I see a lot of Cardinal's fans wanting to give up a LOT for Bieber. Imo, those days are gone. He's still effective, but his numbers are ALL going the wrong direction. What's a realistic package from St Louis for him. I'm not opposed to trading top prospects, but for him They're not getting any of the top 6 from me either. If that's the ask, I'm looking elsewhere. Or am I looking at advanced stats wrong?

This was the thesis of a recent MLBTR Front Office subscriber piece, and my apologies to whichever of my co-workers wrote the piece since I'm forgetting the author at the moment!

The true top-of-the-rotation ace Shane Bieber might not be around anymore.  Not that he isn't still a solid pitcher, but he isn't a shutdown guy.  Other teams (including the Cards) obviously know this and are adjusting their offers accordingly, whereas the Guardians naturally still want to get as much of a return as possible

After this weekend, the White Sox have to pull the plug, right? The Dodgers seem like a good fit for a trade, they need both infield help and a starter. Giolito and Andrerson for Busch and Grove...who says no?
Mark P
8:26
Giolito definitely seems like a good fit for LA, but Anderson is in such a dire slump that I'm not sure the Dodgers necessarily have him on the radar (or see him as a big upgrade).

Joe Kelly seems like a good bet to be moved agreed?
Mark P
8:29
His metrics are a lot better than his ERA, so yeah, he'll get some attention.  Could depend on how much of his salary the White Sox are willing to eat, since I don't think a team is absorbing all of his remaining money
Rays Pitching
8:29
Any update on Raz? Also with mcclanahan down and Bradley struggling do you think the rays add a starter and if so who?
Mark P
8:31
I'm assuming you mean Baz, and no real updates as of late beyond standard rehab progress.  There's essentially no chance he'll pitch in 2023, if that's what you're implying --- he had his TJ surgery so late into September that in the absolutely best case scenario, he'd be a bullpen arm for the playoffs.  Doesn't feel like the Rays would take that risk
8:32
In terms of adding a starter, however, Rasmussen and Fleming are coming back in August, so some pitching depth is potentially on the way if health prevails.  Trading for more rotation help would be a creative answer, and it can't be ruled out for a Rays team that is clearly aiming to win it all

Do you think the Jays would trade Varsho? Do you think they regret the trade in the first place? Thanks!
Mark P
8:35
The Jays need a lot more from Varsho in the second half, and his being a pretty ordinary player has been one of the major reasons why the team has underachieved.  A trade doesn't seem feasible since the Jays would be selling low, and not really able to recoup anything in the realm of a Moreno/Gurriel package.
8:36
In terms of regrets, three months is too soon to pass judgement on this deal.  But for now, it's looking like a pretty big miss on the Blue Jays' part, frankly.

Even though the offense looked better on this road trip, another bat would be welcome.  Best fits on the trade market?  Or just give Keston Hiura another chance?
Mark P
8:38
Frelick should be called up at some point, so that's some help from within.  But if I'm Milwaukee, I'm definitely on the phone with Washington about Candelario and perhaps Lane Thomas

Max Scherzer for Jordan Lawler who says no?
Mark P
8:40
Arizona.  They aren't moving a top 5-10 prospect for what might be two months of Scherzer.
Cactus Jack

Seattle buyers or sellers at deadline?
Mark P
8:42
I feel like this is a stock answer for several on-the-fence teams, but if the M's don't get hot in the next couple of weeks, I can also see him buying and selling.  Seattle is another team that wants to win immediately, so they're not going to go wild and have a major selloff.  They'll try to reload for 2024, but still be open to moving some players who aren't necessarily in their long-term plans.

For instance, if the M's can't get on track, Teoscar suddenly become a very big trade chip

Orelvis Martinez going to get us something big down the stretch?
Mark P
8:45
I'm personally not super high on Orelvis as a prospect, so if the Jays can get something good for him now, I'd be on board.

Toronto has already traded enough from its farm system that the cupboard is pretty bare, but Orelvis might hit the sweet spot of being just prominent enough to move, but still clearly a tier below the Tiedemann/Barriera group.

Ryan McMahon a trade piece? He can play multiple positions and could fit it about any lineup
Mark P
8:46
Colorado has him signed through 2027, so I doubt McMahon is going anywhere.  It's possible that another poor season has finally convinced the Rox that they need to really blow things up and properly rebuild, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Is Heim (c) Tex a real stud for future years?  Seems like an unexpectantly huge breakout.
Mark P
8:48
The advanced metrics are relatively bullish on Heim, so his breakout isn't really a fluke.  If I'm the Rangers, I'm certainly pretty comfortable that he can be at least a solid catcher for years to come.

are the giants sellers or buyers at the deadline ?
Mark P
8:50
Buyers.  They're in a wild card position now, and the Giants have had one of the best records of any team in baseball in the last two months.  My guess is they definitely see a route to a playoff spot.  They could also be sneaky candidates for a headline-grabbing move, considering their attempts at Judge and Correa last year

Why no love for Steer for possible ROY?
Mark P
8:52
Steer is having an excellent season but Corbin Carroll has that award basically on lockdown
Even on the Reds alone, De La Cruz and McLain will siphon votes away from Steer
Joey Bart
8:53
Clear in done in Frisco. Where is my next gig?
Mark P
8:54
Speaking of the Giants making deadline trades, Bart would seem like a prime trade chip.  His top prospect days aren't so long ago that an interested team wouldn't think he can't blossom with a change of scenery.

Bart wouldn't be the headline piece of a big trade, but as part of a package deal, sure
Varsho
8:54
He’s at 1.0 WAR. Gurriel + Moreno are at 1.6.
and Arizona won’t have Gurriel
Mark P
8:55
It's more about the opportunity cost.  Trading Moreno (one of the top prospects in baseball) was supposed to be the big all-in move that would get immediate help for a World Series push.  Instead, the Jays now have even more question marks in both Varsho, and even at catcher since neither Jansen or Kirk has been all that great.
Nats All-Stars
8:56
Josiah Gray but no Thomas or Candelario (even with a thin 3B field). Thoughts?
Mark P
8:57
Maybe it's just me, but I've never been personally all that fired up over All-Star "snubs."  There's no perfect way to fill out an ASG roster, since some people are inevitable going to be left out.

Also, with more than a week until the game, Candelarios or Thomas might end up both getting in due to other injuries.
Angels 1961
8:57
If 5 or 6 games out by deadline, do they trade Ohtani. Do they keep Ohtani and see him hit 60 HR.
Mark P
8:58
Barring something like a complete collapse in the next three weeks, the Angels aren't trading Ohtani

Could you make the argument that Texas needs to trade for two top of the rotation arms (i.e. Cease and Snell)?
