On pace to be an interesting trade deadline candidate.  Sure, he's under team control through 2027, but...these are the A's we're talking about

What do you think of Mookie at SS? Adding that versatility certainly helps the dodgers but do you think playing SS wears him down faster?
Mark P

It's helpful that Betts can play shortstop in a pinch, but you're probably right in thinking that the Dodgers don't ideally want him getting too many games at the position.

If Rojas is back healthy, that can help, or if Taylor got any kind of momentum going at the plate.  Ultimately, shortstop seems like an obvious target area for LA at the deadline.

Chances Luis Arriez wins the MVP if he keeps up what he's doing the whole season?
Mark P
8:58
I'm pretty sure he's not going to hit .442 over the entire season, since if he does, he'll be the unanimous MVP pick (and rightly so).

But even with that gaudy average so far, Arraez is still barely top 20 in fWAR.  If he has some gaudy number like .370 or something, that'll still get some votes, but I think the writers might opt for someone with a more all-around contribution

Despite being in the running, last year the Brewers moved Hader. If they had to move one of their "core" this deadline, would it be Burnes, Woodruff or Adames? Or none of the above after seeing the response to the Hader deal?
Mark P
8:59
Barring a total collapse, I can't imagine the Brewers trading another star player at the deadline.  The players and front office have talked so openly about what a gut-punch the Hader deal was last year that it would be shocking to see a contending Brewers team move Burnes or Adames (Woodruff is probably a no-go anyway due to his injury)

Rangers are off to a good start this year so far.  With DeGrom going to the IL, should they make a move on Mad Bum to solidfy the rotation until DeGrom comes back?
Mark P
9:00
Given Bumgarner's recent performance, "solidify" is definitely not the right term
The Rangers can surely get more from Dane Dunning as a fill-in starter than they would from the 2023 version of Bumgarner

Not a question, I just got say how amazing it is to still be able to listen to Bob Uecker do the games on the radio

In a rare prospect for prospect trade, who says no……Guardians send RHP Gavin Williams to the Nationals for OF Robert Hassell?
Mark P
9:04
This would be a fascinating deal, but not something Cleveland would do at the moment.  Williams might be part of the MLB rotation at early at this year, whereas Hassell is still a couple of years away from the bigs (and hasn't really excelled in the minors yet)

Are the Rockies the worst team in the league? The A’s are the go to call, but the Rockies are letting up like 10 runs per game
Mark P
9:05
At least with the A's, they're openly tanking, so does that make Colorado "worse" since they were trying to be competitive?

It's a real stoppable force vs. movable object battle here.

On days when Gray and Gore pitch, the Nationals are beating some good teams. Should they considering cutting bait on Corbin and just eating the money?
Mark P
9:06
The Nats aren't trying to win this season, and Corbin is at least eating innings and filling a spot in the rotation

How much does Jacob Degrom’s injury affect the Texas Rangers?
Mark P
9:08
While I think Dunning is an okay fill-in, obviously Texas is better off having deGrom in the rotation, so losing him for 15 days isn't great.

Now, if it's "only" 15 days, I count that as a win for the Rangers.  The biggest concern now is that deGrom is facing another lingering injury that might sideline him for a while, though all signs right now indicate that this is something of a precautionary IL trip.
9:10
This is maybe ironic considering that the Rangers pursued Clayton Kershaw, but it could be that deGrom takes on a Kershaw-esque plan of spending 6-8 weeks on the IL every season for general maintenance, and pitches great the rest of the time.  I suspect the Rangers would sign up for that right now for deGrom's future.

Why are pro sports fans so pro tank? It’s like the normies who defend fully funding private stadiums
Mark P
9:11
I would say there's a difference between tanking and rebuilding.  There are plenty of times where it makes sense for a team to blow things up and start over, even to a pretty wide-scale extent.

But a "tank," in my view, is a team like the A's who are forced to blow things up for purely financial reasons, not for baseball-related or competitive reasons.

Bunt double, since that means something really wacky has happened

What would javy Baez cost
Mark P
9:15
While the Dodgers are thin at shortstop right now, a badly struggling Javy Baez (who has a huge contract, and an opt-out clause this winter) isn't the answer

Thoughts on the Cards sending down Jordan Walker? He certainly looked big-league ready even without elite plate discipline
Mark P
9:18
Walker isn't a totally polished product just yet, but he'd certainly still be in the majors for a team that wasn't overloaded with position players (particularly in the outfield).  I wrote this last week, but it feels like St. Louis might almost have to trade someone just to clear the decks a bit, since it might not be helping their players to have somewhat irregular playing time if everyone is healthy

Why won't the Red Sox put Garrett Whitlock back in the bullpen? He's an absolute stud there. Now he's just an average starter
Mark P
9:22
It makes sense that the Sox would want to see what Whitlock has as a starter, since the potential is clearly there.  They can always turn him back to the bullpen as a plan B, yet the Sox will give him every chance to stick in the rotation
