With the Yankees footing the bill, no reason for a team in need of outfield help to not take a flier on Hicks

should atlanta go after patrick corbin?
Mark P

The Nats would surely be open to a trade that would see another team take on even a fraction of Corbin's remaining money.

However, while the ERA has been respectable, Corbin's secondary metrics are very rough.  Tons of hard contact, very few strikeouts, etc.

Is Esteury Ruiz going to get better on defense? Defensive WAR has him as a terrible defensive centerfielder and since the A's traded a great defensive centerfielder for peanuts, it'd be nice to know that Ruiz will get better in the outfield as time goes on.
Mark P

It depends on the metric, since OAA has Ruiz as league-average, while Defensive Runs Saved and UZR/150 both hate his glovework.
9:18
So overall, Ruiz isn't exactly a polished product in CF, and a move to the corners might eventually be in his future anyway.  Probably LF due to his so-so arm

Jemier Candelario is playing solidly for the Nats on his one year deal. If he continues with this level of play, what type of package would it take to trade for him at the deadline? Thanks.
Mark P
9:22
It'll be limited as a rental player, so maybe a decent lottery-ticket kind of prospect?  There aren't a ton of contenders with obvious 3B holes (barring injury), apart from maybe Miami since Jean Segura is doing so poorly

Does the Jays lack of depth make it unlikely they’ll be able to upgrade at the deadline?
Mark P
9:23
In theory, picking up utility/bench types shouldn't come at that big of a price tag, so Toronto could be able to swing such a deal to replace Biggio, Espinal, or Lukas.

But if the Jays need to upgrade the bench AND the bullpen AND maybe the rotation, the prices start to add up

The Showalter question raises a different one.  What would Cohen offer the Os for the right to hire Mike Elias? Baty, Alvarez  and the entire Mets 2022 draft class might be a start.

Cohen: Glad to have you aboard, Mike!  Now, what should we do to put a winner on the field?

Elias: Completely tank the next four seasons.

Cohen: rage

I’d love for my Rangers to go after Luis Robert and Joe Kelly. Is it looking more and more likely that CHW are sellers at the deadline? What would it realistically take for that type of package?
Mark P
9:26
I don't see the White Sox moving Robert unless they decide to totally rebuild, but Kelly is a much more feasible target
Depending on how much of Kelly's salary the Rangers agree to eat, the prospect cost might not be that high at all

Why would a team trade for Ohtani, the cost would be prohibitive and he might sign somewhere else.
Mark P
9:27
This is another interesting wrinkle in the Ohtani trade speculation.....the Angels might ask for so much that no team will take the leap, as great as Ohtani is

I know the Cubs weren't really expected to be contenders this year, but do you see them moving on from David Ross at some point this season?
Mark P
9:30
Not sure it's true that the Cubs weren't planning to make a run at the playoffs, so there could indeed be some pressure on Ross.
Unless they completely crater, Ross' job probably isn't really in jeopardy, but he could be on the hot seat if things don't improve in 2024 (the last guaranteed year of his contract)

Thanks for all the questions, it's time to wrap things up for this weekend's chat
