Wait, someone on the Braves hasn't signed an extension yet??

Wright hasn't reached arbitration eligibility yet, and can't reach free agency until after the 2026 season.  So Atlanta already has a good chunk of control, plus Wright is entering his age-27 season.  That means a longer-term extension would start covering his age-31 years and upwards, which might be post-prime.

Since 2022 was Wright's first good season, it is entirely reasonable that the Braves would want to see at least one more good year before they add Wright to their long list of extended players.  Given the control they already have over him, Atlanta might also just be more comfortable going year to year to see how things play out

Seems like people sleeping on the rays. They were decimated with injuries last year. Just with better health and adding an ace in Glasgow in improving the 5th spot with efflin should get them in the 90s in wins. Not to mention the softer schedule
Mark P
5:26
As a fan of another AL East team, trust me, I'm absolutely not sleeping on the Rays.  Even a "lesser" version of the team will won 86 games and made the playoffs last year, and 2023 should have a healthier contribution from Franco and Lowe.

How impactful is it to my legacy to lead the Rangers to the playoffs and make a deep run during my time here?
Mark P
5:28
Bochy has a punched ticket to Cooperstown whenever he officially calls it a career, so in the big picture, success in Texas won't really impact his legacy.  But obviously, leading the Rangers back to winning records would be just another boost to Bochy's already excellent resume.

What is the ceiling for Corbin Carroll? He is a top prospect, the top D-backs prospect, and has speed, defense, some power, and hits for average. Could he be an all-star soon? Maybe even 2023?
Mark P
5:32
Carroll is well-regarded enough that an All-Star nod in his rookie year wouldn't be a surprise, and by all accounts he seems like a solid all-around player.  This at least establishes a nice floor for his career as an MLB regular, though "star" is another level entirely.

Anything new on the Kepler front??

Nope

What do the Yankees do with Frankie Montas now? He was horrible for the team from the Bronx and now has a shoulder injury that’ll keep him out the first month. Is there any option besides putting him in the bullpen? I didn’t feel like he could be a starter before the injury and certainly not now.
Mark P
5:35
Unless all five NYY starters are firing on all cylinders when Montas is healthy, I have to imagine the Yankees' first option is still to put Montas back into the rotation.  As underwhelming as his Yankees tenure has been to date, Montas has a quality track record.
5:36
The caveat here is his shoulder, since for health purposes, the Yankees might feel bullpen work is ideal since it'll put less stress on Montas, or require less build-up than preparing to be a starter

What would be your top 4 for Philly's line-up...before Harper returns....?
Mark P
5:39
Turner is a lock as leadoff man, and I'd have Realmuto cleanup.  Schwarber/Hoskins could work as 2 or 3 in either order, I'd lean towards Schwarber 2nd

How many questions come in per chat? Do you read them all?
Mark P
5:40
I read them all, but naturally don't post them all. There are usually around 1000 people in the queue, though that depends on the time of the chat (or, say, if there's a huge sporting event happening within the hour)

If they fall put of the race, do the Angels try to trade Ohtani at the deadline or does he make too much money for Arte to move him?
Mark P
5:41
Unless Ohtani has outright told ownership and the front office that he isn't re-signing, I don't think there's any chance he is traded, regardless of where the Angels are at come deadline time

Will teams be looking to lock up SPs to extensions as next years free agency class looks thin?
Mark P
5:44
Teams are usually trying to lock up starters anyway, regardless of the strength or weakness of an upcoming FA class
Jeff
5:45
Do you think Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will sign a short term extension like Bo Bichette or a longer term extension with the Blue Jays?
Mark P
5:48
Guerrero is already set to make $14.5MM this year, so a short-term extension would cover just 2024-2025.  Toronto's front office might take the same approach with Guerrero (i.e. locking down some cost certainty now and kicking the can down the road about a bigger extension) if he's interested, though from Vlad's perspective, he has already locked in a significant amount of money from his playing career.

With all the talk about the Braves shortstop vacancy, hardly anyone has mentioned Braden Shewmake.  He is on the roster and has triple A experience.  i understand he is already above average with the glove and possibly a .250 or so hitter.  Should he be on our radar as a possible starter if he has a good spring and others vying for the job under perform?
Mark P
5:50
As a later-season callup, certainly, since Anthopoulos has certainly shown he'll be aggressive in calling up prospects in big situations
5:51
The Opening Day roster is perhaps a bit of a reach since it seems like the Braves are genuinely committed to giving Grissom a shot at shortstop.  If Grissom can handle the position, then suddenly Atlanta is in "nice problem to have" territory with Grissom and Shewmake

5:52
Overall I think the Angels starting rotation is going to be better than the Rangers. Sandoval could have a sub 2.5 ERA this season.
Mark P
5:53
"Better than the Rangers" is an open question, but it does seem like people underrate Anaheim's starters.  After years of underwhelming pitching, the rotation was quietly pretty good last year.

5:55
If you are the Dodgers, would your rather extend Urias or Buehler. I guess take Buehler's injury out of the equation and pretend they are both healthy.
Mark P
5:56
That's a pretty big caveat to ignore!  I think I still might prefer to extend Urias anyway.
Free Jake Burger
5:56
Any realistic expectation left for the White Sox to trade Jake Burger to fill their gaping hole at 2B, or any rumblings about Moncada shifting there to open up 3B for Burger's bat?
Mark P
5:58
Last offseason, Rick Hahn downplayed the idea of moving Moncada off third base, and there hasn't been any indication that anything that changed.  After Moncada's tough 2022, the White Sox probably just want to see him get back to being a productive player, and might not want to add a position change on top of everything else

When is the first day teams can put players on the 60-day IL? Will there be a flurry of moves made that day with the remaining free agents?
Mark P
As for the specific day, I'm not sure when the 60-day IL officially opens up.  It's also possible some teams with injured players don't immediately put those players on the 60-day, in order to work out other roster shuffles

Haha, I used the word caveat in another question I asked you. Not sure if you saw it, but thanks for firing that word back, for some reason, it's one of my favorite words! You rock Mark!
Mark P

You're welcome! It's a perfectly cromulent word.

The Detroit Tigers seem to be a few years from contention ('24 or '25?!) Would the Tigers (Scott Harris) trade one of their top, cost controlled, young stud starters (Skubal? Turnbull?  Mannning when healthy) for young impact players who would better fit their future "window of contention"( SS Jackson Merrill and RHP Dylan Lesko from the Padres a fit)?
Mark P
6:04
Possibly, but a team like San Diego isn't moving one of their top prospects for any young pitcher coming off a major injury (like, all of those Detroit arms).  Also, Merrill is highly regarded enough that I doubt the Padres move him anywhere, but that's no lock given how aggressive they are about trading prospects for stars
In short, if the Padres were to move Merrill, they'd only do it for more of a sure thing than one of Detroit's pitchers

Out of today's players, other than Trout & Cabrera, who is a lock for the Hall of Fame?
