Francona's health is the biggest factor in whether or not he keeps managing, not an arbitrary milestone
Black Ace57

What would it take for Cashman to actually be on the hot seat?
Mark P
2:27
He could drive around the Yankee Stadium parking lot with the World Series trophies tied to the back of his car?
Shane
2:28
After last year's Correa drama with his history of health, seems like Correa is proving all the teams wrong? I don't understand why the other teams were scared? He had been good for the Twins the last 2 years.
Mark P
2:29
This season has been an awfully mixed bag for Correa.  Can't imagine the Giants or Mets are kicking themselves too hard about not completing that signing.

Am I a legit Cy Young Contender?
Mark P
2:30
No, since there are too many pitchers having better seasons.  But that shouldn't detract from what has been a tremendous breakout year.
Twins fan
2:32
Thoughts on Twins season so far? Starting pitching better then I expect but their hitting isn't as good as I hope
Mark P
2:33
I wrote earlier about the Brewers kind of flying under the radar, and the same could maybe be said of the Twins.  They've quietly turned things on in the second half, and while the AL Central isn't locked up just yet, the Twins are certainly in the driver's seat.  The way the West teams are struggling, it's not even out of the question that Minnesota could end up as the #2 seed in the AL bracket.
2:34
In short, it seems like Minnesota is hitting its stride at the best time

Of Kiermaier, Whittfield, Ryu, Chapman, who returns to the Jays next year.
Mark P
2:37
Chapman definitely seems gone, Merrifield is probably not having that option exercised and he'll depart.

I can see a path to either Kiermaier or Ryu returning, if the Jays want to somewhat just run it back with their defense-first outfield and want Ryu to provide extra rotation depth given Manoah's uncertainty.  But, Ryu will want more than just a "depth" contract, and it remains to be seen how much more the Jays want to invest in the rotation

Are the diamondbacks regretting the Varsho trade? Is he a bust or is there any hope left?
Mark P
2:38
I don't think Arizona is upset at all how things have turned out.  Varsho's big regression at the plate is an issue for the Jays, however, since that trade is a significant miss if his ceiling ends up being a strong-defending fourth outfielder type

Are the dodgers better off using Lance Lynn in the playoffs or one of their rookies?
Mark P
2:39
They'll need all hands on deck, given the lack of pitching options available

Between Goldschmidt, Baker, and Burleson who’s the odd man out? Don’t need 3 first baseman
Mark P
2:41
Goldschmidt is on a whole different plane than the other two guys, so it's really just a question of which backup will the Cardinals keep.  The answer might even be neither, since neither Baker or Burleson are any kind of untouchable piece that wouldn't be moved for pitching
Minasian
2:42
Looks like trades did not work out. What to do in off season? Trade Trout slow reboot with young players help me Mark.
Mark P
2:45
First off, Minasian might not be calling the shots, since it wouldn't be surprising to see Arte Moreno clean house.  The situation is dire enough for the Halos that a total rebuild might be the wisest course of action, but Moreno has never been one to really step back and retool things.

Trout has a full no-trade clause, so he'll only be moved if he wants out (and he can direct a deal to a team of his choosing).  It's fair to assume that Trout is as frustrated as anyone at how the Angels have performed, but only he knows if he's ready for a change of scenery

I believe when I brought up Dominguez first week of August, your reply was that he was hitting .220 in AA.
Mark P
2:46
In the words of Monty Python, he got better
2:47
For a more serious answer, in early August the Yankees still thought they had a shot at the playoffs.  As they fell back, their priorities changed, and it became about looking ahead to 2024 and giving the kids a look.  Dominguez picked it up at Double-A and in his brief time at Triple-A, and earned himself his MLB debut

If you had to pick a Free Agent to be Oakland's starting 3B in 2024, whom would it be and what does the contract look like?
Mark P
2:49
Given how the A's are trying to emulate Major League, don't rule out a signing of Roger Dorn
The A's aren't spending money this winter, so a low-cost veteran type (i.e. Brian Anderson, Joey Wendle) seems likeliest

2:52
When is the waiver trade deadline coming back?  Lots of teams fell out of it in August and would have been nice to have some player movement.
Mark P
2:53
I'm all in favour of the idea of an August 15 trade deadline, which gives more time for teams to decide whether they're in or out, and more space between the draft and the deadline for front offices to focus
Also, given all the waiver wire craziness, this was a pretty active August

Should the jays trade vladdy ? What kind of package would we get back ?

Hey, a certain MLBTR writer had a post about Vlad just last weekend....
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/09/vladimir-guerrero-jr-s-unusual-...
2:58
Guerrero's disappointing season has certainly caught the attention of the league as a whole, but he'd naturally get a lot of trade interest if the Jays were actually open to moving him.  There are undoubtedly plenty of clubs who think they can unlock him as a consistently elite bat, though this adds to the Jays' difficulty if they did shop him.

How do you properly get equal value back for a player who might be great with a mechanical change.  Or, on the flip side, is this the best time to still sell mostly high on Guerrero if the Jays have any doubts that he can actually be a top-tier bat?

Is Giolito pitching himself into a one year deal? I can’t see someone giving him a big contract the way this year is going
Mark P
3:02
It's been a strange few weeks for Giolito to say the least, and I can see a scenario where he takes a shorter-term deal with an opt-out in the hope of having a better 2024 campaign.

The counter to that scenario is that pitchers can always land big deals, so even with the uncertainty of his last few starts in the books, Giolito is still in good shape to land a lucrative multi-year pact.  It's just a question of how he wants to approach maxing out his dollars, whether it's via an option, big incentives clauses, some kind of vesting deal, etc.

3:04
With the Nats having a reasonable year, and the youngsters generally taking positive steps, does the time frame to compete move up enough to sign better free agents than the 1 year variety next year?
Mark P
3:06
Probably not, since while the Nats been better, 63-78 isn't exactly the record of a team that's on the cusp.

There's also the external factor of whatever is going on with Rizzo's extension, or the possible team sale, or ownership looking to apparently cut costs throughout the front office.  This doesn't smack of an organization that is ready to pivot back towards contending.  2024 seems like it'll be another building year for the Nationals, and if all goes well, the 2024-25 offseason is when the purse strings might start to open

Cashman hasn't done anything in 20 years with a unlimited budget.  He needs to  go!
Mark P
3:07
To pull a Mike Trapp, "um actually, the Yankees won the World Series in 2009.  That is within the last 20 years."

It's the best kind of correct, technically correct!

And the SMU Huskies and Acadia Axemen played some football last evening too!

Most pressing question in baseball.
Will Gausman's haircut affect the AL wildcard race?
Mark P
3:10
Gausman is really tempting fate with that haircut.  Has he never heard of the story of Samson? Or the story of Keri Russell?
