Guardians
2:13
Do you see Cleveland trading for a big bat or a big starting picture this deadline?
Mark P
2:13
A bat seems more likely, since the Guards can seemingly just generate more starters from their bottomless farm system
Starting picture
2:14
I'd say the Mona Lisa would be the number one choice.
Mark P
2:14
This is why I don't know much about art, aside from the Vandelay Gallery

Is Jose altuve really an extension candidate? With a few years until free agency, and his age, seems like the Astros would be better off waiting to see if his performance declines.
Mark P
2:16
Altuve is a special case as the face of the franchise, however.  Tacking on, say, four more seasons to his current contract (taking him through his age-38 season) might be something both sides are willing to do, in order to ensure that Altuve is an Astro for life

Do the reds have any trade candidates this summer?
Mark P
2:19
All the pending free agents (Casali, Myers, Cessa, Weaver, etc.)
2:20
How much Cincy is able to get for any of those players is an open question, but the Reds are likely pretty open to moving anyone except their top young players

who finishes higher in the standings this year, SF or ARI? I think Dbacks have passed the Giants with all their young talent.
Mark P
2:21
Notoriously, I've been high on the D'Backs for the last few years only to see them underwhelm.  So sorry if I'm a jinx Arizona fans, but I think the D'Backs will be a good team this year, and finishing ahead of SF would't be a surprise at all

I read the dodgers are considering another move. What do you think
Mark P
2:23
They'll probably make an addition of some kind, whether it's signing someone like Iglesias or perhaps making a more significant trade

Size up the Rangers pen for me. Brock Burke was stellar last year, but losing Matt Moore will hurt, and I feel they are overestimating the contributions of Smith, Leclerc and Hernandez.
Mark P
2:25
It's true that Texas is counting a lot on Leclerc and Hernandez, but in theory if everyone in the rotation is healthy (granted, a very big if), then some of the Dunning/Howard/Otto names can help out in the relief mix
Hypothetically, maybe one of the starters can take some form of Burke's multi-inning role, and Burke becomes more of a late-game threat?

Why have the Astros not added bench depth? Good lineup, but not even a legit fourth outfielder. Seems like a serious oversight.
Mark P
2:28
The Astros have a knack for calling up prospects who end up at least holding their own, in the event of injuries.  If you want a dark horse outfield candidate, for instance, Justin Dirdin has been playing very well in camp.  (Hat tip to Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle, who recently wrote about Dirdin)

Will the tigers end up being competitive soon? If so do you think they will start to make moves again on the trade deadline or next off-season to make the world series again?
Mark P
2:29
Detroit might be one of the toughest teams to evaluate, just because we don't yet know if 2022 was just an exceptional "year from hell," or if the team is actually just not very good.

If they struggle again in 2023, some wider-scale changes might be necessary, as much as Tigers fans must hate the idea of a step back to rebuilding

Do we have enough to make a run for a Wild Card?

On paper, yes.

i don’t like the time clocks. Why does mlb think it will improve the product? Imo it’s waaaay worse.
Mark P
2:33
What's struck me about watching games this spring is now not-unusual it seems.  Basically, baseball under the pitch clock seems mostly like games under the old rules that just had a fast pitcher on the mound (i.e. Mark Buehrle or someone).
So for me, I'm embracing the pitch clock, and think it's been quite good thus far

Call me a disgruntled Brewers fan but I'm blown away at a lot of the ignorance out there among fans.  So, to be sure, the Brewers are NOT going to be trading Burnes this year, nor Woodruff or Adames.  The focus on this by other fans shows a lack of  .....homework shall we say.  In the offseason, that's a different story though Woody is going to say in my opinion.
Mark P
2:35
I tend to agree that unless the Brewers fall out of the race entirely, they aren't dealing one of those three stars at midseason.  Their situations are different than Hader's situation, for one.
Prospect analysis

Are Steven Kwan types getting more love after the recent trend changes? shift bans, dead ball, etc
Mark P
2:38
In some sense guys like Kwan will always be underrated, since prospects with big power potential or flashier tools are just naturally going to get more attention due to the higher ceiling.

But, it's a credit to the Guardians that they seem to be ahead of the curve on building a 2023 team in advance of the new rules

Thoughts on the Rockies signing Hand and Moose?
Mark P
2:39
Some logical moves, especially since Hand cost so little and Moose cost them almost nothing.  Neither signing is likely to put Colorado over the top or anything, but adding some veterans with bounce-back potential makes sense for where the Rockies are at right now
Andrew
2:40
Assuming the same AAV, who would you rather sign Soto or Ohtani?
Mark P
2:40
If age isn't a factor here, I'd say Ohtani just because an elite two-way player is so unique and so valuable
Ed
2:41
What are the chances that Gary Sanchez finds a team soon?
Mark P
2:41
At this point you'd think it might take an injury in camp, the same way that the Rockies' injuries sprung them into action for Hand and Moustakas
