Patient Pirate
9:15
When will my patience pay off? Seeing Cutch out there is going to give me chills, but will the rest of the roster back him up?
Mark P
9:16
It's been a tough ride for Bucs fans, but there's a lot of good young talent in the system.  If the Pirates start hitting on some of these prospects, the turn-around might not be that far away
Red Sox
9:16
Does Profar fit our need?
Mark P
9:17
Not really.  Yoshida is already set to play left field, which is Profar's primary position at this point.  He isn't a shortstop anymore, and Boston has other options at 2B
Dale
9:17
Do you ever remember a year when there was virtually nothing left in FA by the middle of January?
Mark P
9:18
Not for a long time.  The difference is particularly stark considering that the free agent markets really dragged in the last couple of (non-lockout) offseasons
Pat Gillick's biggest fan
9:19
Is Zach Greinke a good fit for the Blue Jays?
Mark P
9:20
Even at Greinke's age, I think I'd feel better about him as a fifth starter than Kikuchi or White.
Paul from Seattle
9:22
Will the Mariners go back to the playoffs?
Mark P
9:22
I believe so.  Seattle's core is still very strong, and I think there's still a gap between the Houston/Seattle tier and the Texas/Anaheim tier in the AL West
Guy
9:23
What’s your favorite MLB jersey that you own?
Mark P
9:23
An old-school Roberto Clemente Pirates jersey
Larry
9:23
That would be sad if no one gets selected into the HOF tues.  I think we need some new voters if that’s the case.
Mark P
9:25
The BBWAA has done a good job in recent years of bringing some new voters into the fold, and pruning out some older voters who either no longer cover baseball or don't care much about voting.

But, differences of opinion still inevitably happen.  I personally think Rolen and Helton (and a few others on the ballot) should be in Cooperstown, but this year's list doesn't have any true slam-dunk names.  If Beltran didn't have the Astros scandal attached to him, I suspect he would've pretty easily gotten in
Roger Dorn
9:26
Let’s stop pretending Jazz is a hero for agreeing to switch to CF from 2B. We all know CFs get paid way better than 2Bs and he was the real winner in that trade
Mark P
9:27
And who knows more about cashing checks than Roger Dorn?!

It's a risky move for the Marlins, though one that could be overturned relatively quickly in a month or two if things aren't working out.  But, if Jazz can be at least a passable CF, that's a really nice solution to a longstanding problem for Miami
My mom still loves me
9:27
Will the fish move another starter?
Mark P
9:28
Kim Ng downplayed this idea, but the Marlins have enough pitching depth that I could see them moving a lower-level, further-from-the-majors guy in their system in a smaller trade
Mr. Baseball
9:29
Where do you see Michael Wacha signing? Minnesota? Baltimore?
Mark P
9:30
The O's are the likelier of those two, since the Twins now seem pretty set for rotation depth after the Lopez deal.

Nothing lately with Britton
Mark P
9:31
He had a throwing session this past week, with scouts from several teams in attendance.  No updates yet on if any stepped forward with contract offers
Or at least with offers that Britton found interesting.
Mister E. Person
9:31
Is a reunion between Zack Britton and the Orioles realistic?
Mark P
9:32
That would be a fun reunion, sure

Back to the Athletics/Mets contrast.  The CBA is in place for several years. There doesn't seem to be an opening before that to make changes. How do we get some momentum for change and what could the change look like?
Mark P
9:34
The Athletics' lease at the Coliseum is up after the 2024 season, so we'll have some clarity on their situation in particular relatively soon --- whether that's a new Oakland ballpark or (maybe more likely) playing in a new city.

So in that sense, the A's should (?) be removed from the competitive balance debate, if a move or a new ballpark allows them to start spending any kind of normal level.

Why isn’t Dale Murphy in the Hall of Fame? Do you think the veterans committee will vote him in?
Mark P
9:36
Murphy has been hurt by his relatively short prime, as he was one of the best players in baseball for about six years, but pretty ordinary before and (thanks to injuries) after.  He did garner a good chunk of votes on the most recent veterans committee ballot, however, so Murphy might yet have a chance at election in the future
Ed
9:36
You came up with your division/wild card winners quickly.  Which means most teams don't have a chance.
Mark P
9:37
Given my sorry history of preseason picks, the 18 teams I didn't mention should feel pretty happy.
3B
9:38
If you were a GM and you could pick any 3B to play on your team to win for the 2023 season, who would it be?
Mark P
9:39
Any 3B, regardless of contract and just based on baseball?  Machado
Ohtani

Tell me something positive about our pitching besides me
Mark P
9:40
I like the Angels rotation quite a bit, actually. If Tyler Anderson can continue his good form, they could be sneaky-excellent

Could a Gary Sanchez return to Minnesota happen?  He could be a righthanded compliment to Kiriloff...and he played some first for them last year...and be a back up catcher/DH.
Mark P
9:41
Seemed unlikely even before the Twins made the bigger move of adding Vazquez
Buccos
9:42
I love that the Bucs have spent “some” money on free agents this off-season. Can they get to 75 wins?
Mark P
9:44
The Cardinals will still be very good, the Brewers might take a step back but should still be good, the Cubs will be better, the Reds won't be any good.....I'm not sure I see Pittsburgh getting quite to 75, but for a team who has dropped 100 games in each of the last two years, getting to "only" 90 losses is an improvement
