What are the Orioles’ priorities this offseason? Does the length of their playoff run mean anything in terms of what they do this winter?
Mark P
8:58
Another relatively quiet offseason in Baltimore seems entirely possible.  For one, John Angelos' comments about spending seems to indicate that no huge payroll boost is coming in the near future.  Secondly, the O's probably still want to see what they have in a lot of young players, so they might not do much of anything on the position player side.

Even with pitching, they'll probably get some bullpen help in through natural year-to-year turnover.  For the rotation, they probably add another veteran to replace Kyle Gibson, maybe at a slightly higher tier and with slightly more money.

If Tito retires who should Cleveland look at to be the next manager?
Mark P
9:00
Hale and Alomar will get the first looks, and either of them is an easy hire if the Guards just want to stay in-house.  Since Francona has been so touch-and-go about returning in recent years, surely the Guardians have some manner of succession plan in place, whether it's simply promoting from within or bringing in a completely fresh voice

What kind of MLB front office position would you want if you had to give up your writing gig?
Mark P
9:01
Haha, I wrote a post last night with a note about the Tigers' GM search, and a friend texted me to say I should apply. And hey, Detroit is even pretty close to my hometown!
9:02
So, if Scott Harris is reading this chat.....please hire someone more qualified than me, for the sake of Detroit's fans

Is this the most you’ve used the word connoisseur in a chat before?

Shockingly, yes!

is Gerrit Cole on the trade block this offseason?
Mark P

No chance

Rumors were the Sox shopped Verdugo at the deadline. If they do again this offseason who would likely be interested?
Mark P
9:04
Moving Verdugo seems very conceivable, since there doesn't appear to be much movement towards an extension and Verdugo is a free agent after 2024.

Any number of teams could fit, whether it's a contender looking to fill an outfield hole or a rebuilding team looking for a one-year addition that could possibly be flipped at the deadline.  Verdugo hasn't had a great season, but he's got a good deal of trade value, with the acknowledgement that the Sox wouldn't get a huge return

You must have never been there.
Mark P

I have been to Oracle, and it's a great ballpark, arguably #2 on my list

Do the Mets have a decent shot at signing Ohtani? Can’t imagine Uncle Stevie getting outbid.
Mark P
9:08
If money really is no object for Cohen and he's willing to offer something wild like $600MM, I assume that would be really difficult for Ohtani to turn down.  That said, he's doing to make a fortune wherever he goes, and is already pulling in a secondary fortune through endorsements.

Do you think the Phills will take a look at Trout since he is a local guy if he asks out?
Mark P
9:12
They'll absolutely ask, but Trout has full control over the situation since he has a no-trade clause.  Most reports about Trout indicate that he kind of likes some separation between his work life in Anaheim and his home life in the Philly area, and that might continue if he did explore a new team.

But, ultimately, only Trout knows what he wants.  If he's exasperated enough to request a trade, maybe he'll just want to go to any winning team, and location isn't a big concern

Giants trade Desclafani and Stripling to Detroit for Baez - salaries match for 2024. The last three years of Baez, they split down middle 36M each. Who says no?
Mark P
9:14
The Giants, because why would they want Javy Baez after his last two seasons?
Soto
9:14
Will the Padres extend me?
Mark P
9:16
Peter Seidler's public comments indicate that this season won't change the Padres' overall plans, so an extension can't be entirely ruled out.

But, the wiser move might be to move Soto this offseason in a trade that addresses other needs (like pitching).
9:17
With Bogaerts, Machado, Darvish, Tatis, Musgrove, Cronenworth all locked up to big deals and a lot of other needs on the other, committing more huge money to Soto doesn't seem feasible.
Even for a Padres team that has had no qualms about spending

Have to wonder where Bloom ultimately winds up.
Mark P
9:19
It might be a while before he gets another crack at running a front office, but Bloom won't be hurting for job offers.

No way Bautista is back for the playoffs, is there? He’s been throwing…
Mark P
9:22
I cannot imagine the O's would risk rushing Bautista back too soon, so they're proceeding with a lot of caution here.  It's not uncommon for pitchers with some level of UCL damage to throw just to test things out, and to see if they can pitch through discomfort or rehab without surgery.
9:23
But, pitchers who do this generally take their time in rehabbing, and aren't on a ticking clock to the postseason like Bautista.  I'd still consider it unlikely that he returns this year, but stranger things have happened

Mark:Good Evening. With the Marlins playing plus ball this month, would you opine that they make the playoffs this year?

Who are the NL wild card teams gonna be besides Philly?
Mark P
9:27
Such a tight race in the NL.  I think I favor the Cubs and Diamondbacks at the moment, but really none of the contenders getting in would surprise me
Come on, do it

And on that happy note, let's wrap things up.  Thanks for all of your questions, and the weekend chat will recommence next....uh, weekend
