Something I've always wondered: is strand rate just the runners allowed by the pitcher who put them on letting them score, or do relievers letting them score count?
Mark P
8:29
Strand rate applies to the runners the pitcher is responsible for letting on base

Who will the Yankees drop from the rotation once sevry returns
Mark P

Brito or Schmidt

Texas has arguably the deepest offense in baseball; their starting pitching has been an absolute treat, even without DeGrom… but that bullpen.. where can they go for help?
Mark P
8:33
Always plenty of bullpen arms to be had at the deadline, but the tricky part is outbidding other teams since pretty much everyone will want relief help.

I'd be shocked if the Rangers hadn't already been on the phone with the Royals about Aroldis Chapman, for instance.

If it were running the White Sox (and assuming ownership gave you carte blanche) would you enact another full rebuild or smaller retooling?
Mark P
8:35
Among the MLBTR staff, I might be the most down of anyone on the White Sox, so I'd vote for rebuild.  This just seems like a very flawed and unreliable roster to me, and I'd be more inclined to start over and start loading up a thin farm system

Is Yelich tradable if he is playing like this?
Mark P
8:36
If he's playing like this, why would Milwaukee want to trade him?  Yelich getting anywhere close to his old MVP form is an enormous help to the Brewers' bid for a playoff run

Which team makes an early move and trades for SP before another rival does? I'm thinking ATL, HOU, SDP, BOS BAL ,StL LAD NYY NYM - Giolito MIL top targets
Mark P
8:38
It's relatively rare to see a team swing a major trade this early in a season, in no small part because the asking prices are very big.  The Sox might very well end up moving Giolito eventually, but Chicago probably also doesn't want to give up on the season just yet

Can the Mariners add a few bats?
Mark P
8:40
"A few" bats would be tough to manage, at least for a palatable trade cost.  Seattle's big hope is naturally that some of their in-house guys get rolling, since there's too much talent on this roster for such a virtual team-wide slump

8:41
how likely will the dodgers make a move near the trading deadline and should they target a pitcher or a postion player?
Mark P
8:42
The Dodgers are traditionally aggressive enough at the deadline that they'll look into both, but position player depth seems like their bigger need in my view.  Assuming everyone in the rotation is healthy, it's not *that* big of an issue that Syndergaard is struggling, since one of the youngsters could perhaps step in as the fifth starter.

Is the Joe Ryan we're seeing this season legit?
Mark P
8:44
Both the real-world stats and the advanced metrics love his work, so I'd be safe in saying that Ryan is for real.  What a great acquisition for the Twins.
Braves guy
8:46
The Braves are using up their bullpen arms in all these bullpen games they keep losing I think it's a mistake not to call up Dodd, Shuster, and/or  Soroka because yea they may not be tearing it up in aaa they can at least eat up some innings and save the bullpen.
Mark P
8:46
One of Dodd or Shuster will probably be up sooner or later, but with Soroka, Atlanta's not going to bring him up abruptly since they're being very cautious (and rightly so) with his health

Did you see Harper vs. Bird? Thoughts on that…?
Mark P

I prefer Magic vs. Bird

would Liam Hendricks be the thing to make the Mighty Jays unstoppable? What other than relieving Chicago of he contract?  If it is only Cash Jays win!!!!  He preferred the jays if they would match the Chicago offer.
Mark P
8:50
The first step is getting Hendriks back on the mound and fully ready to go, but you're right, Hendriks would look great in a Jays bullpen that has looked shaky at times.  But, then again, teams will be lining up to acquire Hendriks if he pitches well and if the Sox are deadline sellers

You mentioned the braves being hesitant to call soroka up because of his health but i dont get how its less risky for him to pitch in AAA
Mark P
8:52
Fair point. I meant more that in Soroka's case, they won't be hasty in calling him up because he hasn't pitched in the majors in over two years.  They're not going to rush him back just because of a rotation need if they don't yet feel he's fully ready to face MLB batters

Is Justin Turner going to be on the trade block?
Mark P

Doesn't seem likely, with the Red Sox winning games and Turner playing generally well

I have two bags, one full of beads and the other full of bees. Which one would STL want for Contreras?
Mark P
8:59
To quote Nic Cage, NOT THE BEES, ARRRRRGH

We floated the idea of a Contreras trade in last week's chat, but obviously such a deal would be extremely hard to impossible to pull off.  There are so many years and so much money left on his contract, plus the Cards all but announced to the world that they're not really comfortable with his work behind the plate.  What team is going to step up with an acceptable offer that wouldn't involve the Cardinals eating a bunch of money?

Good evening, what's your thoughts on Illitch spending any money on hitters this season or next? Thanks in advance

Detroit's quiet offseason hinted that this was very much an evaluation season for Scott Harris to see what he had with this roster, and if things were really as bad as they seemed in 2022.

While the Tigers aren't exactly tearing it up thus far, they're at least doing better in terms of wins and losses, even if the lineup is still badly struggling.  If the club makes some progress this year, I can see Harris getting the green light to make some bigger moves next winter.

Wow, the A's are bad. Any chance that Oakland gets an expansion team when this mess moves to Vegas? WOuld an expansion team be more competitive?
