GM in Exile
8:34
Would you be surprised if Eppler was replaced as NYM GM by mid 2023? Cohen would also love to have Epstein or Stearns as (PoBOps) Of course. Seems to me they missed out on many inexpensive complementary players this offseason esp. in OF. Bassit was a keeper also. I can see the strategy of wanting to give 2 or 3 AAA players (like Alvarez, Baty & others) an opportunity to make the leap and provide an offensive boost etc. I also thought NYY signing Minaya and Sabaen as Special Assistants as a smart move. Your thoughts Please. IMHO NYM should have paid UP to sign Springer and Realmuto in year 1. Eppler link to Ohtani is a LONGSHOT <15%. He stays on west coast somewhere.

Mid-2023 seems too early, but if the Mets were an early out in the playoffs or (disastrously) missed the postseason entirely, it is very easy to see Eppler fired

Is Profar basically just waiting for an OF to get injured during spring training?
Mark P
8:36
It's starting to seem that way, unless he drops his asking price (whether that's less money on a two-year deal, or just a one-year deal)

What WC team from last year will win a division this year ?

Will the padres add a staring pitcher or 2 before spring training or at least start of the season?  and who?
Mark P
8:41
The Padres are in a bit of a tough spot for attracting pitching depth, since if you're a decent starter-type who has options, wouldn't you rather join a team with more of a clear opportunity in the rotation?  Rather than join a Padres team and kind of just have to wait for someone to get injured?
IL-ing
8:42
When can players be placed on the 60-day IL (and free up 40-man roster spots)? When Pitchers & Catchers report? Could that open up some trade activity for teams who would rather not DFA anyone to make room for a trade acquisition, especially if they know they'll have room soon?
Mark P
8:43
I'm not sure of the official day, but yes, the 60-day IL does indeed open up soon after Spring Training begins.

And this is certainly a logical point, considering that most teams have full 40-man rosters right now.

If Ian Anderson and Bryce elder have a good battle for the 5 spot does the loser gain value in a deadline deal?
Mark P
8:44
The Braves probably want to keep the other guy as depth in the event of another rotation injury
John
8:44
Would you consider Jackson Holliday as a realistic trade piece with so much depth at infield?
Mark P
8:45
Doubtful.  If anything, Holliday might make some of other good infield prospects more likely to be dealt, since you'd imagine Baltimore would move them before moving the 1-1 pick

If the Angels can stay relatively healthy - and it’s a big IF - do you see them making the playoffs?
Mark P
8:45
The unfortunate part for the Angels (and their fans) is that even if the team stays healthy, they still might not be good enough to crack the postseason field.  There are a lot of good teams in the AL, and in the AL West alone.
Felix Hernandez

Do I have a chance to be in the HOF? How many years?
Mark P
8:49
I suspect he has a very solid chance.  Some rough years at the tail end of his career, but King Felix was one of the game's best for a good decade.  Plus he has the "legacy bonuses" of the perfect game, and being a one-team player

This my year for MOY?
Mark P
8:50
Manager of the Year is usually more like "manager of the team who makes the biggest improvement," so the Mariners probably won't qualify.

Eduardo Rodriguez for Ha Seong Kim, who says no?
Mark P
8:52
E-Rod can opt out of his contract after 2023, so I doubt the Padres give up Kim for what might be one year of Rodriguez
Johan Santana
8:54
My career and Felix's are very comparable, no?  I even have more WAR than Felix and had a couple more dominant seasons than he did.  Seems like a travesty I wasn't given more consideration for Cooperstown.
Mark P
8:56
Santana's relatively short career is a knock against him, but in terms of peak performance, he was exceptional at his best.  I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the nod from a veterans committee in the future

Better 2023 season, Haniger or Conforto?
Mark P
8:58
My pick is Haniger just because Conforto is an x-factor after missing an entire season

Why doesn’t MLB have a salary floor?
Mark P
9:00
Because the owners would want a salary cap along with any floor, and the MLBPA is totally opposed to a cap

Some fans are way to egar for there team to start a rebuild, there are better options like spending some dough to augment the current 26 man
Mark P
9:04
This is a fair point, since the success of the Cubs and Astros has convinced a lot of fans that their team is just a few rough years away from building enough young talent to become a champion.

And, for some fans of teams kind of stuck in the middle, I can understand this logic.  Spending to help an active roster makes a team better, but perhaps not into a real contender or even a playoff team.
T O’Neill

Am I the “missing” big bat the Cards need this year?
Mark P
9:06
O'Neill returning to his 2021 form would be an enormous boost for the Cardinals.

Why do teams that attempt to field competitive teams accept the deliberate tankers, seemingly without complaint? Draft picks and revenue sharing reward tanking at the expense of the teams that at least try
Mark P
9:08
Higher-revenue teams certainly have some complaints over teams who take revenue-sharing funds and seemingly don't re-invest in their rosters.

But, if you're a team in a division with two clubs that are tanking....well, that's two fewer teams to worry about, and it eases your path into the playoffs
