is josh reddick a fit for the jays?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Sure.
Ben
2:21
Vizcaino and Anthony Recker for Alex Cobb? Would either team do this?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
No way the Rays do that, IMO. Viz had major red flags and Cobb could be either a major piece of a 2017 contender or a huge deadline trade piece.
2:23
Recker doesn't really factor in, fwiw.
Trevor
2:23
With increased payroll flexibility this offseason, do you see the Angels being aggressive in order to return back to contention?
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
There's not that much flexibility unless they go over the luxury tax line (or it rises and they go up with it). Still a ton of cash on the books.

2:23
Two questions; 1- Do you anticipate Brandon Moss getting a qualifying offer from the Cardinals? 2-If in fact he does, will he likely accept it?
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
No, I don't think he will. And I think he'd have to take it.

With Bautista and Edwin likely leaving in free agency, and Gibbons likely gone due to the regime change in Toronto, any chance the Jays shop Donaldson for a kings ransom to reset the age of the roster to fit the prime years of Sanchez, Stroman, Travis, etc?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
That'd be awfully bold after two straight postseason appearances and several veterans on significant contracts. I don't see it.

Who is more likely to be signed by Atlanta, Matt Weiters or Wilson Ramos
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
Either could be targets in the right circumstances. Ramos injury almost makes it more likely ... maybe the Braves get creative? I really don't know how his situation will turn out. Depends a lot on his chosen strategy.

Derrek Norris had a better WAR than Hellickson, how flawed is WAR?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
I am not seeing any WAR metric that does that ... ? Helli is 3 and change on B-Ref and FG.
Anyway, the reason I was going to answer this is that I don't see why people always pick seeming outlier situations to complain about WAR. It is a rough tool, and anyone who uses it correctly acknowledges that. There will always be areas for improvement and situations that warrant adjustment. This is especially true for catchers.

How close are the Rockies to contending for a title?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
I don't see it as particularly close, but a few breaks could put them in the postseason. Really, as I explained in the "Three Needs" post, they just have a lot of roster spots to upgrade. Outside of their best ten or so players, they kind of sucked.
2:29
That's why I advocate for dealing CarGo -- get that cash off the roster, stick with the lefty OFers you have (and add a good RHB to go with them) and use the cash to add elsewhere.

If the Braves really wanted Jose Quintana, would that deal have to include Ender Inciarte? Please say no
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
I don't know how CWS feels about Ender, but no team is getting Quintana without giving up significant value.

How long can Molina catch 140 games? His defense has been in increasing decline for two years. Do you see the Cards using him at first (a big hole for them) if they can ever find a decent backup catcher?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
I keep thinking, "how are the Cards going to keep counting on Yadi for such a heavy load?" And yet, he just delivered a high quality campaign. I don't think they feel pressure and will want to see how their internal options line up. Certainly they see the need for a suitable backup, which is why they signed Pena -- he just ended up being hurt.

2:31
how do you rate Robert Glessman and Seth Lugo of the Mets? Both came out of nowhere it seems like.
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
So did deGrom ... but let's see how they look in a larger sample.

2:32
What kind of players would the Cardinals have to give the Rockies to get Blackmon? Would Weaver,Wong & Garcia be enough?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Doubt it. Bet they'd ask for Reyes to start (not that Cards would likely budge there).
2:33
You have to think about the needs of the other team in concocting trade scenarios, too. Wong really wouldn't be that useful for COL, and I can't imagine them liking the idea of taking on all that salary in a deal that involves giving up a fairly cheap, highly-performing asset.

What do you think the Nats do next year as Werth and Zimmerman back-up plans?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Off the cuff ... there are a lot of moving parts to that. Does Turner go to SS or become the regular CF? If the former, they need someone up the middle, unless they are going to roll the dice on some kind of Goodwin/Taylor combo. Turner/Espinosa also creates some possibility of using Murphy at first if that's needed.
2:35
Backing off of that a bit ... you could imagine a single, left-handed hitter serving to bolster both first and the corner OF.
Maybe a Brandon Moss type? He actually graded well in the OF by defensive metrics. Limited time, of course.

Who will be the twins catcher next year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
I don't know but I would like to take this opportunity to let Derek Falvey know that I am a free agent.

2:36
What kind of value or return could the Mets get for Jay Bruce in the off season. We have a plethora of lefty corner outfielders, and desperately need a catcher.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Well, they apparently viewed him as part of the 2017 plan. I don't think they added him with intentions of trading. And his value hasn't improved, certainly, since the deal.
2:37
Remember, too: there is a lot of need out there at catcher. But there are a pretty good number of good-to-solid corner OF types in FA.
JC
2:37
What about a McCann for Gio Gonzalez swap?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Not sure if the Nats are willing to part with the depth, and perhaps they'd want more back to do that kind of deal, but something along those general lines could make sense.
