Alot of Orioles fans are upset at our lack of a headline grabber at the deadline.  I'm fine with the Flaherty add being our sole addition.  Agree?
Mark P
9:16
Tend to agree, since Flaherty is a decent addition to a team that is already rolling.  It also seems likely that other clubs had particularly high asks when Baltimore came calling, since the O's are so deep in prospects

I live in the LA market and not a fan of either of the teams. Having said that, it’s felt like Othani to the Dodgers in the off-season was a done deal not so much anymore. The vibe now feels like he’s staying in Anaheim and that Moreno is realizing how much money he can make off of him and will now outbid everyone else no matter how stupid the contract has to be. It’s a vibes  question so curious as to how you’re feeling it right now?
Mark P
9:18
That is definitely not the vibe I'm feeling.  Moreno is no stranger to paying big for star players, but this is a league-record contract, and by this point Ohtani must be wondering if he'll ever win anything in Anaheim
James Paxton
9:19
Was there any real interest in Paxton last week do you know ? Seems like he could have been a sell high candidate with a prospect coming back. I was surprised Chaim Bloom didn’t move him for at least a mid level prospect.
Mark P
9:20
The Rangers and Dodgers both reportedly had interest in Paxton, but no dice.  Moving Paxton certainly makes sense for the exact reason you mentioned, but Bloom also must've been aware that it might've had a Josh Hader-esque effect on the clubhouse.
9:21
As in, "wait, we need starting pitching more than anything, but now we're trading one of our good starters?"
A's Ramon
9:21
Ramon Laureano has been designated for assignment. What are they thinking?  He has value, but lets nut trade him, lets cut him?
Mark P
9:22
The A's absolutely must've tested the trade market for Laureano prior to the deadline but found little to no interest.

Pirates spend some real prospects with the Mets this december and go big with Alonso, Quintana and Marte? Instant NL Central favorite?
Mark P
9:25
It would be very out of character for the Bucs to trade prospects for aging veterans without much long-term control, even if the Mets paid most of the salaries in this scenario.  Not happening.

9:25
Orioles .vs. Braves?
Mark P
9:25
Also wouldn't be a surprising Series matchup.  The Orioles have kind of a 2015 Royals vibe with their great bullpen, except with a higher offensive ceiling
Marky Mark
9:26
With the Mets kind of doing a quick reset, thr Ohtani market really does come down to the Dodgers and Angels, right? Any surprise team making a strong bid (600M min)?
Mark P
9:29
The Giants figure to be involved, after being willing to spend big on Judge and Correa last winter.  The Mariners are often mentioned as a dark horse contender.  Can't count out the Padres, even if Ohtani might have some real questions about their ability to contend.

Until shown otherwise, I'm sticking with west coast teams based on Ohtani's preferences during his initial entry to MLB.  The Rangers and Cubs were also included in 2017-18 due to their ties with Darvish rather than geography, and i guess I shouldn't rule out Texas since they've been as aggressive as anyone in spending over the last two years

9:29
Do you think the larger bases, pitch clock, etc..., are responsible for O's, DBacks, and Reds success and hurting Padres and Cardlinals?
Mark P
9:30
The limitations on the defensive shifts has clearly impacted the Cardinals a lot, especially since they have long been a team known for strong glovework

Salvador Perez been moved?
Mark P
9:31
The fact that it even seemed like a possibility is interesting, given how adamant the Royals were in the past about never moving Perez.

A trade won't happen without Perez's permission as a 10-and-5 player, and I wonder if he has made some indication to the front office that he'd like to go to a contender, if the Royals aren't going anywhere for the next few years
Pirates Fan
9:31
Will Rhys Hoskins be ready for Spring Training next year? Could the Pirates target him in free agency? Hoskins (if healthy) makes a ton of sense for Pittsburgh.
Mark P
9:32
A lot of teams will be looking at Hoskins as a one-year bounce-back candidates, and you're right that he is a nice fit for Pennsylvania's other team
A's fan #2

As a lifelong A's fan and Oakland resident, I, for one, am never going to root for the team again once they leave. Now the tricky part of who to root for next...

Plenty of room here on the Blue Jays bandwagon!

In the 10th inning a few games ago, Craig Kimbrel intentionally balked to move the ghost runner on 2nd base to 3rd base, so the runner could not steal signs from the catcher and relay what pitch was coming to the batter.   There seemed to be no penalty; should there be, or is balking intentionally legitimate?  Does an intentional balk violate the spirit of the game?
Mark P
9:35
I don't think there should be a rule against it, since Kimbrel was adding extra risk by letting the baserunner advance.  Suddenly a wild pitch or passed ball scores a run, for instance

Thoughts on nevin getting fired?
Mark P
9:37
Nevin only signing a one-year extension always seemed like a pretty clear sign that he wasn't seen as a long-term answer.  But, even while expecting him not to return for 2024, firing him probably shouldn't be ruled out either, if a desperate team is looking for a spark
Batting Crown
9:39
Ok another poll question. Who was the most obscure and forgettable batting champion in the last 25 years? Bill Mueller, carney Lansford, or John Olerud ?
Mark P
9:41
As a Jays fan, I strenuously object at the idea that the great Johnny O wasn't memorable.

Frankly, the concept of the "batting champion" has become more forgettable in recent years.  OBP, OPS, overall slash lines, and metrics like wRC+ have all overtaken batting average to the point that leading the league in average is kind of a footnote, rather than the big deal is used to be back in the day
Giants fan
9:42
Are there no Giants fans on this chat? Mark, can you give me something to look forward to as a giants fan in the coming year?
Mark P
9:42
Your team is good, leading the wild card race!

Guards traded Benson & Jones away and both are having respectable seasons while playing respectable outfield defense. What is the reason behind the guards inability to groom offense. Seems these 2 are prime examples of given up on high prospects who have had their potential unlocked in another organization. Guards have pitching development locked in, but the bats seem to be like needles in a haystack. What gives?
Mark P
9:45
Hard to say, and it's not like the Guardians have been total washouts at homegrown hitters (Jose Ramirez, obviously).

But the simplistic answer is just that finding and developing prospects is really hard, whether it's pitchers or hitters.  The Guards obviously know a few things about building a pitching pipeline, but it does seem like they need to change their approach when it comes to identifying hitters
9:46
It could be that they're so focused on the model of contact-first bats that they're letting players who don't exactly fit that model (but might be otherwise productive) go by

Rogers Hornsby could be best 2nd baseman of all time
Mark P
9:48
Also a fine candidate, but I think Morgan just bought more to the table
Tiger Fan
9:49
I know he’s been awful since the PED bust, but isn’t Detroit a pretty good pick to add Laureano for a few weeks and see what happens ROS? We’ve got 1 righty outfielder above AA and his name is Matt Vierling…
Mark P
9:50
As a short-term pickup, sure, couldn't hurt.  Tigers could use the rest of the season to see if Laureano might fit their future plans, and if not, just part ways after the year
