Why does MLB want to expand to Vegas? It's too hot and its population base is so small. There's a difference between supporting a hockey team in an indoor arena that seats 18K for 40 games and a football team that plays in winter 8 or 9 games. We're talking 81 games in 110 degree heat and trying to fill a stadium of 35K or 40K.

A new indoor ballpark would surely be part of the equation for a Vegas team, whether it's an expansion club or a team that moves
How long
9:13
How many games in can concerns be expressed without them being overreactions?
Mark P
9:13
Six weeks?

Logan O’Hoppe AL ROY?
Mark P
9:15
While that may be a slight reach, O'Hoppe was a valued prospect for a reason.  That Marsh/LOH trade might work out as a nice win-win for both teams that addressed needs
Royals Fan

Good evening, The KC community is pushing back Mr. Sherman's downtown idea due to the last time we had a winning was '15, community tired of losing the last 8 years and ownership is saying they are not making money. Community wants the team to put money in the team before they give them a new stadium, who is going to win here???
Mark P
9:17
Hopefully this situation resolves itself without any hint of the Royals moving, since KC is a terrific baseball town.  With cities being increasingly wary of committing money to stadium projects and now just about every owner wanting a "ballpark village" type of addition to their stadium, it might lead to an unfortunate stalemate.
Sweeping
9:19
There's been a lot of mentions on baseball broadcasts of a pitch they are calling a sweeper, which is apparently a new statcast designation.  What exactly is that pitch?
Mark P
9:19
It's basically a slider with more horizontal motion, but it can somewhat vary a little from pitcher to pitcher

9:21
If their pitching holds up, the Cards are a WS contender.  Do you agree?
Mark P
9:22
Speaking of my preseason picks, St. Louis was actually my choice to win the World Series.  I'm not sure if I've ever been right on my WS prediction, so sorry in advance, Cards fans

What do you attribute to the seemingly enormous amount of pitchers getting injured in the past few years. Too much weight lifting? Travel baseball as youth?
Mark P
9:25
Travel baseball is a factor, since guys are pitching higher-impact innings at a younger age.  There is also a school of thought that says too much specialization on any one sport (as opposed to playing other sports) isn't good for overall athletic development, which contributes to injuries.

Another thing to realize is that here in 2023, we're also just so much more aware of player injuries.  Any IL trip, any pitcher who's day-to-day, anyone's rehab stint....we're getting updates on these all the time thanks to social media, fantasy sports, and sites like us here at MLBTR.

How long will Tito continue to manage? I don’t think fans truly appreciate his value.
Mark P
9:27
It's up to Francona himself, since the Guardians seem happy to let him manage as long as he is physically able and as long as he wishes to continue with the grind of the job.  At this point it wouldn't surprise me if 2023 was his last season, or he might stay in the dugout for a few more years.

And yeah, Francona is arguably the best manager of the last 30 years.  He's an easy Hall of Famer.

Is there any glimer of hope for us Bucco fans on the Reynolds contract? The opt out situation seems less than ideal
Mark P
9:30
The fact that the two sides have completely narrowed the salary gap is a very positive sign, in my view.  Not that the opt-out isn't also a big deal, but it seems like a smaller hurdle to climb than the sides still being $30MM apart or something

What you think of Moncada hot start?
Mark P
9:34
Not to overreact early, but getting Moncada on track would be such a huge boost for Chicago's chances
Hit it Out, man
9:36
Dodgers lost today despite Thor pitching a gem. Corbin stealing twice in a row, tied the game. How do you feel about the speed factoring into the game? I like it and think it will reward smart players.
Mark P
9:37
It's been terrific.  So much entertaining baseball in the last few days, it seems like these rule changes really unlocked something
Walk don't run
9:38
Is Flaherty's start of 5 innings with no runs but 7 walks more encouraging or discouraging?
Mark P
9:39
More discouraging, since Flaherty was bailed out by an almost record lack of clutch hitting by the Jays
ArtieP
9:39
Do you see Paxton helping Boston at all this season?
Mark P
9:40
Unfortunately I have to lean towards no, just because there's no certainty over his health situation.  Paxton can be effective if healthy, but one can't count on anything from a pitcher who basically hasn't pitched in three years
Billy
9:41
Did you see fangraphs rated SF the slowest team for 23? Do you think Zaidi underestimated the rule changes?
Mark P
9:41
No, because he said last fall that he wanted the Giants to become a quicker and more athletic team.  On paper, he sort of succeeded, but not really to any extent in looking at the club's roster
Springs big day
9:42
Would the Rays trade Springs for controllable major leaguers?
Mark P
9:42
Well, they just signed him to an extension, so I'm guessing no
Optimistic Rangers Fan
9:44
With the Rangers sweeping the Phillies, are we a legit playoff threat? Been forever since I was confident in this team.
Mark P
9:45
There's a lot to like about how the Rangers upgraded their team.  Again, the "it's still so early" rule applies to both good starts as well as bad starts, but Texas making the postseason wouldn't be a shock

Does Jason Heyward finish the season with the Dodgers?
Mark P
9:47
If Thompson proves his 2022 wasn't a fluke and Outman establishes himself as an MLB-caliber player, it's going to be hard for the Dodgers to find room for Heyward on the roster.  Obviously he can change his story by playing well himself, but my guess is that he's ultimately a backup plan
dirk shenanigans
9:48
what chance is there that Arte insists on trying to sign Ohtani only to lose him in free agency and get a draft pick -- how many years would that set the Angels back?
Mark P
9:50
Moreno has now stated on the record that Ohtani won't be dealt if the team is in contention, which naturally left some wiggle room for what happens if the Angels are out of the race.  It's also worth wondering what Moreno would consider "out of the race" considering that if the Angels are anywhere close to the wild card hunt, he might press on since he's so eager to break the playoff drought

At this rate'll have 50 by Memorial Day

has 8 walks through his first 4 games and leads the majors in OBP. Should every hitter take a week in ST to not swing the bat at all?
Mark P
9:51
It's going to make for some pretty dull ST games.  Owners can make up for the lost concession revenue during the regular season by having spring games that take ten hours to complete
