Haha, I'm not the guy on staff who's the big Twins supporter, and Steve is always realistic about his team.

I wouldn't say I'm down on the Twins, per se, and naturally I'm a lot more keen on their chances with Correa and Lopez on the roster.  But, for me their bullpen is a question mark, they're counting on a lot of as-yet-unproven guys in the outfield, and Buxton is no guarantee to play even two-thirds of the games

MW's question is funny because I was going to ask you if you thought O'Neill Cruz will get a Julio type extension?
Mark P
9:43
Rodriguez's contract guarantees him at least $210MM.  The Pirates aren't spending $210MM on their entire team over the next two years, let alone spend it on one guy
The Rays
9:45
Do we need that left handed bat or are we content?
Mark P
9:45
Still seems like a need, since it isn't like the Rays to be relatively thin when it comes to LH/RH matchups

Why do clubs go to arb with their rising players and then rip them apart, usually over a relatively small sum?
Mark P
9:47
For the league as a whole, teams want to keep salaries down, and they rarely deviate from whatever in-house formulas they use to determine a player's next arb salary.  While common sense would seemingly dictate that just splitting the difference or something on $100K is a better long-term move, some teams (and the league) prefer to draw a line in the sand
9:48
In theory, any criticisms leveled from a team to a player in an arbitration hearing wouldn't be something the player hasn't already heard from the club behind closed doors.  It's probably when a team brings up some previously unknown issue that a player would get upset

Should the Tigers lockdown Riley Greene on an extension ?
Mark P
9:53
The Tigers likely want to see a bit more out of Greene before they look into a big long-term commitment.  Plus, Scott Harris wasn't the GM who drafted Greene, so he in particular might want more information on a player he hasn't been tied to

Tigers June-July trade candidates to "jump start" their rebuild: Austin Meadows? RHSP Spencer Turnbull? Jonathan Schoop? Javier Baez? when they are producing in 2023?
Mark P
9:55
These are all varying degrees of plausible, though obviously a Baez deal would certainly be the trickiest.

9:56
Which has a greater probability? Orioles regression or postseason birth?
Mark P
9:58
Regression, since science would seem to rule out Anthony Santander going into labor during a playoff game.

Serious answer: I'll say postseason berth since I don't think the O's are going to regress.  They've turned the corner and, if anything, are going to improve.  Now, this doesn't necessarily mean they'll make the playoffs, but it's more a vote against them backsliding

John Angelos didn't say anything like "We are committed to doing whatever it takes to put a championship team on the field", and instead said Baltimore was a "small market team like the Rays, Guardians, or Brewers", when under his father, they were consistently a top 10 revenue market. I think he cares more about pocketing extra profits, than winning - what say you?

Why would Manfred say “when the Padres rebuild,” in his comments. Isn’t their plan to not have to rebuild anymore? Plenty of teams, NYY, STL as two examples are teams that are competitive every year and don’t rebuild.
Mark P
10:02
I paired these two questions together since the Cardinals should be the model for every "mid-market" team.  A club that contends every year, has a consistently good farm system, and still has a solid top 10-15 payroll every season.

If the Padres end up falling into the Cards' spending range while being perpetually competitive, I think San Diego fans would be perfectly happy with that.  Same with Baltimore fans, and the catch there is that the O's actually were spending in that 10-15 range during their successful run in 2012-16.  For John Angelos to specifically name the Rays, Guardians, and Brewers is a real sign of how there does seem to be a significantly lower spending plan in place for the Orioles

Kyle Tucker isn’t long for the Astros. What does a trade look like?
Mark P
10:04
Ruling out a Tucker extension seems very premature.
10:05
Obviously Houston could get a haul back in a trade, but even if the Astros don't think he'll sign a long-term deal, they might be more apt to just keep him through this window of contention
Tucker is also arb-controlled through 2025, lots of time for an extension to be negotiated

What does Seattle do with Evan White? He and Flex and decent trade value
Mark P
10:07
Flexen has some trade value, but White's is very low after an injury-shortened season
Not to mention his lack of hitting

I'd imagine the Nationals/Orioles TV debacle needs to be solved to open up the vault some more
Mark P
10:10
The Orioles are the ones with the lions' share of MASN, so it's the Nats who are the ones in need of more revenue on the broadcasting end.

Any chance Kyle Harrison breaks Spring Training as a starter for the SF Giants?
Mark P
10:12
Probably not, though I found it intriguing that Farhan Zaidi mentioned that the Giants might occasionally (but not permanently) deploy a six-man rotation
10:13
That might be an interesting way to break Harrison into the Show, without necessarily sacrificing innings from the other starters (assuming everyone is healthy and effective)
10:14
That's two hours, so time to call it a night.  Thanks for all the questions!
