Who is the next Red Sox GM?
Mark P
9:37
Every day that goes by without the Marlins and Kim Ng announcing a new contract, I kind of wonder about the possibility of Ng going to Boston.
9:38
But since reports have said Ng is staying in Miami, I kind of think the Sox will end up promoting Eddie Romero from within.  That's my pick for the moment, based on nothing but an educated guess

What is your take on Devers' 33/100 season, impressive or disappointing?
Mark P
9:40
There was just enough of a dropoff offensively that's a touch of concern, and the defense is naturally still a concern.  I'm not really that worried about anything since Devers is such a force at the plate, but it's probably time for the Sox to start thinking about a first base move
Or more specifically, a 1B/DH move due to Casas

Showalter interested in the LAA job. Seems like a step backwards for a guy who wants to add a WS to his resume. Your thoughts?
Mark P
9:42
Showalter wants to work, and surely wants a chance to redeem himself after the Mets' 2023 struggles.  Plus, given how Showalter has turned around a lot of struggling teams in the past, he probably feels he can be the guy to finally get the Angels winning again
Blue Jays
9:43
Is Manoah getting moved this offseason? I’m having a hard time gauging his value.
Mark P
9:44
His value is awfully low right now, but surely a lot of teams would have interest thinking they can fix him.

Trading Manoah would be bold for the Jays since there's a strong sell-low possibility, but an argument can definitely be made that the Blue Jays need something bold.

While most fellow Reds fans think we will make a lot of moves in the off season based on managements history I expect little to happen and them to “ stick to the plan”
Mark P
9:46
We aren't far removed from the Reds being quite aggressive with their offseason spending, when they felt their rebuild was over and they were now in "go for it" mode.
9:47
With this core in place now, an argument can be made that making 1-2 significant acquisitions can get the Reds into an Orioles-esque place next year
(Well, the Orioles' place in general, not in the specific "down 0-2 in the LDS" place)

What are the chances any current Pirates are going to be on the roster the next time the team is relatively competitive again?
Mark P
9:50
A very good chance.  The Bucs could be "relatively competitive" as early as next year.
Heck, they were even quite good for three months of this season
Ivan Herrera
9:50
Am I playing for the Marlins next year?
Mark P
9:51
This would be a nice move for the Marlins, they need some catching help in a bad way
Brewers
9:51
Do you think we will make one final push and coax Couns back for another year, or are we going to look at trading Burnes, Woody, and Adames this off-season?
Mark P
9:51
I'd be very surprised if all three of those players were still Brewers on Opening Day.  Woodruff is probably least likely to go if teams are scared off his injuries, so it'll be Adames or Burnes

How come there's no advanced notice about when and what time the weekend chat starts?
Mark P
9:52
It depends on how much other news is going on, or when things are kind of slow. I always hate when I start a chat, and then something major breaks and I have to cut things short

Yamamoto signs for 8/200 over or under?
Mark P
9:54
Slightly under?

I also suspect Yamamoto's deal will have an opt-out after three or four years so he can test the market again quickly

Looking back on off seasons past.  Last year the Orioles did little in free agency and their young players improved tremendously and they jumped almost 20:wins.  Should dbacks contemplate such an off season?  Where would you improve them if you knew they only had a maximum of $20 m to spend?  Thanks Tim
Mark P

Pitching is the most obvious need for Arizona, so that's where I'd allocate the money

Do the Reds and or Orioles make sense for the Giants as trade partners? Young pitching (multiple from the Giants) for a young INF talent? Would that require Harrison from the Giants for any of those young guys? Or would some combo of Wisenhunt, Black, Roupp, Birdsong, Winn, Beck be enough for the Giants to pull something off with those teams?
Mark P
9:57
Whisenhunt being offered would get the other teams' attention. The other guys are good young arms but probably not enough to bring in a difference-maker on their own

Why is everyone ready to hand the NL ROTY award to Corbin Carroll? He has horrible stats. Senga struck out over 200 and Outman contributed to a contender. Those two should get it over Carroll
Mark P
9:59
Horrible stats?  Carroll had better numbers and the D'Backs are a playoff team.

There is no argument for voting Outman over Carroll.  There's more of a case for Senga, maybe, except some voters are also not going to vote for him since he's had such a long track record already in NPB

Do you think it's realistic that Melvin might jump ship to the Giants? USA Today's report that he's the highest paid manager in baseball makes it seem unlikely that he'd walk away from his contract.
Mark P
10:01
It's not like he would be making peanuts in San Francisco.

It does seem like Melvin/Preller will both be staying with the Padres, but that situation still seems imperfect.  If the Padres get off to a slow start next year, Melvin might be out the door

Is there a starting pitching free agent that makes sense for the Braves? I don't see how you can run it back with a revolving door at the #4 and #5 spot.
Mark P
10:03
Strider, Fried, Elder will be the top three, and Waldrep will probably be given every opportunity to win a spot (over all the other candidates) given how the Braves are aggressive with pushing young talent.

So if Morton comes back, that's your starting five right there.  If he retires, Atlanta probably goes after another Morton type of veteran (maybe even also from the southeast) to eat innings and act as a solid mid-rotation arm.

The Cardinals seem to me to be in a pretty deep hole. No pitching, mostly replacement level outfielders, Goldy and Arenado past their primes. I’m surprised Mo isn’t getting heat and very surprised they extended Oli. Your thoughts?
Mark P
10:06
Mozeliak has been getting tons of heat....heck, he was getting heat prior to 2023 for not winning enough!

And Marmol didn't get a contract extension.  He's only signed through 2024, no option years

What kind of deals can Kevin Kiermaier and Harrison Bader expect this off-season? I know the bats and health are inconsistent, but the CF market is weak and many teams seem fine with those kinds of guys logging most of the CF innings if they have a high end glove.
