Especially after tonight is awful performance, how far will the Sox go with this Kluber experiment? He's only owed around 7 million and they've dumped guys they've owed a lot more to in the past

8:05
With Whitlock back next week, the Red Sox will finally (knock on wood) have a healthy rotation for the first time all season.  So they could then start to explore whether or not to move people, but keep in mind, Houck hasn't pitched well either, Bello is unproven, and Sale/Paxton are both ever-present injury risks
There's enough uncertainty that the Sox are more likely to hang onto everyone as depth

Are the Angels we've seen so far...a win three, lose three .500 team destined to fall a bit short of the playoffs...what we're going to be looking at for the rest of 2023...and what do they need to do to somehow become actual contenders???  (and thanks, Steve.)
Mark P

Better starting pitching is the obvious answer, as even Ohtani has looked ordinary in his last couple of outings, and almost everyone else has struggled

What do you think about Astro Jose Abreu?  When does the organization realize that his bat isn't gonna wake up?
Mark P
8:12
Committed to a three-year deal, there's not much Houston can do right now besides hope Abreu turns it around.  It's been a really astonishing dropoff, since like many others, I thought Abreu was in for a big season

Shohei Ohtani for Max Fried. How long is there silence on the phone line and who hangs up first?
Mark P
8:13
The Angels go "forearm strain, eh?" and hang up the phone
Even if healthy, Fried is only controlled through the 2024 season, so Anaheim would want a lot more if they actually did move Ohtani

I understand there’s no quantifiable way to measure the impact of a manager but the Ranger’s turnaround sure seems like atleast 75% Bochy-related

The lion's share of the credit should be going to the vastly improved pitching staff, Semien playing like an MVP again, Duran's breakout, etc.

Does Chapman stay with Toronto beyond this season?
Mark P
8:17
My feeling is still no, since while the Jays have increased spending, re-signing Chapman to what will have to be a huge deal might push payroll to untenable levels

Think Donaldson gets DFA’d next?
Mark P

Seems entirely possible
It’s my birthday, please answer my question thnx

whats gonna make this a “successful” season for Chaim in Boston?  Wildcard? Second round? Fun, likable team playing meaningful games in the first week of September? What’s the bare minimum the Sox need to accomplish to keep the heat off him this winter?
Mark P
8:19
Expectations are always high in Boston, but if the Sox reached the postseason, one would imagine that would keep Bloom's job safe

Love what Arizona is doing so far. But they clearly need pitching help. What kind of upgrades do you think they would consider, and who would they be willing to trade for it?
Mark P
8:21
I can see the D'Backs bringing in a veteran rental pitcher type, since they don't want to block any of their younger arms or sit them down entirely.
8:22
The cost of such a pitcher won't be cheap, of course, since pitching is so sought-after at the deadline.  But the chances of the D'Backs paying for a rental player is better than the chances of them paying a bigger price for a longer-term asset

What’s wrong with Joe Musgrove this season?
Mark P
8:24
After missing a big chunk of Spring Training, it isn't surprising that Musgrove still hasn't gotten on track yet.  the wOBA and BABIP luck hasn't been on his side, so things should normalize sooner than later

Should the royals go ahead and trade Barlow and Chapman to the most bullpen needy contenders? Sure would be a shame if one of them got injured in the next 2 months.
Mark P
8:27
Chapman can't be moved until June 15 unless he approves a trade, but he might be eager to join a contender sooner rather than later.

There's always risk in waiting to make a trade, of course, but right now teams probably aren't willing to offer what the Royals would want.

Jays need to get things together quick
Mark P
8:29
If they were in any other division, a cold streak wouldn't be a big problem.  But all these losses to division opponents is putting Toronto in a deep hole, since there's no margin for error in the AL East

Brewers need rotation help, who do they go out and get? If anybody.
Mark P
8:31
Woodruff is expected back by the end of June, so that might be enough of a rotation boost that the Brewers might feel they can stand pat
8:32
Plus by then Alexander could also be back, and they'll know about Miley's specific timeline

are cowser, and kjerstad blocked to the point where they become relevant trade pieces?
Mark P
8:35
Not to any great extent, since between the DH spot and the Orioles' ability to bring guys along slowly, they might prefer to keep everyone.

Or, there could be a better chance they move someone like Santander
Rays
8:35
If you had to move the team somewhere where would you move them?
Mark P
8:37
Keep in mind I'm a Blue Jays fan, so my pick of "get them out of the AL East" might not be an unbiased view.  :)

But really, it's not like the Tampa area is lacking in fans, it's just that the ballpark has been such a problem.  Granted, it strikes me as odd that the top plan is a new ballpark at basically the same inconvenient location as the Trop, but maybe someone with better knowledge of the Tampa/St. Pete area can fill me in

this Eddie rosario/Ozuna/pillar thing in left is iffy. will we fill that weak spot (not weak but weakest outside healthy pitching) or do we look for solid relief?
Mark P
8:40
As you noted, the Braves have enough LF options that they might stand pat and invest their trade chips towards pitching.

Then again, Atlanta has quite a history of acquiring random outfielders at the deadline and getting great results.
