Padres

Does Machado signing mean no Soto deal? Or would they move Tatis to sign Soto?
Mark P
9:17
Teams (perhaps all 29) will have to see Tatis return in top form and in good health to generate any kind of trade value.
I, State Your Name
9:18
If Dusty wins another WS this year, does he ride off into the sunset as a two-time champion or will he come back next year and try for a three-peat?
Mark P
9:19
Only Dusty knows how long he wants to keep managing, and if he still has the desire, I'd imagine he would absolutely want to keep managing a championship-level team for as long as possible
Tp
9:20
How do you think the cb bucknor issue plays out
Mark P
9:20
Bucknor vs. Marmol in a steel cage at Wrestlemania
Jed
9:20
Any scenario in which the ChiSox trade Anderson before picking up his option?
Mark P
9:21
Sure, if they totally fell out of contention and wanted to start a rebuild, with Anderson dealt so he'd have a shot at a ring
The Barber
9:22
Does Nick Senzel figure it out this year?  His star has grown dull over the last several years.
Mark P
9:23
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I'm pretty down on Senzel at this point.  If he can just stay healthy, maybe he could finally get rolling at the MLB level, but the fact that he's already sidelined in Spring Training isn't a good sign
Adell = Reynolds
9:23
Do the amount of Reynolds questions equal the amount of Adell questions there used to be?
Mark P
9:24
Great question.  Reynolds has probably taken the lead at this point, since there has been much more specific trade buzz about him than there ever was for Adell.
Phil Nevin
9:24
Am I on the hot seat? The assumption was I only kept my job because with the sale of the team there was going to be a complete overhaul and might as well not hire a new manager just to fire them later
Mark P
9:24
With only a one-year deal, there's definitely plenty of pressure on Nevin to win.  Another lackluster deal for Anaheim probably means another new skipper in 2024
Pedro Grifol
9:25
I've seen a lot of "if the White Sox are out of contention at the deadline..." questions, but what if we are still in it?  Does ownership greenlight a significant deadline acquisition?  If so, who are some realistic trade targets?
Mark P
9:25
Depends on what specific needs are in play at midseason or who's hurt/struggling/etc.  But in general, the White Sox need pitching now, and that need would seemingly loom larger if they're in a playoff race
Chaim Bloom
9:27
Will I be fired if the Red Sox come in last place again ?
Mark P
9:28
Bloom's assignment was to overhaul Boston's baseball operations (and the farm system) as a whole, but obviously a lack of on-field success wasn't expected.  If the Red Sox struggle again, I have to imagine he'd be fired, based on how quick ownership was to move Dombrowski and Cherington even despite recent championships
Twins fan
9:29
What concerns you about the twins this next season?
Mark P
9:30
Buxton's ability to stay healthy, I guess Correa's ability to stay healthy (which wouldn't have been a consideration prior to all the drama this offseason), the lack of proven MLB ability from most of the other outfielders, the bullpen, and perhaps whether or not Maeda is ready to return in good form after his TJ surgery
Randy
9:31
The Blue Jays only have Tim Mayza from the left side in the bullpen. Shouldn’t they at least look at Britton ?
Mark P
9:32
Don't forget Paul Fry!

The Jays' lack of LHP depth is an issue on paper, though they did get good results against left-handed hitters last season.  Adding Britton makes sense, but there's a question of how much he has left after two lost seasons, and his desired price tag
Brewers Fan
9:33
If everything goes right what do you think our ceiling is this year?
Mark P
9:35
The World Series.  "Everything" going right for the Brewers means their aces continue to pitch like aces, their bullpen is strong again, Mitchell breaks out, Yelich returns to his old MVP form, Hiura finally gets on track, and it's all sunshine and roses in Milwaukee.

Obviously this is a long list of things, but the Brewers can challenge for the trophy if fortune is on their side
James Van Der Snake
9:35
What has to go right for the DBacks to snake into the last NL wild card spot with 86 wins
Mark P
9:36
I assume James Van Der Snake is the star of "Don't Trust The Backs In Apartment 23"

Anyway, I'm hesitant that 86 wins would be enough to make the playoffs, since the D'Backs would have to be counting on at least one or maybe two other contenders in the NL to have dropoffs.
Concerned White Sox Fan
9:37
I keep seeing it said in these chats that the White Sox could be out of contention at the deadline.  I strongly agree that the White Sox should have been way more aggressive this offseason and Jerry Reinsdorf should have opened the purse strings but this isn't a bad team.  Do you think the White Sox are obviously worse than the other teams in the AL Central?  How likely do you think it is that they will really be out of contention at the deadline?
Mark P
9:38
Right now I'd rank Chicago third in the Central, behind the Guardians and Twins but ahead (by a fair margin) of KC and Detroit.

It could be that 2022 was the White Sox version of a season from hell, and if this team's floor is a .500 record, that's still pretty good.  However, they just have too many questions for me to see them as playoff contenders right now, though I'm willing to be surprised
9:39
Weirdly, I think I'm more confident of Chicago's chances this year than last year, since I always had a vague feeling they were going to underwhelm.  Then again, Detroit was my AL Central pick last offseason, so....
Greatest Trade That Never Was
9:40
Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio trade was very close to happening and would have changed the course of two franchises. Do you know why it never happened ?
Mark P
9:41
"Very close to happening" is overblown, as this particular trade discussion seems to have been pretty widely over-exaggerated by history.

Any new news on Yuli Gurriel?  I find it amazing that a batting title winner from 2 years ago can't find a job, even at the age of 39.
Mark P
9:43
Not much buzz lately, and between Gurriel's age and his struggles last year, it isn't a surprise.  Even with 2021's success, teams are very wary when it comes to older players who suddenly seem to fall off a cliff

Joe D was over-rated.

This may be a worse take than my "the Tigers will win the 2022 AL Central" prediction

Dodgers have Dalton Rushing, Diego Cartaya, and Will Smith at C. Do you think they’re more likely to extend Smith or trade him?
Mark P
9:47
Smith still has two more arb years remaining, so the Dodgers don't need to be rushing (pun!) into any decision just yet.  Plus, they were already high enough on Smith to move Ruiz to the Nationals, so it wouldn't be a shock if Cartaya is also dealt for more immediate help

Padres are bumping up against having their top draft pick knocked back 10 spots. Who do you think they could realistically trade for salary relief without a major roster shakeup?
