Cleveland seems to be setting themselves up to be competitive throughout the Ramirez era… when does the Kwan extension get done? Or is there no rush?
Mark P
9:52
The Gimenez extension was a fascinating move for the Guardians.  It's not totally outside of their usual M.O. since Gimenez was still a pre-arb player, but the dollar sign represents the second-highest deal in Cleveland history.
9:53
It really is a sign that the team feels some urgency to win while Francona is here, and while they're benefiting from Ramirez on that relative bargain of a contract

Are any current teams using the pure form of moneyball as depicted in the film?
Mark P
9:54
The A's didn't even use the form of moneyball as depicted in the film.  This is a rare case of Hollywood taking some liberties with a true story!

What future free agent fits best in AZ? Pitching seems like the need right?
Mark P
9:56
If anything, seems like the D'Backs will use the trade route to make their proverbial "next big addition."  They have a lot of really good young talent in the pipeline, and might create another surplus that would pave the way for another deal like the Moreno acquisition.

Max Fried back to the West coast to the Diamondbacks

If global warming turns Arizona into "the west coast" in the next couple of years, we're all doing to have much bigger problems than free agent speculation.

Serious answer: the issue with a D'Backs free agent splurge is that ownership hasn't really signaled that it's willing to go beyond a mid-range payroll. Plus, since the Bumgarner signing hasn't panned out, that might decrease the likelihood of the Snakes pursuing another free agent pitcher

Is the Cronenworth extension weird?  I am a Padres fan and I wonder why the team did that.  Do you think Cronenworth is the one who suggested it, and the team accepted it?
Mark P
10:02
Like I noted earlier, there's a possibility SD is preparing for life after Soto, and is thus locking up other players who are more amenable to extensions.  The decision to extend Cronenworth isn't exactly "weird" since he's a good player and all, though it's perhaps unexpected since the Padres already have so much money on their future books

Do you think it's possible Zaidi and Kapler are trying to phase out Joey Bart, because of his draft pick capital, from the previous regime? Essentially just trying to pave the way for their own 1st round C, Bailey?
Mark P
10:04
You often see executives be more open to trading prospects or former prospects that they didn't draft themselves, but "phasing out" Bart doesn't really help anyone. Kapler said it himself the other day, the Giants only benefit if Bart can become a regular MLB starter

I don’t like it when it happens, but I like traditions and haven’t seen it yet. Bees?
