Reds

Would you trade the reds return for Castillo for Cease? Marte, Arroyo, and a lower level prospect. Marte and arroyo’s value hasn’t seemed to budge much, both top 50 guys.

So basically just replace Castillo with Cease?  Interesting idea, except Cease is another player the Sox aren't moving unless they did pivot to rebuild mode.  And, since Cease is controlled through 2025, Chicago probably asks for more than the Castillo package, since Castillo was only controlled through 2022 and the rest of 2023

What should the Mariners do? I've heard Cahna's name tossed around
Mark P
10:18
That's the kind of lower-tier pickup that makes sense, since it isn't an all-in type of move, but Canha might not require that much in return and it would help bolster the outfield

Obviously we’re selling, but should we go past rentals and move guys like Skubal and Lange for big returns, or stick to the rentals? Assuming fair values for everything.
Mark P
10:20
Stick to the rentals.  It might be frustrating for Tigers fans to still be playing wait-and-see with so many key young players, but I don't think they'll unload Skubal or Lange and risk selling low

Braves optioned Soroka in favor of starting Chirinos who was just DFA’d. Is it right to assume there’s a lot of concern for Sorokas future after finally making it back?
Mark P
10:22
It isn't a surprise that Soroka has been shaky after basically three years off, so it's probably also safe to guess that the Braves haven't written him off entirely.  But, for a team competing for a pennant, Triple-A might be a better environment for Soroka to toss innings and more fully get into his groove

Will the Yankees empty the farm system trying to salvage the season?
Mark P
10:24
Nope.  The Yankees aren't going to go all-in for an outside shot at a playoff berth

Always hard to figure AA at deadline. Any chance the Braves stay pat. Seems like a sellers market.
Mark P
10:26
Not likely, based on both their pitching needs and AA's history.  It's possible Chirinos answers one question already, but adding another arm seems prudent, plus another depth bat for the lineup

Does anyone, including themselves, care that the Cubs largely have good periphs?
Mark P
10:27
No doubt the Cubs are also weighing these factors in their buy/sell dilemma

Could we get anything for Brent Rooker, Tony Kemp, or Estuary Ruiz?
Mark P
10:30
Kemp seem very likely to be moved, and despite his good hitting over the last few weeks, he won't garner a big return.  Rooker has had some hot stretches and has years of control remaining, but it's quite possible teams don't see him as worth a particularly interesting trade offer.  As for Ruiz, no way Oakland moves him

Is it just me or is this deadline too quiet? Why?
Mark P
10:31
The draft was taking up the attention of front offices until two weeks ago, plus at least 75% of teams are still "in it" to some extent or another, so they haven't decided yet on what they'll be trading
10:34
That's it for tonight's chat.  Thanks for all the questions, and we'll tentatively be back for more chattin' next weekend, unless there's a surge of pre-deadline news
