They seem to be close enough that you'd think maybe making the opt-out conditional might be enough to satisfy both sides, but that's just speculative on my part

What did you think of Senga Today? Looked impressive to me!
Mark P
8:44
Looked really sharp, basically the ideal debut start

All these extensions being signed for young players. Any word on if the Marlins have contacted Jazz to try to sign him long term?
Mark P
8:45
No real rumblings in that direction, which isn't surprising for a few reasons.  Chisholm is already controlled through 2026, and the Marlins want to see him a full and healthy season before making a big financial commitment

Can you still whip the ball around the infield after strikeouts with no one on base?
Mark P
8:47
Ha, that's a good question!  I'll have to take notice the next time I attend a game in person

Arizona chose to sell high on Varsho for Moreno. It’s working for both side thus far (small sample size yada yada). But Thomas and McCarthy are hitless… did Hazen trade the wrong guy seeking ceiling, not realizing what stayed behind May not be MLB caliber?
Mark P
8:48
I'll glad you mentioned the small sample size so I don't have to!  It'll realistically be a few years before we can really start to gauge who "won" the trade, or whether or not the D'Backs made the right choice about which outfielder to deal
8:49
Also keep in mind, teams were surely offering less for McCarthy or Thomas than they were for Varsho, and the D'Backs wanted to make a big move

What’s the record for most consecutive loses to one team? If the Phillies lose today it will be 12 in a row to the Rangers.
Mark P
8:51
A quick Google search seems to reveal that the record is the Orioles beating the Royals 23 straight times over the 1969-70 seasons

What I dont get is why the Giants didnt offer Correa a shorter deal with a higher annual salary like Minnesota did? Correa seemed all about the money, so literally 6 uears and 210 would have done the trick.
Mark P
8:52
The Giants' concern was with Correa's leg, and it didn't seem like there was much re-engagement with SF from Correa's camp after that first deal fell through.

Why aren't the Twins getting any national love? They have a nice group of starters, very good relievers, and the deepestvand most versatile position players.  There are 2 legit superstars and they are equipt this year to handle injuries.
Mark P
8:55
A lot of pundits chose Minnesota to make the playoffs, it's not like they were ignored.  After their last two seasons, the Twins still have something to prove, and Buxton's injury risk is just never going away, so I can understand the hesitation

Could the reason the Orioles surprisingly didn’t spend any money this past offseason is that they’re saving up for Ohtani or Soto? Could they realistically land one of them?
Mark P
8:56
It would be a major surprise, given how cautiously they've approached the rebuild and how ownership has discussed the payroll.  There's also the east coast/west coast factor for Ohtani, specifically.

After just three games, it seems clear that something has goosed the offense. It can't be just the shift ban. What, then?
Mark P
8:58
Not the shift ban alone, but the larger bases, and the step-off rules, and the pitch clock that might impact a pitcher's timing more than a batter's....most of the rules favored the offense, and we've seen some early indication

There may be regrets about these long term extensions in a few years.
Mark P
9:00
Some of the long-term deals will absolutely backfire, sure.  But not all of them.  And if a team can capture a title with a star player before they decline, that might still be considered a fine investment

Braves starting pitching is hurting. Do you see them having to make trades for starters and deploy opener strategies more often ?
AA
9:00
what do you think happens with the Braves pitching staff? Injuries to Wright and Fried. Anderson having a rough start in AAA. 2 prospects backing up the end of the rotation
Mark P
9:02
Wright is expected back soon, so that should stabilize things a little.  Atlanta's decision to have Dodd and Shuster compete for the fifth starter job was perceived by many as a sign of the club's pitching depth, but the glass half-empty read is that it could also mean the Braves didn't have as much depth as they thought

Did Profar’s comments seem to you like he wished he hadn’t opted out? Was Boras the one telling him to?
Mark P
9:05
I'd be surprised if Profar didn't have some regrets over how his offseason played out, since naturally he didn't expect to still be without a contract in mid-March, and signing a deal close to what he left on the table in San Diego.

Remember, Boras works for Profar.  Fans are quick to blame Boras for "leading players astray" or something, but if Profar ultimately really wanted to stay in SD, he could've just passed on the opt-out.

Will the Padres sign Soto?
Mark P
9:07
Can't rule anything out for the Padres at this point, but extending Soto will be tricky due to the immense cost and the Boras factor.  If anything, the Padres' other extensions might be a sign that they're preparing for life without Soto

How bad are the Tiger's, really?
Mark P
9:09
It's not good.  The Rays' pitching can do a number on any lineup, but that first series did nothing to hint that the Tigers have improved their bats in any meaningful way
Mike

Rays are looking solid so far another playoff year possibly?
Mark P
9:11
In our MLBTR staff picks this spring, I didn't pick the Rays to make the playoffs and then immediately regretted my choice the moment I hit 'send' on the e-mail.
So with my foolishness in mind, congratulations to the Rays on their 2023 World Series title
