How can GM Krall look Reds fans in the face and after saying they have financial flexibility to be buyers and did nothing to help the team at the deadline? Yes they added 1 reliever but with 3 guys over 50 appearances they needed 1 or 2 more and a starter like Lorenzen. The Reds look like the 2022 version since the trade deadline. No energy, no urgency and no wins. But Krall had to extend Bell before he proved 2023 was not like 2021 when they blew it...

The Reds' inactivity surprised me, since they had such clear needs on the pitching side.  It's maybe similar to the 2022 Orioles actually selling at last year's deadline since they didn't get carried away by a good stretch of baseball, yet while last year's Orioles kept winning through August, the Reds have already gone into a slump.

This is another case where a front office might be correct in the big picture (since the Reds have only begun to tap the overall potential of their prospect base) but it's a tough beat for fans and the team in the short run

Is Bieber tradable this winter
Mark P
8:41
If he is able to return before the end of the season, or at least gets a clean bill of health via a physical after the year, yes.  Maybe even with some lingering injury doubts, another team will still go for a buy-low deal, but the Guardians probably don't want to sell low
World Series

Who do you have playing in this years World Series and who wins?
Mark P
8:43
My Astros/Cardinals preseason pick isn't looking great at the moment, so my pick as of August 6 is Atlanta over Houston.  The Braves have so much going for them right now, and I'll have to see someone knock off the Astros in the playoffs before picking against them

What’s the realistic timeline for the Nats to compete again? The lack of deadline moves, being on pace to win 15 more than last season and some contracts coming off the books in the next two seasons leads me it may be sooner than expected
Mark P
8:45
The larger ownership situation and the status of Rizzo/Martinez loom in this question, but Washington might get into the mix by 2025 depending on how things break with the younger players, if they can add some more young talent from the farm system or in further trades, or if they make an interesting signing or two this winter
Yea but

The Braves knocked the Astros off in the playoffs just 2 seasons ago
Mark P
8:46
Hmm, I realize I phrased that awkwardly.  I meant that I can't pick against the Astros in the AL until someone proves they can do it.  Atlanta over Houston is my pick in the WS

Over/under 60 hr's for Ohtani?
Mark P
8:48
It's awfully hard to hit 60 homers, so I tend to think he'll fall short.

Then again, predicting Ohtani won't do something spectacular maybe a fool's errand

Do the Braves trade Max Fried in the offseason if they are not going to re-sign him? Fried likely wants to head back out west
Mark P
8:50
The Braves had no problem letting Swanson and Freeman go to free agency, and I suspect they'll do the same with Fried.

Atlanta wants to win, period. Having Fried on the team is a safer bet than taking a chance on a trade, since that's a big arm at the front of the rotation that you then have to make up

do you think the Yankees will be sellers this offseason
Mark P
8:52
For TV ratings/ticket-selling/branding reasons, I don't think the Yankees will ever be true "sellers," even if taking a season to reload might make some sense.

Perhaps the most underrated aspect of the Yankees is their pitching, which has basically single-handedly (along with Judge) kept them over the .500 mark.  As long as the pitching development team is able to develop and rehabilitate some pitchers, a team will always have a chance, but New York absolutely needs to shake up that lineup with at least a couple of new bats

Boston has been in a tailspin since the deadline, but I find it hard to go against their decisions. Bad season/bad team/bad timing. It can be just that without having to completely sell or buy right?
Mark P
8:54
If you look at Boston's results all season, they're almost entirely a hot-or-cold team --- it's a lot of long win streaks or losing streaks, without many stretches of just "average" play.

It makes for a hard team to evaluate, and I don't entirely blame Chaim Bloom for not wanting to spend big at the deadline to build on what may be kind of a flawed foundation.  But, the Red Sox can generally hit so well that getting even one more starter seems like it would've really helped matters

8:54
Since the Marlins did make some moves at the deadline, do you see Miami getting better in the off-season?
Mark P
8:55
The Marlins will certainly keep adding in the offseason, they're pretty clearly wanting to win.  Might not happen in 2023 (their post-deadline results speak to that) but this is a franchise that badly wants to return to contention

Should I be concerned Tampa was willing to part w Manzardo? He’s having a bit of down year and his batted ball metrics aren’t great. Maybe Tampa is one step ahead as always
Mark P
8:57
The Rays don't lose many trades....but then again, the Guardians don't lose many trades.  It's an unstoppable force versus an immovable object here, but in general, Cleveland's evaluations of position players is spotty enough that the trade also raised my eyebrow

Are the Dbacks dead or still can right the ship?
Mark P
8:59
They're only 1.5 games out, and the Reds/Marlins also struggling has also helped the D'Backs stay afloat.  Obviously they need to get on track soon, but it's also way too early to write them off

Is a six man rotation for the remainder of the season feasible? It’s good for this stretch with no off days but later it means less starts for Gausman and others
Mark P
9:00
Toronto isn't going to use the six-man for the rest of the year, they're using it to provide some extra rest and to give some evaluation time to Ryu and Manoah
Mark

Can Rhys Hoskins realistically return this year and help?
Mark P
9:01
Despite the Schwarber precedent of 2016 (sounds like a legal case), the odds are very much against Hoskins making it back.  No harm in him aiming for a return and I hope he can do it, since it'd be a cool story

Jungle injury jeopardize ROY ?
Mark P
9:02
Since it looks like he'll miss at least a month even if he doesn't need surgery, yeah, that should mean that Yoshida or Henderson will take it
Curtis Mead
9:03
Does he stay long term or is this just a cup of coffee?
Mark P
9:04
Probably coffee.  The Rays routinely give even their top prospects only brief windows of playing time, unless they really catch fire early in their MLB careers

Never root for the A’s again?  How quickly A’s fans forget that they got their team from KC who got them from Philly.
Mark P
9:05
Yeah, but I'll bet not many people in Philly or KC still root for the A's after they left town

What type of trade value would a O’Neill, Carlson, Burleson, Edman, etc have in the off-season?   Cards need to trim the outfield logjam.
Mark P
9:08
Edman isn't having a great season, but he'd have the most value since he's the best of that group.  But, I highly doubt St. Louis moves Edman since he's a very useful player to have on a roster.

The Cardinals are in a tough spot, since while their OF is an obvious surplus, so many of that group have had underwhelming seasons.  The Cardinals don't want to sell low on another position player and see them blossom elsewhere, that's happened too often in recent Cards history.  But, that said, another team isn't likely to pay full freight on someone like O'Neill given his struggles over the last two years

The Angels made a mistake by not trading Ohtani right?
Mark P
9:12
In theory, yes.  But I also can't fault for the Angels for not wanting to trade such a special player, since....

a) what kind of realistically valuable return can you hope to get in a trade?
b) there was still a path to the playoffs, whereas trading Ohtani immediately dooms the team (and this era of Angels baseball) to infamy
c) Ohtani is still such a boon to TV ratings, merch, attendance, and awareness.  Even if the Angels do fall out of the race, they'll still draw interest over the last two months because of Ohtani alone
