Is Christopher Sanchez legit?
Mark P
8:41
Sure seems like he's earned himself a rotation spot for 2024, at the very least

Cody B has been in a slump recently but had such a great season. Does the slow end hurt his chance for a monster contract, given he’s probably the best FA not named Ohtani?
Mark P
8:42
It's not going to hurt his chances much, if at all

Could the Jays trade Kikuchi this off season for a controllable piece similar to how they traded Teo last off season?
Mark P
8:43
The Jays already need a fifth starter for next year since they don't know what they're getting from Manoah.  So while selling high on Kikuchi makes some sense, the Blue Jays aren't likely to further thin out their rotation depth.

Keep in mind, the Jays got very lucky with SP health this year.  That kind of good fortune usually doesn't last for two years in a row

If John Means wasn't part of the playoff rotation before yesterday, he definitely is now. Kremer or Gibson for the last spot?
Mark P
8:45
I'd think Kremer gets the nod in that decision, or maybe he's the #3 and Means is the fourth starter

Are the Nats a 500 team next year?
Mark P
8:46
Probably not, since they're in a tough division and I think they have a few too many holes.  That said, stranger things have happened than a "rebuilding" team suddenly taking a big step forward, so if Washington makes some canny short-term acquisitions this winter, challenging for a winning record is definitely feasible

It wasn't just an exploding building. It was an exploding fireworks factory that a tanker tuck had crashed into, but point taken.

Ah, got it.  I wasn't paying close attention since Lt. Drebin told me there's nothing to see here

How much do you think teams truly factor in prospect of the ROY winner draft pick in deciding who breaks camp with big league team? Will Jackson Holliday start in majors next year? The Orioles will have several other “chances” at the pick again next year between possibly the likes of Mayo, Ortiz, Cowser, Kjerstad, Norby… does that make it less likely Jackson breaks camp?
Mark P
8:48
I think Holliday will be on the Opening Day roster for both PPI purposes and the fact that he just seems like a really special player. He might be MLB-ready at this very moment, let alone by April

With both Oakland & Tampa Bay situations mostly resolved how long until the next expansion and how many teams? Please bring mlb to Portland.
Mark P
8:50
I can see two expansion teams being named prior to the end of the current CBA, so those new clubs then be factored into the next agreement.

Full approval of the A's move to Vegas is expected to happen before the year is over, and then I'd expect the league to start fielding bids

What do you make of the Young Bucs surge the last 60 days? Great promise for next year?
Mark P
8:53
Strange year for the Pirates in having a great start and great finish, but a lot of mediocrity in between.  You can see some of the pieces in place, however, so this is still the most promising Pirates season in ages

How do you think the trade market will play out given how shallow this year’s FA class is?
Mark P
8:55
Could very well be a replay of last year, when teams splurged in free agency because they were more willing to spend than surrender prospect capital in trades.

Then again, the Mets and Padres aren't likely to be driving the market to nearly the same extent this offseason, so things could be somewhat more normalized.  There's also the factor of how long Ohtani takes to decide on his next team, and to what extent waiting for Ohtani will keep the Dodgers/Mariners/Giants/whomever else from making other big moves in the interim

My local fans are few and far between, and I'm almost never 'right' according to them. I mean, I'm managing games exactly the way I was hired to do. Am I to be perplexed?

You can count on one hand the number of fanbases that are fully satisfied their team's manager

18 HR from outfielders in Cleveland. Will this off-season be the one where they finally trade frlm
Mark P
9:01
I assume the rest of this message was going to be "from their pitching depth" or something, since that's the most logical way for the Guardians to add a bat.

It's not like the Guards haven't been trying to add power, it's just that the Bell/Zunino signings didn't pan out whatsoever.  They should absolutely try again to add pop in some fashion this winter, since it's just such a glaring weakness holding the club back

San Jose gets a MLB team before Portland. SJ's population is larger than SF's, they shouldnt be tied to a smaller city having a team 55 miles away.
Mark P
9:03
You'd think not, but MLB's byzantine rules on territorial rights have apparently given the Giants leeway over the entire "Bay Area," whatever that entails.  The exception is Oakland itself, but I don't know if the Giants would also gain rights over Oakland in the event that the A's move

Keep in mind that the A's themselves looked into moving to San Jose and Fremont, but were thwarted by the Giants' territorial rights

Has the removal of the shift helped Freeman get 57 doubles ?
Mark P
9:04
Probably helped to some extent, but even though this is clearly a new high for Freeman, it's not like he hasn't had big doubles seasons in the past.

Sadly it doesn't seem like he'll be able to take down the all-time record of 67, set by Earl Webb in 1931.  One of my favourite obscure baseball records.

Dodgers or Cardinals are the Yamamoto favorites?
Sox will…
9:06
Redsox in on Yoshinobu Yamamoto n what will be his cost? What influences him… money?. Fame?
Mark P
9:08
He's going to get an absolute fortune, probably close to $200MM since he's still so young (just turned 25 last month).  That probably rules out the Cardinals since they don't usually play in that price range, whereas the Dodgers often do.  If Ohtani signs elsewhere or his surgery has given the Dodgers any second thoughts, they could pivot right to Yamamoto as something of a nice silver medal of a signing.

The Red Sox aren't short on big-money signings in their history, but naturally we'll first have to wait and see who's taking over the front office and what approach they'll take (or what approach ownership wants them to take)
Clever name here

How long a leash does Bud Black have? Rockies will lose 100 for first time ever, but he didn’t have much to work with and injuries to the rotation were brutal.
Mark P
9:13
Black has been signed to a pair of one-year extensions in each of the last two Februarys, so while the Rockies like him enough to keep him around, they seem fine just going year-to-year rather than making a true longer-term commitment.

It's another sign of how the Rockies tend to do things a little differently than other clubs, which also makes it hard to evaluate whether or not they think a managerial change is necessary.

I agree with you that Black had little to nothing to work with on this roster, which seems to be an odd pattern of his career.  Black has four winning seasons in parts of 16 years as a big league skipper, yet since he's been the skipper through some difficult periods for both the Padres and Rockies, it's still hard to gauge his actual quality as a manager

Arenaudo 3b for Boston ? Move Devers to Dh ?
Mark P
9:16
Moving Arenado would be a foundational change for the Cardinals and one that I doubt they're going to make since they want to win in 2024.

Could Vancouver be in play as an expansion city?  Or would both the M’s and Jays try to block it?
Mark P
9:17
Vancouver isn't mentioned much as an MLB expansion possibility, likely for this very reason.

Then again, the Mariners might welcome a new local rival just to decrease their huge stack of travel miles every season

Where do you see Chaim Bloom landing in the future, and did he get a fair chance in Boston
Mark P
9:21
Bloom seems like a solid executive who was given an extremely difficult task from day one, to say nothing of the added and unforeseen obstacle of the pandemic immediately ruining his first season in charge.  There were some questionable moves to be sure, yet in the bigger picture, Bloom did some things that might well pay off for the Sox as soon as 2024

He'll certainly get an assistant or advisory job in another front office quickly he wants to, and it wouldn't be a shock if he got another GM job down the road
