Do you think Jays will offer Chapman an extension.
trip to the mound
8:33
Why do you think Chapman is playing so much better this year for the Jays ? thanks   Any chance he extends in Toronto ?
Mark P
8:34
The Jays haven't been shy about spending money, but my feeling is that Chapman will sign elsewhere.  He's set to command a huge deal, especially in a thin overall market where he looks to be the third or fourth best FA available (and the best position player besides Ohtani).

Eduardo Rodriguez has so much trade value but that opt out clause is problematic. What can I realistically expect in return?
Mark P
8:36
If you're the Tigers, you kind of have no choice to view E-Rod as a rental for the deadline, since teams aren't going to give up a ton (a good return but not a ton) for a pitcher who might well opt out in a few months.

That said, it's not crazy to think that Detroit won't be sellers, since the AL Central is so thin.

Is Nate Pearson going to be given a more high leverage role eventually? He's throwing well but not getting big time opportunities
Mark P
8:38
I'm fine with Pearson just getting his feet wet as a big league pitcher, and staying healthy.  The Jays have no reason yet to really need to push Pearson, but if all goes well in lower-leverage situations, they'll gradually start to put a bit more on his plate as the season goes aloong

I would say the Dodgers are the favorites to sign Ohtani this offseason. Can you give me 3-4 teams you think have a shot?
Mark P
8:39
Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Mariners.

Obviously teams like the Mets and Yankees will be interested, but given Ohtani's previous preferences to stay on the west coast, I'm not sure how realistic it is that he'd head east

RIP Vida Blue. Despite three Hall of Famers (Catfish, Rollie, Reggie), a ton of guys in the Hall of Very Good (Vida, Bando, Campy, Tenace, Rudi, Holtzman, Bill North, Fosse), and three straight World Series championships (the only non-Yankees team to do that), why do the 72-74 A's seemingly get so little respect when talking about great teams?
Mark P
8:41
So many of the memories of the early 70's A's are based around Charlie Finlay's wild antics, not the fact that they were an incredible team.  For big-picture media purposes, it probably also doesn't help that Reggie and Catfish went onto bigger fame (and more championship success) in New York

Are the White Sox really this bad and how soon til a rebuild happens again?
Mark P
8:43
Don't look now, but the White Sox have won five of their last seven.  Now, I'm not terribly high on the ChiSox and don't think they'll be contenders, but again....it's still early, and the AL Central isn't a very competitive division

Why haven't the Cardinals brought up Dakota Hudson yet from Triple A Memphis?  He deserves a chance with nearly everyone else on the pitching staff (and front office) falling apart.
Mark P
8:44
He's been on the IL for the last couple of weeks with a neck strain

Chris sale looking better if he's back could get a nice haul at deadline
Mark P
8:46
The Red Sox need enough pitching that if Sale is actually throwing well, they'll just keep him.

And I'd still have doubts that Sale's contract and injury history would draw much big interest at the deadline, unless he really got back to "vintage Chris Sale" levels
Elias from baltimore
8:47
Am I going to acquire somebody's ace just like we did in houston?
Mark P
8:48
As noted in previous chats, the O's have enough prospect depth to basically get almost anyone they want.  So if they did feel like making a big splash, they could certainly land a big target (either a rental, or at the higher price tag of a pitcher under team control)
8:49
Elias has moved in such a relatively conservative fashion so far that it's hard to gauge what "going for it" would look like for their front office.  But it is increasingly looking like the Orioles are for real, and that the rotation is a need
RIP Vida Blue

Excited to see Ranger Suarez back with the Phillies next week?  Will his return make a difference?
Mark P
8:51
If he pitches like he did last year, absolutely.  But, I do have doubts about Philly's plan of moving Strahm to the bullpen rather than Falter, just because Strahm was pitching so well

Do you think that Royals will rebuilt there squad again, or just keep the kids and see what happens!!!
Mark P
8:53
It's been pretty grim in KC, as the pitching has once again totally faltered, and almost the entire lineup (save for Perez, Pasquantino, and kinda Witt) are badly struggling.
8:54
It's possible they might need to blow things up more or less entirely, since this generation of prospects might not have it.  That said, Rome wasn't built in a day, and since JJ Picollo and Quatraro were overhauling a lot of behind-the-scenes developmental and scouting practices, it might take way more than a month before we can judge how the efforts are paying off
Sweeper isn't a real pitch
8:55
What's wrong with Bobby Witt?
Mark P
8:55
The Royals' belief if that Witt is still kind of just ramping up, since he lost a big chunk of Spring Training time by participating in the World Baseball Classic but then never playing
Braves
8:59
Riley isn’t hitting great, players injured, but Braves keep winning. How good are they when fully healthy? Best in baseball?
Mark P
9:00
Speaking of my preseason predictions earlier, I ALMOST picked Braves/Astros in the World Series, and now I'm kicking myself.

A few struggling players isn't a big issue for a team with so many other people playing at a high level.  And you're right, if the Braves can get everyone healthy and locked in at once, they've got to be considered WS favorites
Josh
9:01
Do you see the Twins trading for another bat at the deadline?
Mark P
9:02
Speaking of teams that need everyone back and healthy, Minnesota's lineup will look a lot better at full strength, and assuming that Correa shakes off his early-season slump
9:03
For a team that seemed overloaded with outfielders, the OF might be a target area depending on what happens with Kirilloff or Gallo at first base.  (Conversely, they could target a 1B if Kirilloff or Gallo are in the outfield.)
Buxton's status is also a factor, since if he's able to play the outfield regularly again, that opens up the DH spot

we have to trade high on Mateo right?
Mark P
9:04
If that's the move, that thins out Baltimore's depth, unless Henderson or Frazier get going.  Calling up a prospect is a big ask of a youngster, joining a team in a pennant race.
