 2024.

Montas is hurt and out for awhile. Are we really going to rely on German to fill the fifth spot??
Mark P
9:11
Montas will miss roughly a month, and a lot of teams would love to have a rotation fill-in who can pitch like German
Eric
9:12
What is more likely, the Guardians trade Rosario or extend him?
Mark P
9:13
Trade, just based on how the Guardians traditionally do business.
Now, it is already January 22 and Rosario is still a Guardian, so it's also possible the Guards retain him (since they're trying to win in 2023) and then let him walk in free agency
Making up for CarLost Time
9:14
Dang, that's a terrible name - sorry I did that. Anyway, are you surprised the Mets didn't make a splash after passing on Correa? Do they have any big moves left? At the very least a Big Pete extension? I'm not even gonna ask about Shohei - well I guess I just did.
Mark P
9:14
Most teams don't really start the extension talks until deeper into Spring Training, so an Alonso deal could still be a possibility as an offseason headline
