Still a Giants fan

Thoughts and opinions on Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey? (Side note for some reason my phone autocorrected a typo in Schmitt and turned his last name into "architecture")
Mark P
9:14
That's definitely the most G-rated possible autocorrect for Schmitt's name.

They've both looked really good in their very small sample sizes, and the Giants are dying for some homegrown young talent to take bigger roles on the team.  They'll both get plenty of playing time and looks even if the Giants are trying to win, since SF's platoon-heavy style allows for lots of guys to get playing time (as long as they keep earning it).

You'd think it Whittaker to the HOF voters that Lou belongs. What gives?
Mark P
9:15
"Lou Whitaker should be in the HOF" is another comment that often comes up in these chats, but I'll happily keep publishing them because Whitaker absolutely deserves a Cooperstown slot

Will Marlins trade Jorge soler?
Mark P
9:18
Not while they're in contention.  Soler can also opt out of his contract ($9MM in 2024) after the season, so he's probably looking like a rental player at the moment, which limits his trade value.
Soler suddenly recapturing his old form is a nice boost for the Marlins, btw.

Do you think wainwright makes the HOF if he gets to 200 wins?
Mark P
9:18
I think he's making it anyway
Arizona

Do we target Bieber/Cease or a Montgomery type in July? Can we offload Carson Kelly this year or not enough time to build his value?
Mark P
9:25
If either Bieber or Cease are actually available, they're the kind of controllable frontline starters that Arizona might be willing to make a splash to obtain.  It's possible they might aim lower for a rental type (i.e. your suggestion of Montgomery) since theoretically Gallen and Kelly already provide so much stability at the top of the rotation.  But man, a really good third starter would not only help the Snakes' chances of making the playoffs, it would make them intriguing in the playoffs.
Carson Kelly basically has no value at this point, considering his struggles and the fact that he might not even be back from the IL until July

Make your statement: which player with less than 3 years of MLB experience makes the Hall in 20 years?!
Mark P
9:26
Man, this is bold!

My pick is Adley Rutschman
Royal trade
9:27
With catching thin throughout the league, if the Royals made Salvy available, what could they get for him?
Mark P
9:29
Midseason trades for catchers are relatively rare, but obviously Perez is a big enough exception that there would be interest, even with so much money left on his contract.

But that said, I highly doubt KC would move a franchise icon

Oakland made the wrong call on Murphy,  Gorman was available.
Mark P
9:32
Donovan/Graceffo/Nootbaar was reportedly what the A's wanted for Murphy, which is itself an interesting what-if for the Cardinals.

It's probably safe to assume that Gorman's name at least came up, given that the Cards and A's probably exchanged tons of names in prospective trade talks.  However, as good as Gorman has looked this year, would he have broken out to this extent (or at all) if he'd been playing within the dismal circumstances of this A's season?
Friar Fatigue
9:34
Probably a dumb question, but is there a minimum age for being called up to the majors? For example, the Padres 16yr old catching prospect... could they call him up right now if they wanted?
Mark P
9:36
I did some googling since I wasn't sure of the answer, but as near as i can tell from my intensive 45-second search, there is no minimum age.  Joe Nuxhall was the youngest player ever at age 15, but that was in 1944 when a lot of big league regulars were in WW2 and rosters were thin
Mark P
9:37
Who has the hotter seat?? David Ross who’s looking like an inexperienced bridge manager or Jed Hoyer who has been in rebuild and has now been apart of 4 big contracts of Heyward, Stroman, Swanson, and Taillon that haven’t shown much promise towards winning. I’m sure Jed’s last shot will be the prospect acquired from the Darvish and big 3 trades
Mark P
9:37
Ross is signed through 2023 and Hoyer through 2025, so Ross would likely be the first one fired if the Cubs do continue disappointing and decided to make changes.
9:38
Hoyer has had some moves backfire to date, but I'm not sure he'd face as much pressure or extra heat
Hamels
9:39
Cole Hamels has basically the same stat line as Wainwright, but people don't seem to view him as a HOFer. (I don't personally feel that Wainwright is either)
Mark P
9:40
Wainwright staying with one team his whole career will carry some extra weight with HOF voters, even if Hamels had the higher peak of the two

Do the Detroit Tigers trade big at the deadline if they’re still in the playoff hunt?
Mark P
9:42
Scott Harris has acted with a lot of caution since taking over the front office, since he's viewing 2023 as something of an evaluation year.  It's possible he might make an upgrade or two if the Tigers are in the race, but a big splashy move doesn't seem overtly likely.

Then again, Harris has been a PBO for less than a year, so we don't know how aggressive he will or won't be in a pennant-race scenario.  Ownership might also be a factor, since after spending so much money in 2022 and falling flat, they might jump at the chance to contend this year and encourage a bigger move

Are we losing more than 120 games this season?
Mark P
9:45
Yep

9:46
at what point do the bucs cut bait and trade Mountain, VV, Santana ( hurt), ..etc...
Mark P
9:47
Velasquez and Santana both being hurt at the moment doesn't help their value, of course, but I don't think the Pirates will necessarily wait until the last minute to sell.

They're not a team that expected to contend in 2023 anyway, so unless they get on track and start winning really quickly, their April performance is easier to view as a bit of an aberration.  Cherington still has his eye on the big picture, and will move veterans at the deadline unless the Bucs are legitmately close to a playoff spot
9:48
It might even resemble the Orioles last year, when the O's still did some selling even while in a pennant race.

We're approaching the two-hour mark, so it's time to wrap the chat. Thanks for all of the questions, and the Weekend Chat will return to the weekend next....weekend.
