What is the outcome come October for Mets and Padres. Both makes playoffs, one makes the playoffs, or both misses out on the playoffs? This is assuming both being buyers in the deadline.

Vladdy is yet to hit a home run at Roger’s Centre this season. What gives?
Mark P
9:10
The Jays as a team have hit only 29 homers at the RC this season.  Could be the lineup's general inconsistency, or it could be that the fence changes have had an untoward effect on power numbers.
9:11
In Guerrero's specific case, however, he's in a bit of a funk right now overall at the plate.  A lot of hard contact still, but he's not getting the ball in the air often enough, and it seems like he's trying to force things with too many big swings

Detroit is so bad and have had so many injuries. Please tell me something positive to make me keep paying attention this summer.

Only 5.5 games out of first place?

I won't lie, I was wondering if the Tigers could be a darkhorse team to watch a couple of weeks ago, but losing E-Rod and Greene was a real double gut-punch
Comerica is a great place to watch a ball game?

Cutch!  I've been watching the Pirates since '89.  He's number 2 on my list of best Bucs I saw...1.  Bonds 2.  Cutch   3.  Giles  4.  AVS  5.  Drabek.  How borderline HoF is Andrew McCutchen?
Mark P
9:14
He's not going to make it, since his true prime was relatively short.

But still, no shame whatsoever in being a borderline HOFer. McCutchen has had a fantastic career, and it's great that he's getting another run in front of the Pittsburgh fans.

Could Angels be sellers and buyers at deadline?
Mark P
9:16
If the Angels are close like they are now (1.5 games out of the wild card), they'll be buying.  They desperately want to break the playoff drought, especially with Ohtani still around.

Mikolas,Flaherty,Montgomery  all trade bait .....Will Cards make a real move or will the FO just make a minor  tweak because they don't  admit Cards are possibly done for this season.
Mark P
9:17
Barring a total collapse, the Cardinals aren't going to be dealing any of these guys until very close to the deadline, since they'll want as much information as they can about the trade market and their status in the NL Central before deciding whether to sell in any way.

I am willing to offer Owen White, Luisangel Acuña, Justin Foscue, Mitch Bratt, and Yeison Morrobel for Dylan Cease and Joe Kelly? Is that a fair deal?
Mark P
9:20
This would get Chicago's attention if they did decide to move Cease, but I feel like another team would top it
Jeremy Pena

Meeting expectation exceeding expectations or not meeting 2023 expectations
Mark P
9:23
His offensive numbers are almost identical to last year, and the defense is probably roughly the same (since the varying metrics that disagreed on his glovework in 2022 are kind of in reverse disagreement on him in 2023).

Probably the Astros would've liked to have seen Pena take a bit more of a step forward, but he's far from an actual problem

Assuming the Cubs do trade Stroman and Smyly, what's their long-term plan? Get good players and trade them for mediocre prospects? At some point they need to contend again and I don't see how trading their good players makes them better in the near future.
Mark P
9:26
The opt-outs and club options involved in these contracts made it seem like the Cubs at least anticipated this possible scenario, or gave them the flexibility to pivot if the team wasn't yet ready to contend.

That said, obviously the Cubs thought they'd be a lot better than this in 2023, and it's surely a letdown to the front office that they're again looking like deadline sellers.  But, moving pitchers brought in on specific short-term deals isn't necessarily a sign that all is lost in Wrigleyville
For instance, the Cubs are probably targeting players that can be MLB-ready for 2024, or even now
Ace of Braves
9:27
Is their a struggling pitcher on a large contract the Braves could take a chance trading for to shore up the rotation. Cost would be less prospect wise taking on a larger salary.
Mark P
9:28
If you're going to take a flier on a player, why not try to rejuvenate a "struggling" pitcher who comes at a much lower price tag?
RG
9:28
could the reds trade one of their young bats for a young pitching prospect?
Mark P
9:31
This might be something Cincinnati explores during the offseason, when they've had a bit more time to evaluate their infielders (at both the MLB and minor league levels) and gauge who they really see as cornerstones.

I forget who wrote the article, but there was a piece we linked to a few months ago arguing that the Reds might almost "have to" deal one of their infielders over to the rather absurd surplus.  Naturally, not all of these players will end up being good big leaguers and some could change positions, but Cincy is in a bit of a unique situation to possibly swing a rare prospect-for-prospect deal
And no, this doesn't mean they're moving De La Cruz.

As the one who first asked, "Bees?" I have to say I love how it's grown.  A random, drunk joke, which you 1) Understood, and 2) Responded to, has become a highlight of my Sundays.

With angels 1.5 games back of wild card can they trade for 2 of giolito, bieber, snell, stroman ? We need 2 sp to compliment ohtani, reid determers, sandoval and suarez are not the answer.
Mark P
9:33
The Angels may not have the minor league depth to outbid other teams for one of those pitchers, let alone two of those pitchers.
9:34
Also, as much as they obviously want to get back into the postseason, cleaning out the farm for a one-year shot might not be a wise move with Ohtani quite possibly leaving in the winter
The Goat
9:34
When will Aaron Judge return?
Mark P
9:35
One of the biggest questions in baseball right now.  It doesn't seem like it'll be "all" that long, since Judge isn't in a walking boot.
But still, losing Judge for even two weeks is bad news for the Yankees.
Brew Crew

If we trade Burnes, what’s the best prospect you could see us getting to headline a return deal?
Mark P
9:37
A top 40-50 type of prospect.
Dbacks
9:38
Hazen mentioned wanting to add a big bat. Any players you could see us targeting without very many big holes to fill?
Mark P
9:40
Third base is ostensibly a weak spot, unless the D'Backs just give more playing time to Rivera (who is quietly hitting very well) over Rojas, rather than keep to a platoon.  Picking up some outfield/DH depth might work as well, adding one more bat to go alongside Carroll and Gurriel
