And really, it's been over two months, we're beyond "slow start" at this point
Reds fan

What do they do with Will Myers when he comes off the DL? Seem to play better with him out of the line up
Mark P
10:31
Releasing Myers or trading him a salary dump seems like a lot more realistic way for Cincy to open up a lineup spot than, say, trading Jonathan India
Armchair’ GM
10:32
With the injuries in the Astros rotation, shouldn’t they a top suitor for Lucas Giolito?  Does Korey Lee get them Lucas?
Mark P
10:33
They're not moving Korey Lee for two months of Giolito
DFA
10:34
Does Greike get moved?
Mark P
10:35
Only if he and the Royals mutually agree on a deal
Las Vegas A’s
10:36
Assuming A’s move to LV, and that might be a big if. They play in an AAA park. Wouldn’t it be bad TV optics if they played a playoff game in an AAA park? Would MLB step in to do something in this scenario?
Mark P
10:36
The Vegas ballpark wouldn't be ready until 2027, and if you think the A's are making the playoffs before then, you are an optimistic soul

Love your intro! What’s wrong with Braves Michael Harris II ?
Mark P
10:38
A lot of it is bad luck, since his BABIP is an absurd .213.  Now, he had good BABIP luck last year, so the "true" Michael Harris talent level is probably somewhere in between the 2022 and 2023 versions.

But, between the sophomore slump, the back injury that limited him, and the fact that he had been playing with the knee brace.....a return to 2022 form might take more than just batted-ball luck
Dylan Cease
10:40
What's wrong with me?
Mark P
10:41
Cease's numbers are skewed a bit by a couple of particularly bad starts, but his overall metrics aren't great.  I'm not writing him off or anything since he's still been good enough often enough that this might be just a blip.

Does Chapman's exit from Yankees last season preclude his return this seaon?
Mark P
10:42
That bridge seems burned, yeah

Is AJ Preller’s obsession for the superstar the Padres downfall? In hindsight, would you still trade for Soto, sign Boegey? Or would you just load up on depth, lineup balance, just good players.
Mark P
10:45
If everyone in the starting lineup was hitting like they were supposed to, the lack of depth wouldn't be a huge issue.....and yet it's very rare that a lineup all hits "like they're supposed to," since you always get injuries, people in slumps, people with bad years, etc.

Why doesn't John Fisher just sell? The revenue sharing money plus whatever profits come from owning a MLB franchise would be dwarfed by one-time cash infusion from selling the team. They've gone from the Howard Terminal project, where he would have owned the stadium and had the whole ballpark experience to generate more money. Now, they're holding out hope to build a publicly owned stadium on a plot of land too small for the stadium and retractable roof with a smaller media market than the Bay Area. Why not just take a couple of billion and sell the team?
Mark P
10:50
It's a fair question, and only Fisher knows the answer.  He's certainly gotten offers for the team over the years, and he could cash out for $2 billion at basically any time.

Say what you will about Arte Moreno's series of interviews in the preseason, but I believe him when he said that he ultimately changed his mind about selling the Angels because he just genuinely gets a kick out of owning a Major League Baseball team.  Based on his public actions and his seeming determination to drive the Oakland baseball experience into the ground before leaving town, it doesn't seem like Fisher cares a whit about the team apart from a purely business transaction

is a Nolan Gorman and Ivan herera for Justin steele baseline for a trade reasonable. Cubs get a position infield bump and cards get their 2-3 pitcher.  Makes it even more so as Steele is injured, and it doesn’t effect the cards much as long term pitching is what they need. Infra division trade is hard, but looks like a win win to me
Mark P
10:52
Well, the Cubs and Cardinals have made about two trades with each other in the last 40 years.  So that's just one issue with this implausible trade scenario.

10:53
So what can the mariners get for teo at the trade deadline?
Mark P
10:55
Hernandez generally is a slow starter, but he usually shakes off that slow start earlier than June 3.

I'm not convinced the Mariners will be sellers just yet, because they've invested a lot into being contenders in 2023.  But if they did pivot to selling in order to reload for next year, moving Hernandez seems logical....but it'll be selling low unless he gets rolling at the plate

Can the Marlins keep it up? They are doing well so far. Or is the rest of the NL east underachieving?
Mark P
10:57
It certainly helps that the Phillies and Mets are underwhelming, but I think Miami can stay in the hunt.  Arraez, Soler, Sanchez, and De La Cruz have all been hitting well, giving the Marlins some of the offense they desperately, desperately needed

Do you see a path where the Rangers trade Garver and Duran off for legitimate bullpen upgrades? Care to speculate on scenarios? Appreciate all you guys do.
Mark P
10:59
I wouldn't trade either, especially not Duran.  Unless Texas got, say, Alexis Diaz or someone controllable back in return, Duran is too valuable to move for a reliever.

Acuna for NLMVP?
Mark P
11:02
Taking a glance at the fWAR leaderboard, and would it surprise to learn that Acuna isn't even Atlanta's team leader?  Acuna has 2.6, Sean Murphy has 2.8

Not that fWAR is the be-all and end-all of MVP discussions, but Betts is leading baseball with a 2.9 score at the moment.  If you consider narrative as an element of MVP voting, Betts moving back to the middle infield to help out the Dodgers could be seen as an extra factor for voters who are weighing "most valuable."

Cincinnati dealing Newman, Myers, maybe Weaver and Senzel at deadline, then brjng Eddy, CES, Abbott up?
Mark P
11:03
I think at least a couple of those guys will be called up well before the deadline, and a couple of the veterans could be dealt or released well before the deadline

Texas needs BP help when they come out of this euphoria.

Can Zendaya pitch?
Mark P
11:06
What do you think is more likely to happen. Marcus Stroman traded or extended?
Mark P
11:07
A trade, just because in-season extensions are pretty rare.
11:08
I guess your scenario doesn't preclude Stroman not being dealt, and then working out an extension before the FA period opens, but if I gets to that point, I think he'll want to test the market
Phandom
11:08
who's your #3 wildcard? san diego, san francisco, or philadelphia?
Mark P
11:09
Is it out of the question to suggest none of the above?  Like, say the Diamondbacks, Mets and Marlins are the wild cards?
Nick C
11:10
Do the Nationals try and move Jeimer Candelario at the deadline or is he a candidate to be extended?
Mark P
11:11
It'd be very surprising to see the Nats extend him.  This seems like the exact scenario the Nats were hoping would happen when they inked Candelario to the one-year contract.....he has a very nice bounce-back year, so D.C. can max out on its possible return for him at the deadline
