No, unless they shock everyone by drastically changing their spending strategies

Do the Yankees have a chance at the playoffs?
Mark P
8:21
Jim Mora voice: PLAYOFFS?!

I won't lie, the upcoming games between the Jays and Yankees did get me nervous, considering New York has been playing really well lately.  But it would take a pretty historic hot streak and a collapse from two of Texas/Toronto/Seattle to accommodate the Yankees sneaking in
Jason
8:22
If the Cubs fail to make the playoffs, do you see them making changes in the front office or manager.
Mark P
8:22
Probably not
Minasian
8:23
Am I gone? If not what direction should Angels take?
Mark P
8:24
Since it seems likely Ohtani is leaving, an argument can definitely be made that the Angels should tear things down and do a proper rebuild.  That hasn't at all been Arte Moreno's way as an owner, however, and there's probably a better chance he still looks to spend big this winter as a way of "proving" that the Angels didn't need Ohtani to win.
8:25
Whether Minasian is part of this or not is anyone's guess.  A new GM/manager certainly seems possible if the Angels look to turn the page yet again.

Same question my big brother asked, but for bullpen arms. Who needs me the most next year?
Mark P

do the dodger resign enrique hernandez?
Mark P
8:27
Decent chance.  He's a known quantity and a useful bench piece to have on hand.  Hernandez's price tag obviously won't be terribly high this winter, so he wouldn't cost much to retain.

I have a very strong feeling that Clayton Kershaw will be calling it quits after this season. What do you think?
Mark P
8:29
Kershaw himself might not know the answer to this question yet, as he might take a few months to consider his options and see how he's feeling after the season.  Like previous years, I expect the Dodgers will be patient in waiting to see what he has to say.

What should the Reds do this off season?
Mark P
8:32
Pick up at least one good veteran starting pitcher.  They have some interesting young arms for the rotation, but adding at least one proven front-of-the-rotation type would a long way towards solidifying the pitching situation.

From the position player side, not much?  So much of the next core is already in place, the Reds might target versatile bench types for backup roles.  And, of course, figure out what Joey Votto wants to do, since if he wants to keep playing, I could see the two sides working out a two-year extension (rather than the Reds picking up the $20MM club option)

If the Jays would rather not have Chapman back, they’d have to really make careful calculations before extending a QO right?
Mark P
8:34
The position-player market is thin enough that Chapman is still likely to land a hefty multi-year deal, even if this certainly isn't the kind of platform year he would've wanted.

A two-parter: what’s the best stadium? Best stadium hot dog?
Mark P
8:36
I'm not a big hot dog connoisseur, so I'll leave that one to the other commenters.  But as for best stadium, my favorite is PNC Park in Pittsburgh
8:37
That one took a few extra seconds to write since I realized I had no idea how "connoisseur" is spelled

Chances Yankees trade dj and gleyber and go with youth movement
Mark P
8:40
Gleyber is a free agent after 2024, so he stands out as an interesting trade candidate if the Yankees did want to create more room for the kids (while also addressing other needs at the same time).

LeMahieu is a tougher sell, with $45MM still owed through 2026 and he'll have 10-and-5 no-trade protection after the season.  Probably the Yankees would ideally like to unload DJLM if they could, but it's a tricky fit for a trade match without eating money

With Flaherty almost going to the rays, do they know what names were discussed going back to stl?
Guest
8:41
Who did the Rays supposedly offer STL for Flaherty and who was injured to void the trade?
Mark P
8:42
Not known. It's interesting to keep an eye on for the offseason, should St. Louis and Tampa engage in any more trade talks.  Perhaps some of the names discussed last summer might still end up with the Cardinals as part of another deal
Orlando

Who’s the best player you’ve seen play in person?
Mark P
8:43
Bonds, Ohtani, Trout, Griffey, Clemens, Randy Johnson, Davis Schneider.....I've been fortunate to see a lot of great players in action over the years.
Rob
8:44
Do you think he Jays front office should carry much blame.  I think most of us expected this to be a good offensive team.  The fact that nobody has produced at a star level (and that Manoah imploded) was out of their control after the team was built (and yet, they're in a playoff spot and no, this is not Ross Atkins)
Mark P
8:46
Well Ross....er, Rob, anyone in the front office would've said that getting into the playoffs was the absolute minimum expectation for 2023.  At the end of the day, the front office put this flawed roster together, so they certainly have to face their share of blame.  Obviously unknown stuff happens every year and the Manoah situation was unforeseen, but some of the Jays' issues (lack of depth, question marks in the lineup) were present going into the year
Ryan G
8:47
Is there a scenario you can see the Giants actually sign some star power to compliment the young talent? If so, like who?
Mark P
8:48
I feel like I've suggested this tactic before in regards to the Giants, but if the club is willing to spend, they should use those dollars in a different way than simply targeting free agents.

Why not just absorb a big contract in a trade, giving up on a minimal prospect return to ease another club's payroll burden?  Or, take on a big contract as sweetener to get a trade target they really want off another roster?

Verlander, Framber, JP France, Christian Javier, Hunter Brown, Jose Urquidy and a returning Lance McCullers Jr and Luis Garcia next season, do you see a pitcher traded either this offseason or during next season?
Mark P
8:49
I don't see the Astros moving any pitching until they know everyone is healthy.  Given how far down the depth chart they had to go this season, they'll want as many arms as possible for 2024

Good evening Mark . In your opinion is the relocation vote a mere formality or is there some  hope
Mark P
8:51
By all accounts it seems like a formality.  Which is pretty weird in my view since you'd think the league and other owners might want to clarify where exactly the A's will be playing until their Vegas ballpark opens in 2028
Ed
8:52
Has Tyler O'Neill ruined all of his trade value with another visit to the IL.
Mark P
8:52
He'll still have some value since plenty of teams will see him as a change-of-scenery guy.  Of course, it'll be tricky for the Cards to appropriately gauge value for him on the market given his last two seasons, since they won't want to just give him away
Kerry carpenter
8:53
Why don’t I get a whole lot of attention compared to the other rookies?
Mark P
8:54
Well, he isn't a rookie, for one.  Got too much playing time in 2022.

The Tigers are off the radar enough that Carpenter's big season hasn't gained a lot of notice....except, of course, from a certain MLBTR writer and chat connoisseur
