Sources indicate that before every game, Marsh bathes in the BABIP Lagoon, a secret spring that allows anyone who washes there to drastically out-perform their peripherals.
9:25
"Hey Mark, who are your sources for such a wild claim?"

Shhh, a good reporter never reveals his sources!

Does Anthony Bass seems like the odd man out when Mitch White gets back? Zach Pop and Nate Pearson have options but they also both appear to be good relievers which, thus far this season, Bass does not.
Mark P
9:28
Bass has certainly been the weak link in terms of production, but Pearson's options might be the reason he's the one who returns to the minors.  Things will also get trickier when Cimber returns from the IL, though Cimber has options himself
Cardinals
9:28
If mo blows it up does he trade Goldschmidt?
Mark P
9:29
By no means will the Cards "blow it up," even if they do keep struggling.  There is so much talent on this team that doing something wild like trading Goldschmidt would be baffling.
9:31
Hypothetically, if the Cardinals did keep struggling and actually did sell at the deadline, they'd shop guys like Flaherty, Montgomery, Hicks, VerHagen, DeJong.....all the pending free agents.  Maybe not Montgomery if they have designs on trying to re-sign him, of course.

Also, like I mentioned earlier, STL might look to move an outfielder for a controllable piece, probably a pitcher.  Sort of a hedge between outright selling and buying.

How nuts is it that Harper is potentially returning next week? Shouldn't the Phillies slow him down a bit just to be safe?
Mark P
9:32
I have no doubt that the Phillies are being cautious with their superstar, and would've hit the brakes a lot earlier than this if they had any real concerns that Harper was trying to rush back

40 steals, over/under?
Mark P
9:32
With 10 steals after just a month, I'd say 40+ seems pretty reasonable
Angels
9:34
If the angels are anywhere under .500 at the deadline with a large deficit in the division, do we trade off Renfroe, or does doing so send a message to Ohtani and we just hold.
Mark P
9:35
I continue to have my doubts that the Angels could bring themselves to trade Ohtani, even if they're out of the race.  But as far as Renfroe or any other natural trade targets, sure, they'd be fair game

How long will LA allow Dave Roberts to hover around.500 and keep his job? Do you think Mark Prior is next in line if they stay in house?
Mark P
9:37
It's not too often that you see a pitching coach become a manager, and to my knowledge, Prior might be more than happy in his current role and has no interest in managing.

The Dodgers front office has steadfastly stood by Roberts, and don't forget, Roberts is in the first year of a three-year extension.  I don't really expect the Dodgers to struggle for very long, but even if they did, I'm not sure how it's Roberts' fault.

9:39
How much longer do we put up with Dozier ?
Mark P
9:41
It's not like the Royals have many good hitters right now, but Dozier has particularly struggled, and hasn't been a good hitter for upwards of three seasons now.  Even with almost two full years remaining on Dozier's contract, I can see KC parting ways at some point during the season and just eating the money

What do you expect to happen with the Nats front office/managing situation? I’d think that a new owner would want his own guys
Mark P
9:42
The ownership search is taking so long at this point that Mike Rizzo might have built up a contending core by the time the team actually gets sold
9:43
If nothing has been settled ownership-wise by midseason, I can see Rizzo/Martinez being offered one-year extensions again.  My assumption is they would accept those offers, but it also wouldn't be a total shock if they wanted more security

If Fisher doesn't get the money from Vegas/Nevada, does he look to sell the team since he and Kaval burned all their bridges in Oakland?
Mark P
9:44
The lease at the Coliseum is up after the 2024 season, so something has to give.  If the Vegas deal actually did fall through, you might be right --- Fisher might opt to just sell the team at that point, pocket the big payday, and walk away from the whole situation
Beleaguered Tiger
9:45
With Torkelson and Greene both looking lost, and three former top prospect starters on the shelf, is there anything a Tiger fan can celebrate these days?
Mark P
9:47
They might not be as bad as the record indicates?  Detroit has played a lot of games against the AL East, plus Tampa, Houston, Milwaukee.  Apart from three games against the Guardians, the Tigers haven't faced any of their AL Central mates yet

Does taj Bradley and Logan Allen have staying power? And what’s the top pitching prospect not being mentioned that should debut sooner then later?
Mark P
9:49
Given how the Rays and Guards develop pitchers, I'm basically already counting on Bradley and Allen to be dependable arms.

We mentioned him earlier in the chat actually, but if you're looking for a young pitcher who's a little under the radar, Cleveland's Gavin Williams could be in the bigs before the year is out

Everything But The Girl's cover of "Downtown Train," a real upbeat tune!

In the last chat Simon claimed my Twins are contenders. Is the pitching for real, even with the injuries piling up again?
Mark P
9:50
The weak AL Central helps the Twins' cause, and it seems like Maeda's injury isn't overly serious.  So overall, I think Minnesota certainly has a shot at the division title.
Braves vs Dodgers
9:52
Atlanta will skip AAA and aggressively promote their top prospects and it pays off for them. The Dodgers meanwhile sign David Peralta over playing rule 5 draftee Ryan Noda (over 135 OPS + for Oakland ) or top 100 prospect Michael Busch. Am I silly for being frustrated as a dodger fan? I understand the nerds in LA are brilliant but Gallo over Outman last year was clearly a mistake
Mark P
9:53
In fairness, the Dodgers have been pretty proactive in promoting their own top prospects over the years, so it's hard to really criticize how they develop their kids.

Plus, within the small sample size of this chat, I'd seen enough "why don't the Dodgers get a proven veteran instead of Gavin Lux?" questions that indicate that the Dodgers are criticized no matter what route they take

Am I going to the All star game this year?
Mark P
9:57
With a perfect ERA?  It's looking pretty good
John
9:58
Are you buying the rangers hot start or do you need to see more?
Mark P
9:58
I'm buying it, it seems like they're clicking.
Plenty of talent on that roster to make a run at a playoff spot seem very plausible
Kim Ng
9:59
Who I am getting for LF? Any other reinforcements? Are the Fish for real?
Mark P
10:00
Miami's ridiculous 10-0 record in one-run games indicates that it's probably a bit of a mirage, but this franchise seemed due some luck anyway.  (And hey, talk about a great month for Miami sports teams!)
10:01
Offense is still the obvious need, as I can see the Fish getting a corner outfielder at the deadline and then limiting Garcia/De La Cruz/Sanchez to just one OF spot depending on who's hot.
