Astros GM Dana Brown
9:00
I need a bat and a starter for the rotation with all of our injuries? Who makes the most sense?
Mark P
9:02
Lorenzen, Stroman, and Bellinger have all been linked to Houston in rumors, and they want a left-handed bat in general.  Someone like Seth Brown or Corey Dickerson could be an interesting acquisition if Bellinger doesn't work out,
9:04
As for pitchers, it'll be interesting to see how Brown operates in his first deadline as a GM, but since the Astros' rotation needs seem pretty severe, I wonder if he'll take the plunge in aiming for a front-of-the-rotation type.  It would take a higher prospect cost, but keep in mind, most of the top prospects in the system weren't drafted by Brown --- executives tend to be more open to moving players they didn't personally land

Seattle trades Harry Ford, Bryan Woo and another top 5 type in seattle organization for Ohtani
Mark P
9:05
It'd take a lot more than that to a) land Ohtani, and b) convince the Angels to move Ohtani within the division

Instead of making a big trade, we should just call up Chourio
Mark P
9:07
Chourio has yet to play any Triple-A ball, so that seems like a bit of an unnecessarily aggressive move.  Even calling up Frelick was a bit surprising since he wasn't ripping it up at Triple-A, but promoting Chourio straight to the majors is probably a bridge too far

Jon Heyman suggested the Phillies might land Juan Soto in 2025. Given the amount of money they’re paying Harper and Turner, coupled with needing to either re-sign or replace Nola and Wheeler, does this strike you as likely?
Mark P
9:09
With $146MM already on the books for 2025, I"d say Soto in Philly is on the unlikely side.  That said, I can never rule Dave Dombrowski out from any big move, the Phillies have shown they're open to big spending, and it's possible they might make another trade to move some money (Castellanos? Schwarber?) off the books in the interim, if that's an issue

Why don’t more teams bring back rental players they trade away? Seems like Giolito wants to stay long term, go chase a ring for a few months and then come back. Helps him, helps the farm, win-win?
Mark P
9:11
Some players just want to move on, or they get a chip on their shoulder about a team that dealt them away.

Will the O’s play at the top end of the RP market?  Seems like their bullpen is a Bautista injury from imploding
Mark P
9:12
A splashy move for a top reliever doesn't seem to fit with Elias' relatively conservative style, though then again, it's possible he could change course in a true go-for-it kind of year.

That said, an exec doesn't need a top reliever to improve a bullpen, as evidenced by Bautista and Cano themselves

What will it take for the Reds to land Michael Lorenzen? Does an org prospect in the range of 6-10 and another in the 20-30 range seal the deal? How about Sal Stewart and Jose Torres?
Mark P
9:17
That's a pretty decent return for a rental player, so that at least gets Detroit's attention.  I do suspect that the pitching market might be intense enough that another team could top it, or the Reds would have to cough up more

It was nice seeing the Crime Dog and Scott Rolen inductions today.  Who do you think we see next year?  Todd Helton?  Adrian Beltre?
Mark P
9:18
Beltre is definitely getting in first ballot, and Helton and Wagner were both close enough to induction last year and they'll get over the line this winter.  Possibly the same for Andruw Jones, or he might have to wait until 2025.
Mauer and Utley get a good dose of support in their first year on the ballot, as well

Cincy is one of my favorite stories of the season.   If you were the GM of the Reds, what move would you make that makes them better for 2023, but doesn’t really affect the future Reds teams?
Mark P
9:22
Returning to Cincinnati's minor league system, their infield depth is so ridiculous that they can move someone like a Sal Stewart and basically not even blink.  In theory, a team with a controllable asset beyond 2023 might seek out Marte, Arroyo, or Collier, and even losing one of those higher-tier prospects might not be a big hit to a Reds team already swimming in big-league ready infielders.
9:23
A Civale or a Paul Blackburn may not be the most enthralling (en-Kralling?) names for Reds fans hoping for a real ace for the rotation, but they're both controllable

Cards could move DeJong, Flaherty, Hicks, Montgomery and several AAA guys that are blocked to land pitching for next year. Do you see Mo being that aggressive or are we probably looking at the offseason?
John Mozeliak
9:24
True or false - I should trade Flahtery, Montgomery, O'Neil, Gallegos, hicks/helsley
Deadbirds
9:24
A lot has been written about Cardinals being sellers but nobody has mentioned what prospects might go back their way. Thoughts?
Mark P
9:27
Mozeliak has traditionally been a pretty modest buyer at the deadline, so it would stand to reason that he might be somewhat the same in this unfamiliar role as a seller.  All of the rental players seem likelier to go than O'Neill, Gallegos or Helsley, but I could see some kind of larger deal involving a rental paired with a longer-term controllable asset for a bigger return
In terms of what "prospects" St. Louis might target, a larger deal would net a broader package ---- a player or two who can help the Cardinals immediately, and maybe a longer-term prospect

9:28
Nick Senzel seems like guy who Cincinnati might trade.  What could they expect in return?
Mark P
9:29
Senzel is controlled through 2025, which is kinda surprising since he's seemingly been around forever, but maybe not a shock considering that he's lost so much time to the injured list.  Despite his former top-prospect sheen, it's hard to see the Reds getting much in return.  Maybe just a flier of a prospect, or Senzel is a throw-in as part of a larger deal, etc.

Is Shohei the greatest player of all-time?
Mark P
9:31
No, but it's gotten to the point where we have to ask how many more seasons of elite two-way play do we need to see from Ohtani before we can legitimately put him in the GOAT discussion.  The fact that we're already in his fourth such season of such two-way excellence is pretty wild.

Do you see the Jays making any kind of big addition? They don't have a *glaring* weakness at most positions, but it just feels like they need a bit more hitting
Mark P
9:33
The Blue Jays are in the tough/frustrating spot of technically being set at every position, except it also very much feels like every starter should be better than they are.  I'd point to 2B and LF as areas for an upgrade, since the Jays can turn Varsho and Merrifield into either bench players or part of a LF platoon, and then bump some of the Biggio/Espinal/Luplow/etc. bench mix off the roster entirely.
9:34
As to what they can give up, they've expended a lot of prospect capital already in trades, so it's hard to see them moving any of their top-100 types for a real big-ticket deal.  Then again, since they're already in win-now mode and missing the playoffs would be an abject disaster, the front office might feel more pressure to take another bold swing at a trade
Chats
9:35
Why are there fewer chats now than there were a few weeks ago?
Mark P
9:36
We're all a bit busier at this time of year with trade speculation and draft signings, as well as the usual constant rush of daily transactions.  There isn't quite as much time to devote an hour-plus of time to a chat, hence why we've missed a few here and there

9:37
True or False - Curtis Mead is playing for someone in MLB post-deadline?
Mark P
9:38
My vote is false, since I think there's a bigger chance Mead is make his MLB debut in a Tampa uniform at some point in August.  Though I did note earlier that the Rays might be more aggressive than normal, that could manifest itself in moving some higher-rated guys who might be a bit further away from the majors
Matt

Do you think the Guardians could be sellers at the deadline. If so, do they have anything that could bring back a decent return?
