With Miggy's contract expiring and ERod most likely walking... who do the Tigers target?  They need everything.
Mark P
8:58
It'll be interesting to see how Scott Harris approaches the winter, since the Tigers have had some progress --- Greene's looked really good, Torkelson has been better, and they've avoided a rotation-wide injury shortage.

That said, there are still so many questions that I can't imagine some big spending spree. The priority should obviously still be on adding hitting, but it'll be veterans on short-term contracts, since the Tigers might not start to really pivot until 2025

What could the Reds expect to get out of India if they do try to trade him this offseason?
Mark P
9:04
The plantar fasciitis is a real wrinkle, since between that and India's only okay numbers this season, his trade value certainly won't be at a high.

His remaining years of control and his ROY track record will certainly draw interest, but the Reds will face an interesting challenge in turning India into another long-term asset (like a SP, for instance)

What changes am I making in the front office, assuming I’m not looking for a new job next year?
Mark P
9:05
The Yankees need to take a hard look at their player development, specifically on the position-player side.
Cleveland?
9:05
whats the return for Bieber look like this off-season post elbow injury/uncertainty?
Mark P
9:06
Ha, now I'm picturing a scenario where the Reds and Guardians swap India and Bieber, except I don't think Cincy makes that move one-for-one.
Byron Buxton
9:07
Will I come back and play center field yet this season?
Mark P
9:08
The Twins are giving it some consideration, and if Buxton is physically able, some CF time might be beneficial just from a mental perspective for him.  Just to let him know that he can still play the field, and get him into a good mindset for 2024

Hader is a FA at years end!
Mark P
9:11
LOL, I think this is the second time in like a month that I've accidentally thought Hader still has another arb year remaining.  I'm not sure why I have such a mental block about this.  All those years of talking about Hader trade rumors because of his arb price tag and his future control....it's like I never thought he'd become a free agent
9:12
Anyway, Hader has the feel of a Phillies signing, with Dave Dombrowski again spending big on his bullpen

whats the deal with oswaldo peraza?
Mark P
9:14
As per my earlier comment on the Yankees player development, hopefully they don't give Peraza intermittent MLB playing time for the next two or three years, then unceremoniously DFA him.  It feels like the Yankees have done this with a lot of their highly-touted prospects of recent years, except for Volpe who they went all-in on playing every day
9:15
It could be that Peraza ultimately is a Quad-A kind of player, but especially on a NYY team that looks to be out of the playoff race, give hm an everyday role in September to see what you have for 2024

Do the Phillies offer me the Qualifying offer in the offseason? If so, do I accept it?
Mark P
9:16
Hoskins would absolutely accept it, but the Phillies just as absolutely won't be offering it

9:17
How do the white Sox compete next year?
Mark P
9:18
The AL Central is shaky enough that the White Sox suddenly contending next year wouldn't be the craziest thing in the world. But, here's another team that really feels like it needs a different approach to player acquisition and evaluation.
9:19
Chicago's offense hasn't been good, as Robert has the only standout season and Eloy has been okay, but injuries have again hampered him.  It's quietly a lot of holes the White Sox need to fill, probably more than can be fixed in one winter

9:20
Is this a tryout for who stays with the team next year? How can they fit EDLC, McLain, CES, India, Steer & Marte next season?
Mark P
9:21
Assuming Votto retires, they can rotate these six through the four infield spots, left field (Steer) and DH
9:22
Sort of like with the Mariners' pitching, the Reds' infield seems like a surplus for now, but injuries or the sophomore slump might certainly loom
Peter
9:24
Is this the end of the Brewers' window with Burnes-Woody-Peralta?  Gotta imagine they trade one this off-season before they hit FA.  Or do they run it back with all three next year?
Mark P
9:26
Peralta's contract is inexpensive enough that the Brewers will keep him, but yeah, it does seem like one of Burnes/Woodruff will be dealt this winter.  Both are free agents after 2024, and extending even one of them might be a bit of a surprise at this point.
9:27
My guess is the Brewers deal Burnes, since Woodruff's value will be pretty low after his injury-shortened year.  Moving Burnes in the offseason wouldn't be as sudden a blow as the midseason Hader trade last year, and it allows the Brew Crew time to reload with some win-now pieces since obviously they're still looking to contend
9:28
And of course, the Brewers might pivot and keep both pitchers, and instead move Adames
Just a fan
9:28
Who do you think the royals should get to help build around Bobby Witt
Mark P
9:30
Another team with a lot of holes, and maybe closer to a rebooted rebuild than to really contending.  Witt at least looks like the real deal and Maikel Garcia has been quietly very good in recent weeks, but due to injuries and underperformance, the Royals still don't know what they really have in Pratto, MJ, or Pasquantino
9:31
And, the rotation has been arguably a bigger disappointment than last year, since even Singer has regressed
Chris
9:31
What do you see the Nats doing this offseason? I can't see them spending much $ given that they're paying Strasburg, Corbin $70 million combined, and owe Scherzer $15 million in deferred money..
Mark P
9:33
Corbin is off the books after 2024, but unless their younger guys take some big strides next year, the Nationals might not be in full-on "go for it" mode until Strasburg's contract expires following the 2026 season.

That said, ownership has approved big payrolls before, so even having Strasburg as an albatross isn't a total impediment to the Nats spending big elsewhere. Or, spending wisely on lower-ticket players who can bounce back (i.e. Jeimer this year) or overachieve.
Cards fan
9:34
Tell me how the Cards can legitimately turn this mess around in 1 season to be competitive?  Not the weak central argument…how can the mess be corrected?
Mark P
9:36
It isn't entirely unusual for a team to have a quick bounce-back after a Murphy Law type of season, especially if that team happens to have Goldschmidt, Arenado, a more experienced Jordan Walker, Nootbaar, Winn's rookie year, etc.

But, it's a big challenge to basically overhaul your rotation in the span of one offseason, and the Cards are openly looking for at least three starters.  It'll take some canny trades, making the right decisions on which position players to keep or move, and hey, maybe if Albert Pujols wants to come out of retirement and hit nothing but homers for two months again, that would be great

9:37
does Whitt Merrifield get the 18 million qualifying offer?
Mark P
9:39
He has a mutual option worth $18MM ($500K buyout) anyway, so if that is declined, I can see Toronto issuing the QO anyway.  This feels like a situation where the Jays will try hard to extend Merrifield to a multi-year deal before reaching free agency, but if no extension is reached, a QO is a good fallback to at least recoup a draft pick.
9:40
And yeah, Merrifield's thoroughly solid season is going to attract multi-year deal attention in free agency, especially in a thin FA market
Jeff
9:41
Can you see a scenario where the Jays look to trade Vlady or Bichette?  This current group isn’t getting it done, and there’s not a lot of players with legitimate trade value under contract.
Mark P
9:42
Trading Guerrero would be a bold move, and the Blue Jays would be taking the risk of him unlocking his star potential on another team.  Then again, if he has another so-so year in 2024, his trade value and that "future superstar" buzz will diminish even further, so there's still a sell-high element now.
