I feel that the relief layer of Braves is a little thin, but is there any possibility of reinforcing it?
Mark P
9:29
Oops, meant to post that before the previous answer

Joey bart for Jordan Montgomery?
Mark P
9:30
The Cardinals don't need more catching depth
9:33
Had to pause there a few moments to post the news.....the Reds are calling up Christian Encarnacion-Strand
Shoutout to a few readers in this chat who noted that CES wasn't in the Triple-A lineup tonight, and speculated about a call-up or even a trade

Do.you think John Lennon could've played Mlb?
Mark P
9:33
And take the paycut??

Brewers had a great series, but now Tellez out for an extended time, so they need a first baseman Pronto. Is Cron the obvious choice? What do.you think it would take?
Mark P
9:35
Probably not all that much, considering that Cron is a pending free agent.  It's a little tricky to fully predict a return since the Rockies tend to evaluate players differently than most teams, but on paper, Cron seems like one of the more productive players that could be had for a pretty reasonable price tag
Jeff
9:37
Maybe the Brewers could welcome back Vogelbach? Give the Mets a middle tier prospect or reliever?
Mark P
9:37
I'll bet Milwaukee thinks it can do better for 1B/DH upgrades than Vogelbach
Jeff

If the Jays are serious about acquiring Stroman, what do you think the cost would be?
Mark P
9:40
Since the Cubs want to contend next year, they'd want a big-league ready younger player or two....except the Blue Jays don't really have any of those who aren't already in the big leagues.

This is one of several reasons why I don't see Stroman as a great fit for Toronto.  The Jays could certainly use a more solidified rotation, but on paper (on the thinnest of stock!) they'll have six starters when Ryu gets back.  The rotation isn't as big of a need in my view as another bat

If the Angels do trade Ohtani...or even if they don't...do you think they'll clean out the cupboard and move people like Renfroe, Drury, Moustakas?  And do you think they'd move Carlos Estevez?  (Anybody else you think was someone teams might have interest in?)  And thanks for spending your Sunday night with us, Mark.
Mark P
9:42
Moving other shorter-term veterans definitely seems likely, you're right.  Dealing Estevez would seem tempting and the Angels might be selling high, but he's also been such a great signing that I can understand why LAA would want to retain him.
9:43
The other factor in an Ohtani trade is this...what are the Angels looking to do in 2024?  Even if Ohtani isn't there, it's hard to see Moreno green-lighting a full rebuild or something, that doesn't seem to be in his nature.
Jay
9:48
Are teams willing to go to a 6 man rotation and have a permanent DH if they trade for Ohtani? The idea of having him is sexy but there are logistical issues that he brings.
Mark P
9:49
Teams wouldn't hesitate for a moment.
Play the numbers and win now!
9:49
I feel strongly that GMs value their “top prospects” waaaaay too much.  Am I crazy to think that if a team has a reasonable budget, they should bargain the majority of their top prospects for established assets?
Mark P
9:50
It is true that a lot of prospects (even seeming blue-chippers) end up not amounting to much at the MLB level.  But to keep continually trading away homegrown assets is a mistake, since it demands that you have a high return on the established veterans that you're getting back
Eddie
9:52
Will Endy Rodriguez play catcher for the Pirates?
Mark P
9:52
That seems like the idea, with Davis remaining mostly in the outfield
Phanatic
9:52
pure speculation I know but I have recently seen an article about Phills being interested in Juan Soto as he’s got relationships with former teammates Harper and Turner as well as his former Nats hitting coach. Any reality to this “rumor”?
Mark P
9:54
Given Dombrowski's penchant for big swings, he might very well have made a call about Soto.  It's hard to gauge exactly what San Diego will do at this point, and while I can't rule out a Soto deal, it seems less likely to me than moving Snell and/or Hader
Billy
9:54
What could cubs get from Orioles for Bellinger and Stroman if they also ate some or all of the $ owed?
Mark P
9:55
I made this note in the Astros/Jays post, but the Cubs aren't really in payroll-cutting mode any more.  If they're moving quality assets, they want at least one player back in either deal that might be able to help them win in 2024.
In Baltimore's case, the Orioles have so many good prospects that the Cubs are more likely to offer to eat the salaries in order to get more talent in return
Example
9:56
BAL and CIN, HOU beforehand, are great examples of teams that built up prospect talent over years of playing poorly and had the turnaround because the young guys panned out. Who’s an example of a team that we thought built up talent but it never came to fruition?
Mark P
9:56
The 2023 Royals sadly raise their hands
10:04
Another break in the chat to update the CES post.  One of my top MLBTR pet peeves is when I start a chat, and then a notable news item breaks shortly thereafter.  Being forced to do my actual job?!  The indignity!

Giolito is playing for who after deadline?
Mark P
10:05
This feels like a Dodgers pickup to me
RP’s
10:05
Why don’t more teams sell high on great individual seasons? (ie Schreiber last year) very few elite RP’s year after year
Mark P
10:06
Because other teams also know that there are very few elite RPs year after year, so they aren't included to pay a big trade return for a possible one-year wonder
Arte
10:06
Is it mere spite that is making me not trade Shohei?
Mark P
10:07
The Angels aren't out of the race yet, as dire as things seem.  If they get on a little hot streak before the deadline, that might be all the incentive that Moreno needs to totally kibosh any talk of an Ohtani trade
Rays Pitching
10:10
I still think we need a starter or two now that Rasmussen is out for the year. Who's a few targets knowing the rays don't like bidding wars?
Mark P
10:11
Someone like a Rich Hill or a Paul Blackburn fits the model of a somewhat under-the-radar Rays pickup, but perhaps I'm wrong in assuming that the team is going to keep things somewhat modest at the deadline.  It seems like there's extra urgency this year, and with the Orioles now closing in on first place, the Rays might feel the need to make a bigger splash (or get involved in a bidding war for someone like Giolito)

Kinda feels like SD has to make some significant change(s) this offseason,no? Current mix isn’t working and AJ will *have* to be involved with Ohtani and/or trying to extend Soto.
