What a difference two weeks makes, eh?  We're still very much in the "small sample size" mode, but if Manoah just hit a bad patch and if Kikuchi has really gotten on track, suddenly Toronto's rotation looks like a strength
Twinkies
8:45
Twins offense can't be this consistently bad right?
Mark P
8:46
Still early in the season, plus a lot of guys have already spent time on the IL or been banged up.
Mookie

Betts can play SS pretty well. What do you think of him playing there more often? It seems to keep him interested and excited about playing.
Mark P
8:47
It's an interesting idea.  If Dustin Pedroia hadn't been at second base when Betts was coming up in Boston's farm system, it's quite likely Betts might have been a star second baseman this entire time (or moonlighted at shortstop already).
Dodgers
8:48
LA has 6’6 RP Nick Robertson and 6’7 Mark Washington both performing well at AAA and sitting mid 90’s with their fastballs. Do you think Dodgers will trade out of options guys like Phil Bickford or Yency Almonte?
Mark P
8:49
They might find ways of getting Robertson or Washington into the pen without having to trade or DFA current relievers.  The Dodgers have been pretty proactive about calling up arms over the years, so if they think Robertson/Washington are ready, they'll get the call.

Or, loan them out to the Clippers or Lakers.

What teammates will I injure myself waving goodbye to this summer? CJ Cron and Pierce Johnson seem like obvious candidates to sell for prospects.
Mark P
8:52
The Rockies don't approach the trade deadline the same way as other teams, remember.  It's therefore a little harder to predict what they will do, but in a season that is already shaping up as a disaster, you'd think the front office would just cut bait on some obvious rental players.  Cron and Johnson certainly, Suter, Profar, etc.
Petr
8:54
Who will the Nats flip at the deadline? Should they consider trading Gray or Gore? I know they have years of control left, but that’s why they’d fetch a bigger return.
Mark P
8:54
Zero chance of that.  The Nationals see Gray and Gore as part of the next core, not as trade chips

Buster Olney said he expects the Rangers to sign Madison Bumgardner to take Jake Odorizzi’s 40 man spot. Bochy factor
Mark P
8:55
That makes sense, and naturally Bumgarner would like to both join a winning team and reunite with his old manager.

If you're the Rangers, however, sentiment only goes so far.  If Bumgarner continues to be unproductive, they're not going to keep giving him appearances when they're trying to win games

Scale of 1-10, how concerned should Cardinals fans be?
Mark P
8:57
2/10

Shouldn't Cards fans be accustomed to slow starts at this point?  And then the team catches fire around the All-Star break and makes the playoffs?
John
8:58
You buying the Orioles?
Mark P
8:58
Probably not.  The Angelos family doesn't appear to be selling, and I don't have two billion dollars

What have you liked and dislike form the Phils to start the year?
Mark P
9:00
In short, the hitting has been terrific and the pitching has been lacking.  The bullpen in particular apart from Alvarado has been quite inconsistent
Champdo
9:01
Does Hinch get fired at some point this season?  I know we were supposed to be bad but his strategy has cost us a decent amount of games
Mark P
9:02
Hinch's contract runs through the 2025 season, so the Tigers would be eating a fair bit of money if they decided to part ways.

It's a question worth asking, however, since things have gone so haywire in Detroit.  Moreso than just in-game strategy, but if the team's rebuild has faltered to the point that another rebuild might be necessary, ownership might feel another manager is more suited to such a task.
Nate Pearson
9:03
Who loses their spot in the Jays bullpen (barring injury) when I get called up?
Mark P
9:04
Bass or Richards might be the odd man out
DV
9:05
Why is having a 'designated pinch runner' a good idea?
Mark P
9:06
I don't care for that rule change at all, and I hope it doesn't turn up in the big leagues.  That would be even more of a fundamental change to the sport than stuff like the pitch clock or the larger bases.

I’m a huge Cody Bellinger fan and I’m so happy to see him doing well so far. Do you think he can keep up the consistency? Seems to me like he’s finally healthy and I feel like that is as part of what was holding him back. He seems way more comfortable right now and locked in. If he keeps it up, do you think the Dodgers could make a trade to bring him back? Our outfield can use an upgrade
Mark P
9:08
As funny as it would be to see the Dodgers get Bellinger back, it's not likely at all to happen.  For one, the Cubs are playing well and might be looking to buy rather than sell at the deadline
Mozeliak
9:08
Why am I benching Donovan? Am I showcasing Edman or DeJong for a trade?
Mark P
9:09
Donovan's been dealing with a shin abrasion, which might be bothering him enough that an IL stint might be necessary to fully correct the issue.

I'm sure the Cards wouldn't mind moving DeJong and at least some of his contract if they could, but a "showcase" probably isn't necessary at this point
Darren
9:10
Do the Dodgers package prospects with Chris Taylor to dip below the tax threshold?
Mark P
9:11
Taylor is making enough that LAD would have to throw in some serious prospect capital to make that happen, and that doesn't seem like the Dodgers' style.
Polar Bear
9:12
Do I win MVP?
Mark P
9:12
Alonso might not even be the Mets team MVP, given how Nimmo has been such a force.
David Bell
9:13
Obviously, the expectations weren’t high for the Reds coming into the season, but how long is the leash on David Bell before a mid season firing takes place?
Mark P
9:14
Bell's contract is up after the season anyway, so the Reds might just decide to ride things out if it's going to be a rebuilding year anyway.

But, you might have a point.  If Bell is a lame duck, it is equally plausible that the Reds might want to turn the page sooner rather than later, and perhaps get a look at a coach who they might like as a possible future manager
Ohtani
9:15
Cardinals chats have many thinking Ohtani should be traded to the Cardinals at the deadline. I can't see the Cardinals spending for a rental and praying he resigns with us. I don't see the Cardinals paying him that long and large of a contract when he's a free agent either. Your thoughts?
Mark P
9:17
I wouldn't entire rule out the Cardinals as a trade partner for Ohtani, if the Angels did shop him at the deadline.  St. Louis prizes its prospect depth, but also has enough of a surplus that they might feel okay in parting with at least a few prominent youngsters for a unique superstar-level talent.

It would be on a rental basis, since I agree that the Cards aren't at all likely to be the team that gives Ohtani a $500MM+ contract.

ERod was pitching a perfect game... what if the perfect game went extra innings and the winning run scored with Manford runner scoring on a sacrifice... is it still a prefect game even though they lose?
Mark P
9:18
By MLB's rules, it wouldn't be a perfect game.

And if this did happen, Armando Galarraga would have to be on the mound.
Toronto
9:19
When can we expect Biggio to be sent down  or traded?  He's been given plenty of opportunities and is basically a guaranteed out every time through the order.
