It's funny, since if you asked me six months ago, I would've said to extend Vlad and trade Bichette.  However, Bichette has taken a good step forward on both offense and defense, whereas Guerrero has regressed in both areas.

When is Trout coming back?
Mark P
9:44
Apparently any day now, since the Angels even considered activating him between games of their doubleheader today

If the A's do move to Vegas do they move their  triple A team or do they think the market can handle to minor league teams.
Mark P
9:45
There's still so much uncertainty over how the Vegas A's will operate, but I'd have to think their Triple-A affiliate would have to move.  Perhaps in no small part because the A's would need that ballpark until their new stadium is ready?

Mattingly for Yankees manager in 2024

Fans have been wanting this for years, but the front office may not have interest

Can the Mets pull a just kidding we’re good again next year?
Mark P
9:48
Sure.  In fact, taking a more measured approach to the offseason might be the better play, if the Mets target some good veterans on shorter-term contracts to fill holes.  The 2013 Red Sox are the ideal example of this strategy, as they hit on basically every mid-tier signing and rode to the World Series

Have any unexpected marine biology facts?

The Juliorod shark is a rare type of marine creature (a Mariner, if you will) that gets a hit every single time it strikes

Who ends up as NL Wildcard?
Mark P
9:52
What a fun race this is going to be, with six clubs in the running (not counting whomever wins the NL Central).  Philly is the only team I'd put apart from the rest at this point, and it feels like the Giants' lack of offense will eventually catch up with them.

Also, don't look now, but the D'Backs have quietly started to turn things back around

Why did Rick Hahn trade me?
Mark P
9:53
The White Sox took a promising young starter in exchange for a player who looks like he might be a power-only guy with limited fielding ability.  Not a bad deal for the Sox in my view
Andy

Do you think that Cherington and Co. are developing a core of players that are going to be on the next playoff team in Pittsburgh? It feels like they have brought up a lot of young, exciting players, but not a lot of great ones.
Mark P
9:56
It's rare to have a rookie just totally break out and be great from day one.  I like what I've seen so far from the young Bucs, and I'm cautiously optimistic that they're on the right track
Brian

hey Mark, even if Woo comes back and the Ms go to a 6 man rotation will that be enough to keep all their pitchers fresh? Miller, Kirby, Woo and Hancock are all at their innings limits very quickly.
Mark P
9:58
Could be some creativity (piggybacking, bullpen games, one of the younger guys skipping a start even within a six-man framework) at play here, since the Mariners obviously want to get everyone not just through the season, but available in October in some capacity

Will Cleveland’s front office look for another power hitter in the offseason or will they be more hesitant after the bell signing?
Mark P
10:00
They'll surely want to seek out more power, but yeah, it is possible they'll be a bit more wary since the Bell/Zunino signings went nowhere.  The Guardians could pursue a trade instead of a signing, if they're willing to move one of the young pitchers for a young position player with similar upside.

Will they bring back August tradelines again?
Mark P
10:01
Probably not the secondary deadline, but in the next CBA, I suspect the trade deadline will get moved into the August 10-15 range rather than at the start of August

Can Cody Bellinger win the NL mvp if he keeps up his pace and the cubs make the playoffs?
Mark P

Nah, though Bellinger is obviously having a terrific year.
Fun note about the NL MVP....Betts slightly pulled ahead of Acuna in fWAR

My vision for the Red Sox is for their core to continue to emerge over the next 1-2 years, especially as Mayer gets closer to the bigs.  In the meantime, they add Yamamoto this winter and Soto the next.  Am I crazy?  I know the fan base looks at it like ownership won't spend that kind of money, but what I hear them saying is only they won't spend the money when their young core isn't ready yet.
Mark P
10:08
Yamamoto seems like a legit target for Boston this winter, even if Soto seems like maybe a bridge too far at this point

Obviously Bloom has some leeway to spend, since the Sox are still spending up to the luxury tax (or exceeding it) and Devers just got the massive extension.  His free agent expenditures have been a little more limited except for Yoshida, who is looking like a wise investment now.

So it remains to be seen what happens when/if Bloom really goes all in on a major FA name, or how aggressive he'll be.  Considering he was willing to significantly outbid everyone for a player he liked in Yoshida, maybe he can do the same with a bigger name?

Which FA starting pitchers make sense for the orioles this year?  Keeping in mind the aversion the os have for spending big on pitching.
Mark P
10:10
Speaking of teams who might check in with the Guardians about moving a good young position player for a good young SP....

This type of deal might be a better way for Baltimore to add pitching if they still have an aversion to spending big in free agency.  Plus, from a baseball writer perspective, that type of trade is just really cool.
Bay Area
10:11
With the giants having some money to spend, does it make sense to add in a great #2 with Nola at 5/130, Chapman at 4/62 and Bellinger at 7/200 ?
Mark P
10:13
I do think the Giants will be aggressive and land a top-tier FA this winter, after coming up short on Judge and Correa.

Chapman returning to the bay area but with the other team is an intriguing concept.  JD Davis seemed to have solidified that third base job earlier in the year but his bat has really cooled off badly over the last months (though then again, Chapman also hasn't hit much after his huge April)
10:14
Zaidi's preference to avoid longer-term SP deals makes me wonder if Nola will really be a target, but the Giants going hard after Bellinger would be fun, and yet more fodder for the SF/LA rivalry
BrewCrew
10:15
I agree with your statement that Burnes gets moved this off season, but look for the Brewers still to try to contend.  That means another winter of fans asking for a legitimate bat to add to the lineup.  Is someone like Matt Chapman a realistic option?
Mark P
10:15
Chapman is going to be out of MIlwaukee's price range

No doubt the Padres have a ton of talent but they seem to have a bunch of big egos that play for themselves instead of the team. I’m a big believer in team chemistry and feel like this is their biggest problem…thoughts?
Mark P
10:17
Chemistry isn't the obvious problem in my view, since who knows what's going on behind the clubhouse doors.

But, as simplistic as this sounds, there is something to the idea that the Padres have just been horrendously unlucky this year.  They're solidly outscoring their opponents, yet the 6-19 record in one-run games has killed them

Do the Phillies have another future hall of famer besides Harper on the current roster?
Mark P

Kimbrel has a good chance at induction. Trea Turner has a good shot if he bounces back from this aberration of a season.  Castellanos is getting inducted into the internet meme HOF, so he's got that going for him.
