Rays bullpen is a concern. Who is a realistic closer the Rays could trade for ?
Mark P
9:54
Chapman and Barlow are the obvious choices since the Royals are one of the few teams out of the running.

But, I'm not sure it's Tampa's style to necessarily acquire a proven closer.  I can see them getting relief pitching (like Robert Stephenson earlier this week) that is either performing well, or maybe a struggling arm that they feel they can get on track
Jake
9:55
Do you think Stephen Strasburg’s career is over after he was shut down from all physical activity?
Mark P
9:55
I'd be surprised to see him pitch again, at this point.  It seems like the injuries are just too much to overcome.
Lou Berberette
9:56
Should the Yankees send Volpe down ?
Mark P
9:57
With Peraza also tearing it up in Triple-A, yeah, it seems like Volpe might need an option to get himself right
Cold man
9:58
Could the Detroit Tigers get anything good for Eduardo Rodrigues or Lorenzen or Turnbull?
Mark P
9:59
No to Turnbull since he's on the IL, and E-Rod's injury still has an unclear timetable.  He might not even be back until mid to late July, giving little time to showcase himself for any trade.
10:00
Lorenzen has quietly pitched very well, and he's only under contract through this season.  If Detroit is out of the race, they'll be inclined to trade Lorenzen anyway, and that desire will be even increased if an E-Rod trade isn't feasible
Joey Bart
10:00
Bart was selected in the pre- Farhan Z. administration and has struggled for several seasons. Should he be traded now that Patrick Bailey has proven himself to be a major league catcher?
Mark P
10:01
I dunno about "proven," since Bailey has a cool 44 plate appearances in the majors.  But if Bailey can keep it up over the rest of the season, he'll definitely take over as the new catcher of the present/future.
DBacks are Deep
10:02
Any strong opinions on the DBacks MiLB depth? Dominic Canzone is looking really good (yet another LHH OF), Buddy Kennedy is putting up a strong line, and Blaze Alexander (before injury) was torching AAA to start the season. They should have enough pieces to deal for a decent upgrade, no?
Mark P
10:04
Arizona is eager enough to get back to the playoffs, so I do think they'll make some upgrades at the deadline in some fashion.  Nothing blockbuster-ish, necessarily, but some rotation depth looks like a must.

Lawlar/Pfaadt/Jones obviously aren't going anywhere, but the D'Backs have built up enough of a farm system that they can move a few notables (like the names you mentioned)
Mario Soto
10:04
Even if the Reds brought up several of their top prospects do you think it would be enough to move the needle considering the state of their pitching?
Mark P
10:06
I don't think the Reds are making these callups with an eye towards winning in 2023, since their eyes are clearly on the future.  But, if they get to the trade deadline, the kids are performing well, and the team is still reasonably close to a wild card or first place....a low-level pitching acquisition or two might be feasible

10:07
Should we trade Soler when his value is at its peak?
Mark P
10:08
Soler Power has carried the Marlins into a wild card berth, no reason to trade him now.
As we've learned, a Miami team just needs to get into the playoffs as the final seed and then it's onto the finals
Bleadin’ Blue n Orange
10:09
What would the Mets have to offer Cincy in a trade for Alexis Diaz?
Mark P
10:10
Multiple top-100 prospects, which is a fair price for a controllable reliever who is already posting elite numbers.

Unless the Mets offered something truly silly, it's not a trade I see the Reds making, since Cincinnati might be thinking they can win as early as 2024 (or, heck, maybe even this year if the NL stays compact)
Angels
10:12
What’s up with trout. He’s been borderline bad this year at the plate
Mark P
10:13
.269/.363/.505 actually does represent a notable dropoff from Trout's usual standards.

But man, in what universe is a 138 wRC+ "borderline bad"?
Brian
10:13
Would the Cardinals trade one or more of their hitters in a Shane Bieber? What framework of deal could work for both teams?
Mark P
10:15
The Guardians would ask for (at least) one MLB-ready player who can help right now, one top prospect who is also in the majors now or is on the verge of debuting, and then a third top prospect who may be a year or two away.

Since Walker and probably Nootbaar aren't going anywhere, it might depend on whether or not the Guardians like any of the Cardinals' outfielders, which is a tough ask since a lot of them are struggling.  Winn is also not necessarily a trade chip since Cleveland has a lot of middle infield prospect depth already.
Your Name
10:16
The Phillies are just plain bad. I know it's not his style, but should Dombrowski retool a bit by trading Nola, Schwarber, Kimbrel, etc. for younger, cheaper guys? They can hit the free agent market again in the offseason and try it again.
Mark P
10:17
It was exactly a year ago that the Phillies made the managerial change and turned their season entirely around.

Obviously that doesn't happen every year, but there's enough talent on this team that nobody would be surprised by, say, a streak of 10 wins in 11 games that gets Philly right back on track
jprcards
10:18
I don't see how Oli Marmol can keep his job. The roster is flawed without question but this team is better than this and they really look like they have almost no confidence at all at this point. Might a new message resonate?
Mark P
10:18
I think I speculated in another chat a couple of weeks ago that Marmol might be fired, but it might be premature to gauge what's going on behind closed doors with the Cards.  One wouldn't have thought that Mike Shildt was going to be fired, and yet....

do the Jays have the bullets to land  Bieber? i don't see an obvious spot in the field where they need an upgrade, the bullpen could use another arm too, a rotation upgrade might do that anyway
Mark P
10:21
As I laid out earlier, Cleveland probably wants a specific type of package to move Bieber (if they move him at all).  St. Louis could feasibly win the bidding since they have a lot of prospect depth....Toronto doesn't.

Halo fans think it's time to trade Ohtani among others. What could they get for Ohtani? Prospects and major league players? What would you do Mark?
Mark P
10:25
If I was put in charge of an Angels team that was floating around .500 near the deadline, and not realistically in the race.....I'd trade Ohtani. As unique of a player as he is, it's also a unique opportunity to get a ton back in return for a rental player, since I doubt Ohtani is re-signing in Anaheim.

Seller’s market
10:27
Wouldn’t it be wise to be like the Orioles last year if you were in a similar position? Seems like there will be a lot of teams close to a playoff position at the end of July. Thinking teams like Giants, Pirates, Marlins, etc.
Mark P
10:28
I can see the Pirates not being too aggressive at the deadline, and the Robert Stephenson trade is perhaps indicative that the Bucs will be semi-sellers (but also semi-buyers).  But for teams like the Marlins and Giants, there's more pressure to return to the playoffs, so I can see them being a bit more bold in their additions

With Barrea’s move. Are the Cardinals calling up Baker or Gomez?
Mark P
10:29
Seems like Baker, given that he wasn't in the Louisville lineup today
Bernie Brewer
10:29
How shocked are you that it’s now June and it’s the Pirates who are seemingly the Brewers biggest threat to the central?
Mark P
10:30
Considering that I picked St. Louis to win the NL pennant, their slow start is a real surprise to me.
