A la Salvador Perez, what would be a fair, even up contract extension for Ozzie Albies?
Mark P
2:44
This would be an interesting idea, though obviously more likely to happen if Albies is healthy and productive in 2023.  A "make good" kind of contract is a nice idea, and yet Albies' deal is such a bargain that it has helped Atlanta create salary space for all their other extensions.  With a lot more money on their future books now, Albies deal is (if anything) even more of a boon to the Braves now, in its current form

Does Druw Jones ever wear Sedona Red and Teal? Or will he be just far enough behind the core that becomes trade bait for a deal before he debuts?
Mark P
2:46
It's pretty rare that prospects of Jones' caliber get dealt, so my guess if the Diamondbacks do contend and get a nice run going, Jones will be a major reinforcement coming in 2025 or 2026

Would Nicky Lopez be a possible replacement for Lux at shortstop
Mark P
2:48
The Royals had some trade talks about Lopez this winter, so it would seem possible.  But, they already thinned out their MI depth a bit by trading Mondesi, so KC might not want to deal Lopez and then put all the pressure on Witt and Massey as their starting middle infield combo

Why do the Tigers like Baddoo so much?   He struggles at the plate and with the glove.  Give someone else an opportunity.
Mark P
2:53
Baddoo had a very solid 2021 rookie season before he was caught up in the team-wide slump of the 2022 season.  If Detroit is indeed taking a step back to re-evaluate everything, no reason why Baddoo wouldn't continue to get playing time

Regardless of performance, Rosario isn't a Guardian in '24, right?
Mark P
2:54
If Rosario pulled a Jose Ramirez and agreed to a below-market extension, sure.  But, Ramirez was a special situation, and Rosario inking a longer-term deal isn't usually how the Guardians have traditionally operated

Is Volpe the starting SS on opening day?
Zac
2:55
Yankees starting SS on opening day? And Aug 1st?
Mark P
2:56
Cabrera and Volpe, in that order.  Just my opinion, but I think the Yankees are ready to give the kids a long look.

Did the Twins sign Salano because of a worry about Kirkilloff, Polanco or Miranda?
Mark P
2:57
Maybe a bit of "all of the above," which is what makes Solano a valuable bench/part-time asset to have on board

What is the beads and bees thing about?
Mark P
2:58
It is a random reference to an old Arrested Development joke from close to 20 years ago.  It is supremely silly that this has become a running joke in these chats for a couple of years now.....and yet it will go FOREVER

What did the Astros not do in the off-season that will end up being the key reason why they don't go back to the WS?
Mark P
3:00
Admittedly a hard question to project here on March 5, but maybe a lack of depth, or maybe not re-signing Verlander.

Or maybe, the Astros will still have an excellent team but won't make it back just because it's incredibly hard to win five pennants in seven years.

Why does it seem the only people completely writing off the Dodgers this season are their own fans?
Mark P
3:03
Fans are always tougher on their own team.  L.A. fans can't help but worry, whereas other fans from around baseball are like "eh, the Dodgers are a juggernaut, they'll figure it out."

How would you grade the Cards offseason and could they make a run in playoffs?
Mark P
3:05
I think they'll still win the NL Central, and since anyone can win once they reach the playoffs, St. Louis certainly has a solid shot at winning it all.

That said, their offseason was pretty negligible apart from the admittedly big Contreras signing.  While it could be that the Cards feel their young core is good enough to improve things on their own, it's a bit of a risk considering how other contenders like the Mets and Padres upgraded themselves.  (And, how the Cubs are now back on the radar as a division threat.)

Does Frelick make the opening day roster or does he go down for awhile?
Mark P
3:08
Taylor's injury increases Frelick's chances, even if his presence adds to Milwaukee's overload of LHH outfielders.  Seems like Frelick won't be long for Triple-A if he keeps hitting, so even if he isn't in Milwaukee on Opening Day, the Brewers will give him a look pretty soon

If a team has a lot of players in the WBC how is that going to affect their roster for opening day?
Mark P
3:09
Maybe not at all, but obviously teams will be a little nervous until the WBC is done and all their players are back in camp without any injuries.

You are rich! And want to buy a team. You have the money to keep up the current spending levels of whatever team you purchase. The ONLY the thing that matters to you is rings in the next 7 years...what teams do you consider buying and who do you ultimately choose?
Mark P
3:11
Am I allowed to increase the level of spending, or just "keep it up" (as in, continue at the same rate)?

If it's increase, then I'll take Cleveland or Tampa.  If it's keep at the same level, I'll take the Dodgers.

3:13
If the Dodgers are serious about a shortstop, they should engage Detroit about Javier Biaz. He should be available.
Mark P
3:14
Why would the Dodgers be jumping to acquire a highly-paid player coming off such a rough season?  Baez can opt out after 2023, but if he struggles again, he'll stay in the contract and leave the Dodgers on the hook.

Plus, Lux will be back in 2024

Is this the year that the Jays move Springer out of centerfield?
Mark P

Given how they acquired Kiermaier and Varsho, absolutely
