(Obligatory "you can never have enough pitching" mention)

Rotation wouldn't be at the top of the Rangers' wishlist necessarily, but getting one starter seems like a distinct possibility moreso than two.  As to whether or not it'd be an ace, well, the Rangers have been so aggressive in building this team that all bets are off in gauging how they'll push at the deadline now that the team is actually contending
JP
9:01
Do the Tigers look at trading Lorenzen at the deadline?
Mark P
9:01
The Tigers still have a shot at the division title, so they might not decide to sell until the very last minute.  But if they do sell, Lorenzen is naturally someone likely to go
Andrew M
9:02
Are the Reds in need of back end rotation piece or more of a bullpen arm in front of Diaz? I’m struggling to see where the rotation is at with Lodolo and Greene on the IL, but the offense has held its own. With a wide open Central, what do you think?
Mark P
9:02
I'd say rotation is clearly the bigger need

9:03
How are the Padres this unlucky?!  They have a positive run differential!  Under what scenario can you see them being sellers at the deadline?
Mark P
9:04
If they have a .452 winning percentage and are 11.5 games out of first place (their current status) at the deadline, they absolutely should sell.  Once again, the Padres will be a buy-and-sell team since they want to reload for 2024, but that still leads to a lot of intriguing possibilities.  A Soto trade really can't be ruled out, for instance

Should I go to the movies tonight?  What should I see?  Guardians, Flash, Indy?
Mark P
9:05
Guardians (of the Galaxy, not the Cleveland team) is the only one of the three movies that I've seen, and it was awesome.
Angel
9:05
any moves for the angels?
Mark P
9:06
They'll definitely keep buying, since they're clearly all-in on this season.  Pitching seems like a natural target, and maybe more infield reinforcement depending on Drury's status (though his injury doesn't seem that serious)
Ethan
9:07
Would the Indians trade Emmanuel Clase back to Texas for Evan Carter ?
Mark P
9:09
Clase is under a long-term contract, so that makes this a little tricky for the Guardians.  But moving a reliever (even a star reliever) for such a top-tier position player prospect seems like it would be too good for Cleveland to pass up
9:10
But from the Rangers' perspective, they're absolutely not moving Carter for a reliever.  If they actually did move Carter, it would be for a star position player or starter

9:10
Could the Tigers actually be Buyers at the deadline ?
Mark P
9:11
Adding to my note earlier about the Tigers still being in contention.....absolutely.  They wouldn't go overboard with splashy moves, but a lower-level trade to help bolster the team for a division title run?  Sure.
Pete Alonso
9:12
Do you think he’s still a little banged up with the wrist injury? He doesn’t look right
Mark P
9:14
I'm always a little wary when a player returns well ahead of schedule from an injury, and Alonso has absolutely not hit well since coming off the IL.  Maybe he needs the HR Derby to re-activate his bat
Joshy
9:15
How does Witt turn it around? Not looking so good thus far.
Mark P
9:17
With the caveat that Witt is still only 23, there's plenty of time for him to get on track.  And really, there's already a lot to like so far....as per Statcast, he's actually one of the unluckiest players in baseball, since his hit metrics indicate he should be producing a lot more at the plate.

That said, Witt definitely needs to walk more often, and the shortstop defense has been okay but nothing spectacular
AZ
9:18
They obviously aren’t going to make a big splash because of prospect capital, but who is a “cheap” starter to replace Davies and what would he cost?
Mark P
9:21
I generally agree with your take, but here's my devil's advocate case for why the D'Backs might be a team inclined to make a bigger splashy move for pitching.

1) they have a lot of prospect depth
2) their pitching need is particularly great, since losing Kelly to the IL makes Gallen basically their only reliable starter
3) gaining a controllable pitcher (or two??) in return would help offset the loss of a controllable prospect

Now, to be clear, I don't think Lawlar or Druw Jones or Pfaadt are going anywhere. But from the tier below those blue chippers, Arizona could be more open to shifting prospects for a win-now piece
Curt
9:23
Why are the Cubs saying they aren’t interested in extending Stroman? It seems odd to me that they’re openly saying it, regardless if the right call or not.
Mark P
9:23
The Cubs haven't publicly said anything about the situation, it's all been from Stroman
R
9:24
What teams would be interested in jordan Montgomery? And is his price increasing since he’s been pitching so well lately?
Mark P
9:25
Basically any contender in need of rotation help could have a need for Montgomery, which gives the Cardinals a lot of options in gauging offers.  It's possible STL hasn't given up hope on re-signing Montgomery themselves, but if they're not getting a feeling that he'll stay, and another team offers something beyond the value of a qualifying offer compensation pick, the Cardinals should absolutely make that move
Yanks
9:27
Can the yankees find a take for Donaldson and stanton
Mark P
9:28
Not without significant prospects added in either case, and even then, Stanton is probably a no-go due to his salary and injury concerns (and the added wrinkle of his no-trade clause)
If you're another team interested in Donaldson, why make any kind of real offer when the Yankees might be close to eventually just DFA'ing him?

9:29
Would Mo trade Montgomery or Flaherty to the Reds? Or is trading to a divisional team out of the question.
Mark P
9:30
If the offer is right, Mozeliak would probably be open to it. Both are rental players, so it's not like they'd necessarily stick around in Cincy to haunt the Cardinals for years
Guest
9:31
Since obviously nothing is physically wrong with Noah song other than the fact he hasn't pitched in three years, how much longer can the Phillies stash him on the IL?
Mark P
9:32
He just started his rehab assignment, so that means a 30-day window before the Phillies have to call him up to the big leagues or offer him back to Boston.
Felix
9:32
Should Dodgers trade Julio Urías  so they can get something before he becomes a free  agent
Mark P
9:32
No way is a Urias trade happening
John
9:34
Orioles open to moving Kjerstad?
Mark P
9:34
Maybe, but not unless they get a very big return
9:35
I've made this point before, but teams who have a lot of premium prospects can still find trades hard because other teams try to leverage this surplus.

It's like "come on, you've got plenty of other good prospects, you can surely move Kjerstad for this middle reliever!" while Mike Elias holds the phone away from his ear and openly rolls his eyes
Ty
9:37
is there any way you could see a Zack Wheeler trade that nets the Phillies an MLB ready?  Orioles seem like a great match.
Mark P
9:37
Uh, the Phillies have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last month.  They're definitely not trading Wheeler.
