McKenzie spoke about how he'd get peace of mind in being able to put his injury fully behind him heading into 2024, and a lot of players coming off extended IL stints have that same mindset.  The psychological aspects of baseball shouldn't be discounted, and since McKenzie was healthy and ready to pitch, the Guardians figured there was no downside

am i the padres manager next year?
Mark P
7:56
My guess is no

This week, Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin wrote a pretty insightful look at the issues within the Padres organization, and while Melvin is hardly the biggest problem (or necessarily even a problem at all), firing the manager is the easiest call to make for a shakeup

Mike Trout
7:57
I just went on the 60-day IL, will that affect my value, along with the fact over the past few seasons I have not been able to stay healthy. This is being said because prior post said I may seek a trade...is my value down?
Mark P
7:59
The injuries can't be ignored, so Trout's value is certainly down for those reasons, and obviously his contact automatically rules a number of teams out of the running.

That said....it's still Mike Trout.  He'll still get a lot of attention if he's actually available on the trade market, both for his talent and the fact that several teams probably think their training staffs can better help him stay on the field.  Trout has a no-trade clause and will be able to more or less control his next destination, and who knows what specific factors (besides, obviously, a winning team) would go into his decision.

Don’t u think it’s best for Angels to keep Trout and show he is healthy heading into 24?
Mark P
8:00
This is another possibility, though aiming to perhaps move Trout at the 2024 trade deadline runs the risk that he might get hurt again.

Did we miss on the Flaherty trade?
Mark P
8:03
The early returns haven't been good, but if Flaherty does well as a multi-inning reliever in the playoffs, O's fans will feel a lot better about that deal

Who mans the open to IF spots next year?  Can't see the Jays spending the money on Chappy or Whit.
Mark P
8:08
Espinal will probably be gone as well, and I agree that Chapman and Merrifield are both unlikely to be re-signed.

Biggio, Schneider, Orelvis Martinez, and Addison Barger are all in the mix as in-house answers, yet that's an awfully inexperienced group for a contending team to count on for two infield spots.  My guess is that Toronto acquires an everyday 2B or 3B, then lets the others fight it out for a regular or platoon role at the other spot, and for bench duty

8:09
Do the Brewers exercise Mark Canha's option?
Mark P
8:12
Milwaukee has an $11.5MM club option on Canha's services for 2024, with a $2MM buyout.

So that's a $9.5MM decison for the Brew Crew to make, and Canha has played so well that I could actually see them sticking with him.  First base is a need position anyway, and there's enough flexibility with the outfield and DH spots that Milwaukee could find room and at-bats for Canha even if they did acquire someone else for first base

Who do you think will make the NL Wild Card? (Phillies, Dbacks, Cubs?)
Mark P
8:14
Philly's spot seems assured, barring a dramatic collapse this week.  The Marlins' schedule is relatively easy so I kind of like their chances of sneaking in, so it's a tossup between which of Arizona and Chicago gets into that third spot

8:15
Do you think Joey Votto will stay with the Reds, sign with a new team, minimum 1 year, or retire entirely following his curtain call?
Mark P
8:16
My guess is he comes back for one more season, staying in Cincinnati on a reworked one-year contract.  I think we can rule out Votto playing for another team.

Twins have a chance to the next round?
Mark P
8:18
Absolutely.  Minnesota has quietly been playing some very strong baseball in the last month, seemingly peaking at the right time.

What is your take in the Jeff Greenberg hire?
Mark P
8:21
I did a double-take when I saw the initial headline of "Tigers hire GM from the Blackhawks' front office," but Greenberg has a long history in baseball.  If anything, it was stranger from the Blackhawks' perspective to hire him away from the Cubs in the first place.

Also, Hockey Town is basically the perfect city to have a baseball GM with NHL experience, right?
Mariners
8:23
due we finally sign a real DH and enough of this platoon 225 hitters
Mark P
8:24
While some better personnel is indeed required, I do agree with the strategy of rotating a few players through the DH spot, rather than locking the position up with one singular full-time DH.  Unless that guy is a true premium bat, keeping the DH spot free is a good way to keep multiple players on your team fresh.

8:25
Could you see the Nats going after Jordan Montgomery this offseason?
Mark P
8:25
Nope.  The Nats aren't ready to make a win-now move yet, and Montgomery is going to prefer a team with a clearer chance of winning immediately

8:27
Is Biggio an option to replace Chapman at 3rd next year?
Mark P
8:28
The Blue Jays have spent the last three seasons finding guys to play ahead of Biggio, so I don't think they suddenly see him as a regular option now.
Cora
8:30
Cora to GM Tek to Manage ?
Mark P
8:31
This has been rumoured as a possibility, with Cora basically acting as the head of the longstanding assistant GM mix Boston has had in place for several years and through several front office bosses.

Not sure if it's a realistic possibility or if Cora would even want such a bigger set of broader responsibilities

world series prediction for this year?
Mark P
8:35
My preseason pick of Astros vs. Cardinals is officially not happening, which one might've figured out by around mid-May.

So with that off the board, I'll now predict a World Series matchup of....Baltimore vs. Philadelphia.  Rematch from 1983, with Phillies fans hoping for a different outcome.

Why are the Rays building a 30,000 person stadium in St. Pete's and signing another 30-year lease? Aren't they just repeating the mistakes from Tropicana Field, except with a smaller stadium?
Mark P
8:37
It's a curious outcome, but it seems like the Rays and the city are confident that a new ballpark and the accompanying "ballpark village" environment will help spur attendance and revenue.
Alex
8:37
In the scheme of things, is the losing season for Yankees a blessing as it is forcing an examination of the org as a whole and made them let the young guys get a shot?
Mark P
8:39
Quite possibly, as it took missing the playoffs in those mid-10's years to spark the "Baby Bombers" era and get the team somewhat back on track.

Making the ALCS perhaps gave New York's front office some confidence that this team was closer than it really was, but now it seems like they're acknowledging some hard decisions have to be made
