If Flaherty shows he is healthy do the cards trade him and get something better than the draft pick when he rejects a qualifying offer?
Mark P
8:59
If Flaherty is healthy and effective, the Cardinals will need him to help the team win.  An in-season trade doesn't seem likely, unless STL falls out of contentioon
Contention, that is

Contentioon is when Roger Rabbit's baseball team makes a pennant run

Did Cleveland do enough to still be favorited in the central division?
Mark P
9:01
They're still my pick to win the division, as the safest team of the group.  I have a lot fewer questions and concerns about the Guardians than I do the Twins, White Sox, Tigers, or Royals

I read that McCutchen has taken Hayes under his wing to help Ke'Bryan with launch angles. How important to Pittsburgh is Cutch as a mentor and an on field competitor?
Mark P
9:03
By all accounts, McCutchen is a great guy on and off the field.  "Mentorship" obviously can't be quantified, but if I'm a young player, McCutchen is high on my list of players to emulate

Aloha Mark, please help settle a debate. What are the odds of Miami being the winner of the hypothetical Machado sweepstakes?  Ballpark figure of 11 years, $330m sound right? Many people here think the Marlins will have the winning bid and I fail to see it. Mahalo!
Mark P
9:07
We haven't seen any evidence yet that Marlins ownership is willing to make such a spending splurge, so until then, it's hard to see the Marlins as any kind of contender for Machado
Jordan Walker
9:10
Did the emergence of Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbar ruin my chances of ROY? If so, which one of those guys do I inevitably replace?
Mark P
9:11
The Cardinals can mix and match around the diamond to find at-bats for everyone, since Yepez won't get a full share of DH at-bats, for instance.

Also, as good as the Cardinals are at developing in-house talent, they also have a pretty lengthy list of players who are good for a season or two, before starting to tail off.  It could be that finding a regular spot for Walker isn't a problem since someone else isn't hitting (or is injured or something)

Can I get Bryan Reynolds without giving up Painter & Abel?
Mark P
9:14
Both?  Maybe.  But given Pittsburgh's asking price, it seems hard to imagine they wouldn't want one of Painter or Abel in any Reynolds deal with the Phillies.
9:15
Also, from Philly's perspective, where does Reynolds play once Harper is back?  You can put him in CF, except a Schwarber/Reynolds/Castellanos outfield isn't good for defensive purposes.  It also cuts off Marsh, who played well after coming to the Phillies
Paul
9:16
Since are Adames, Woodruff, and Burnes are not likely to stay in Milwaukee what other players would be extension candidates for the Brewers?
Mark P
9:18
Guys with more arb control remaining, as a way of giving them guaranteed money while the Brewers can buy out free agent years.

For instance, I'd be surprised if the team hadn't considered a William Contreras extension yet, if they're sold on him as their catcher of the future

How many ABs for Edwin Rios in Chicago?
Mark P
9:20
Rios is one of those players I always thought could break out if given more playing time, though his injuries unfortunately curtailed his chances.  I like that signing for the Cubs, could be a sneaky-good pickup

9:22
What team will Ryan Reynolds be playing for by July 4th?
Mark P
9:23
Bryan Reynolds will be playing for the Pirates

Ryan Reynolds will be playing for Wrexham, or maybe the Ottawa Senators, or maybe the expansion Vancouver Deadpools
Dustin
9:24
Whenever someone moves off shortstop, it seems there are clear candidates to move to second and clear candidates to move to third. Can you help me understand why Correa was an obvious move to third and Story an obvious move to second?
Mark P
9:25
Strength of throwing arm is usually the biggest factor, plus range, footwork, hands, etc.

9:25
Is there any trade market for Kikuchi or White?
Mark P
9:26
Hard to imagine there's much of a market for either, and particularly not Kikuchi given his salary
Kosei Tanaka
9:27
Is there a chance the Dodgers miss the playoffs
Mark P
9:27
It wouldn't be a surprise if the Padres pass them for the division title, even it would be a big surprise if the Dodgers declined to the extent that they didn't even make the bracket

Doesn’t Chris Flexen make a ton of sense for the Yankees? The Mariners have an excess of starting pitching. Would Cashman be willing to part with Torres to get him?
Mark P
9:32
NYY aren't trading Torres for one year of a fifth starter who might not be better of their in-house candidates

Who is the next young player to sign a Julio Rodriguez type contract?
Mark P
9:35
While certainly the Orioles would have interest in locking up Rutschman, it is very possible the J-Rod deal is a unicorn of a contract, as the perfect storm of a can't-miss young star, a creative front office, and a team with money to spend

9:36
Will the Giants season be closer to their 2021 record or 2022?
Mark P
9:37
Since I just used the term "perfect storm," it seems increasingly likely that the 2021 Giants were a case of absolutely everything breaking right for a team.  While I do think SF will be better than they were last year, topping even 90 wins (let alone approaching 107) will be tough

Hard to pick against Fried, even with all of Strider's potential.
