They won't be full-fledged sellers, since they're still hanging in there for the division and wild card races.  If anything, the Guardians will probably buy and sell in equal measure.  Moving Civale or someone, but perhaps also looking to land a bat

I feel like Nats should package Lane and Candy.. should be a way to mangle one premium young asset..
Mark P
9:41
Dangling Thomas (who is controlled through 2025) should alone be enough to get a very interesting return, and a well-ranked prospect.
9:42
Ergo, Washington is more likely to keep Thomas and Candelario separate, to maximize their return for both players.
Austin Barnes
9:42
Dodgers pitchers keep getting lit up when Austin catches. Do you think LA replaces him or do they just hide him come October?
Mark P
9:43
Adding a new catcher in midseason is tricky, though bringing someone in for a backup role might be more feasible.  Or, LA could turn to their farm, since while guys like Freitas or Mazeika might not move the needle much, at least they have some experience in the big leagues
9:45
Hunter Feduccia is an interesting name to watch, as he's a rookie catcher currently tearing it up for the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.  Not that LA would call him up in the middle of a pennant race and give him a backup role, but he could certainly be a trade chip
Cubster
9:46
Any chance the Cubs buy? Maybe a 3rd baseman & some bullpen help them catch the brewers and reds??
Mark P
9:47
Cubs are still three games under .500, so they'll need to string together a few more wins this week to put themselves into more of a buyer's mentality.  They have at least put themselves into a position where it might come down to deadline day itself before they make that call one way or the other (and of course, the Cubs might also buy and sell at the same time)
Mitch White
9:47
How am I still on the jays roster and Nate Pearson and Zach Pop are in Buffalo? When Ryu is activated does Jay Jackson get sent down instead of me?
Mark P
9:48
With both Ryu and Chad Green coming off the IL in August, White probably isn't lasting much longer on the 26-man
Mr met
9:48
Are the Mets going to blow it up or stay pat at the deadline.
Mark P
9:49
Neither.  They're going to sell some veterans, but not "blow it up" since they want to contend next year.  I don't see a Scherzer or Verlander trade happening unless either guy suggests they want out

100 games in, SD is a mess. Time to fire Preller?
Mark P
9:50
The owner gave Preller a big vote of confidence recently, so he isn't going anywhere.  Preller's contract also runs through 2026.
Go Cubs Go
9:50
Odds of Belli and/or Stroman staying through the deadline and signing extensions?
Mark P
9:51
Zero percent chance on the extensions.  The Cubs apparently aren't talking a new deal with Stroman, and Bellinger is absolutely re-entering the market on the strength of his bounce-back year.

As to their trade value, like I noted earlier, the Cubs might not know their leaning until August 1 itself.
Ranger Rick
9:52
What are the Rangers looking at to strengthen their arms?
Mark P
9:54
They've reportedly talked to the White Sox about Lance Lynn, but if they've asked about Lynn, one figures they surely also asked about Giolito, Kopech, plus relief options like Joe Kelly

You think Acuna reaches the 40/40 Club? If soo who was the last player to have 40HRS 40SBs in single season
Mark P
9:55
Alfonso Soriano in 2006.  I had to look this up to confirm, since I thought that Matt Kemp had a 40-40 year but he just missed out by one homer

Cardinals have a history of strong 2nd halves.  Do you believe they can still make the playoffs?
Mark P
9:57
No.  The Cardinals' second-half surge tradition was one reason I wasn't writing them off for the first couple of months, but they just seem to be in too deep a hole at this point to leapfrog everyone
John
9:57
What players are out of play for the Orioles after the report in the Olney tweet?
Mark P
9:58
Maybe technically nobody, since the rival execs told Olney that the Orioles were keeping modest in their asks "for now."  Which, is a pretty reasonable stance to take on July 23.  Come August 1, you might see the O's relent and finally put one of their most notable prospects on the table for a bigger name acquisition, when teams finally start to get more serious about offers

Is SD a mess or just a weird flukey 100 games? 3rd best run differential in NL. 0-8 in extras seems insane to
Mark P
10:01
6-16 in one-run games too, which is another run of bad luck.  It could be that it just isn't San Diego's year, which is a tough pill to swallow for fans and the team itself
Re: Jays weaknesses
10:02
What about adding to an area of strength like the bullpen? It would be nice to have another arm that can close out games
Mark P
10:03
Since you can never have too much pitching, sure, I'm for it.  Especially since the Jays look to be keeping a five-inning leash on Manoah and Kikuchi, they'll have an even greater need for relievers.  Plus, Ryu's innings might also be limited as he eases back into action.

Like I noted earlier, the Jays do have Chad Green looming as an in-house relief upgrade
Azfan
10:04
Diamondbacks change their approach given their slump?
Mark P
10:05
As in whether or not they'll buy or sell?  I think they're buying regardless, unless they lost every game between now and the deadline or something.
Rockies fans
10:06
Is this the year we see Colorado trade Cron, Grichuk, Profar, Bard,  Suter, Hand, Johnson, Anderson, and Diaz? That would clear the way for Lambert, Toglia, Montero, Jones, Rodgers, etc to gain valuable playing time similar to the 2005 Rockies.
Mark P
10:07
Bud Black and Bill Schmidt have both somewhat implied that the Rockies will somewhat more open to selling than in past years, so I can see anyone from this group except maybe Diaz on the trade market.
10:08
I think it's long overdue for the Rockies to clean house and do their best to rebuild, though even that's tricky with the money committed to Bryant, McMahon, Senzatela, Freeland, etc.  But that shouldn't prevent the Rox from moving all the additional pieces around them and either creating room for youngsters, or at least raising the talent floor with more productive veterans
Expansion teams
10:09
When MLB expands do you think they’ll realign divisions or keep it the same with an unequal distribution?
Mark P
10:10
Eight divisions of four teams apiece seems like easy maths, so expansion will almost certainly lead to realignment

Thoughts on working a trade with Reds. So much young talent for Snell or Hader. Who do you think would the reds be willing to give up from there young studs
Mark P
10:13
Snell is a rental and Hader is only controlled through 2024, and due another hefty salary for his final arbitration year.  It seems unlikely that the Reds would get Votto off the books in 2024, only to mostly replace that salary space with a closer, albeit an elite one like Hader.

For that reason, Snell would seemingly be the likelier of the two pickups if the Reds did make a trade offer, and if the Padres were open to such a move and didn't think they can still make a run this year.  Again, Cincy is deep enough in prospects (particularly IF prospects) that they could make a significant offer for Snell and not put too serious a dent into their farm system.  It's possible the Reds might look for another controllable type of player from San Diego as part of a package deal, just not Hader

I know it’s fun to dunk in the Red Sox and Harte on Bloom.  But I really, really like this team.
Mark P
10:15
Most of Boston's offseason moves seemed good on paper, except they lacked that big acquisition to really top things off.  How much better would this already-good team look if they had another quality starting pitcher, for instance?
