The Yankees might make an outfield move at the deadline but perhaps not a big name, or a true everyday piece unless they unload guys like IKF or Calhoun to clear room

Josh Jung — AL Rookie of the Year?
Mark P
8:42
Yoshida, Brown, or maybe Ruiz seem to have an advantage but Jung is having a very fine year

What are the Braves' best option to upgrade the rotation? Feels like (insert available pitcher here) for Grissom is a fait accompli, but would they just try to patch together with Soroka and other spare parts? Could be a great Burnes destination, but Alex A hasn't shown a high tolerance for rentals in his career
Mark P
8:43
Maybe it's just because I wrote a big post praising Bryce Elder the other day, but Atlanta's pitching situation might not be that dire.  Elder is pitching really well, Shuster has been doing better, and Soroka can hopefully stay healthy and provide some quality innings.

If Fried/Wright are able to come back in July as expected, that's not a huge amount of time for the Braves to try and make do with what they have

Hey Mark, do not forget about me for rookie of the year …….

Bryce Miller too, I knew i was forgetting someone!

Would the Nationals include a outfield prospect in order to deal Patrick Corbin?  They have 3 outfield prospects in the top 50 prospects.  James Wood, Robert Hessel III and Elijah Green.
Mark P
8:45
Moving a top-50 prospect just to unload salary would be a bad move for a rebuilding team.

Hi Mark, as an Ms fan it feels like Lucy just pulled the football away from Charlie Brown again all this excitement from last year and then the offense has been a dud …….. the rotation and bullpen have not been a problem and it is getting late in the season to keep waiting for Hernandez to come around so what bat is out there for the Ms to get that can make a difference this year?
Mark P
8:49
As underwhelming as the M's might have been, they still have a winning record, and some truly excellent starting pitching.

Dipoto, of anyone, will surely be aggressive in pursuing bats at the deadline.  A 1B/DH type seems like a priority, and a second baseman as well unless they really think Caballero can be a regular

Is this trade season the time for Mike Hazen to trade some legit prospect capital to make impact bullpen additions to compete this year or is it a year early
Mark P
8:51
The trouble with moving "legit prospect capital" for bullpen help is that relievers are notoriously fungible.  Unless it's for a controllable relief arm posting elite numbers, the D'Backs probably aren't aiming for such a splashy move in their bullpen pursuits.

I do think Arizona will be aggressive, however. After struggling so badly in the last few years, the Diamondbacks are eager to win.

What effect do you think that getting Royce Lewis will have on the twins team struggling to produce offense?
Mark P
8:52
Low-key one of the more fascinating players to watch this season, since there's so much potential with Lewis, but it's hard to know what to expect since he's played so little.

If he can stay on the field and be even somewhat his minor league numbers, that's a big help for the Twins.

thoughts on the Brewers stance with the deadline a month away? They seem to have gone the cheap route with Winker and Ruf acquisitions compared to last year. Will the be buyers or sell some key pieces like burnes?
Marcus
8:53
How likely is it for the brewers to sell at the deadline? They seem to have gone the cheap route for a few positions this year (Winker, Voit, Ruf) and the bullpen is horrible. Will Burnes get moved?

Will the Brewers part with one of their Aces in a trade with the Yankees?
Mark P
8:54
I feel like I answer this question in the same way every week, but here we go again....it would be downright shocking if Burnes was dealt.  The Brewers are on record about regretting the clubhouse impact of the Hader trade, and moving Burnes when the team is in contention would go over even worse with both the players and the fans.

This doesn't mean that Milwaukee will never trade Burnes, but they're surely not going to do it this summer unless they somehow fall completely out of the race.

If Toronto don't make the playoffs does Ross Atkins lose his job?
Mark P
8:57
Atkins is under contract through 2026, so while the Jays might not want to eat that much money in firing him, missing the playoffs will be an enormous disappointment for the franchise, and changes might be made.

Jays Twitter has already been calling for Click and Mattingly to replace Schneider and Atkins for weeks now, and while that might be a little drastic, it seems likelier that Schneider would go before Atkins does.

Dejong to the dodgers?
Mark P
8:58
LA will want to see a longer sample size before making an offer on DeJong, because he's had a few hot starts in the last couple of years before his production drastically tails off.
9:00
DeJong does seem like he might be dealt regardless of whether or not the Cardinals are in the race or not, since moving DeJong does open up some space on the crowded STL roster.  It remains to be seen if the Cards can move him without eating a good chunk of the $6MM still owed to him.
Dodger Fan 1
9:01
The Dodgers are performing remarkably well considering their SP's have been banged up lately and on any given night they have multiple players hitting at or below the .200 mark. How much longer can smoke and mirrors last with guys like Rojas, Thompson, Heyward, Barnes, Taylor, and Peralta on the roster and at times in the starting lineup? The way I see it, we need an upgrade at SS and LF to go with an upgrade on the bench. Who fits the bill via trade?
Mark P
9:02
Eating salary isn't a big concern for the Dodgers unless it's for a big deal like Taylor's, so any of Thompson/Heyward/Peralta could be released to make roster space for either a call-up or a new acquisition.
9:03
Barnes has been unexpectedly dreadful at the plate, but considering he's a backup catcher, the Dodgers might not be too concerned.  Taylor has started to hit a bit better, and is actually above league-average as per wRC+

Building block or trade chip?
Mark P
9:04
Building block.  It appears Pittsburgh feels the same way since they've been talking extension.

Here at basically the 1/3 point of the season, which 6 teams do you think make the 2023 postseason?
Mark P
9:06
The Rays, Braves, and Dodgers all seem like locks.  Texas and Houston are both pretty close, though given the Rangers' lack of recent track record, I wouldn't be entirely shocked if they ran into some struggles later in the year.
Halo
9:07
I know the angels won’t trade him.. but does a Holiday for Ohtani straight across work?
Mark P
9:07
If the Angels did trade Ohtani, they wouldn't do it for just a single player.  That puts immense pressure on that one player to produce, or stay healthy, etc.
At least if it's for a prospect package, you can spread the risk out over a few guys.
Texas Rangers
9:08
Does Eovaldi get an extension if he continues his dominant year?
Mark P
9:09
If I'm the Rangers, I stand pat with Eovaldi since he's already signed through 2024, and he has a pretty significant injury history.  He's been great so far, no reason to rush to commit further money just yet (especially with so many more millions already invested in the rotation)
Charlie Sheen RP
9:10
Hahahahaha O’s fans aren’t willing to lose Holliday for Ohtani also, considering he wouldn’t make us a championship favorite..
Mark P
9:11
I mean...it's Shohei Ohtani.  Normally moving a top-tier prospect for a rental player isn't likely or logical, but for an Orioles team so loaded in prospects, if the Angels were willing to move this generationally unique player for one single player, Baltimore would surely at least consider it
