Hey folks. I'll let the chat room fill up a bit and we'll get started.
Go ahead and hit me with some questions!
Dave
2:06
Gut feeling do yankees sign a cespdes or encarncion?
Jeffrey Todd
2:07
I can see it either way. Not sure I have a gut feeling -- and I'm not sure the Yankees are really committed in either direction. They do have a lot of cash available, especially if they move some dollars owed to McCann and/or Gardner.
Prich

Pirates pick of Walker *or* Paxton for Bell... Who says no?
Jeffrey Todd
2:08
Given that he kinda doesn't have a position, I don't think Bell has shown quite enough as a hitter in the minors to warrant that kind of return. Walker/Paxton are both established MLB pitchers with loads of upside (and plenty of risk, of course).
Just don't see it as a worthwhile roll of the dice for SEA.
Andrew
2:08
any chance the Jays go after a stud reliever this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
2:09
Doesn't seem to be the style of that FO, and if they're going to plunk down that kind of cash for a FA they'd easily be able to afford EE/Bautista. (I assume we are talking Aroldis/Kenley here.)
Nate
2:09
There are 3 closers available and more than 3 teams that need one. Who are some closers that could be moved via trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Well, there are also some teams -- such as the Pirates -- that won't feel strictly bound by having a "closer." It's not unimaginable that even a team like the Giants or Nationals will do something a bit different -- maybe sign Greg Holland and add some of the best set-up guys, I don't know.
2:12
That being said, KC has to seriously consider trading Wade Davis and possibly Kelvin Herrera. The O's miiiiiight listen on Britton. David Robertson may be available. So there are some other outlets.
Austin
2:12
Are the tigers going to trade JD Martinez? Who would be interested? What could the tigers get in return?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
He's their best veteran trade piece. And I guess it's time to cash him in if they want to really get younger and improve the farm, while also staying competitive. The other guys they could theoretically trade are much older and more expensive.
2:14
Really, I don't know what they are going to do. Obviously a Verlander or Cabrera or Kinsler would hold outside appeal, but those dudes ain't young or cheap, so perhaps the return won't quite be what it would need to be. But outside of that trio, you're mostly looking at finding cost savings. So ... dunno, tough spot.

2:15
How is Luke Weaver valued to other clubs?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
I'm not sure. But don't sleep on how good his year was. Obviously fell off a bit in the ERA department in the majors, but he was a beast in the upper minors and got plenty of swings and misses in the majors.
Nate
2:16
How much money would it take for a team to get Otani from Japan?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Not available this winter, but if he was, I could imagine $200MM over some really long term (10 years?). It's hard to say since his case would be sui generis, but he's legit, so I can imagine that.
Mike
2:17
What type of contract would you offer Jake Arrieta? Or would you plan to move on by acquiring a younger arm, though Jake doesn't have all that many innings on his arm for his age?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
They'll probably let it play out at this point. See how next year goes.
I mean, you can't ignore the struggles. But is he going to really take a big discount now? Not sure it's a good time for the sides to chat.

2:19
Do you see eric thames being an impact bat? How big of a contract do you think he will sign?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
That requires a real scouting assessment, not just a statistical look. Obviously his KBO numbers are amazing, and other guys have done well upon transition, and he was considered a MLB talent earlier in his career. I think he'll get 2-3 years at a pretty decent rate -- maybe somewhere in the $5-7MM annual range? -- but may also consider Japan.
Angels
2:21
Trout to Cubs this Offseason for Schwarber, Hayward, Hendricks, and two prospects?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Are you really an Angels fan???
Orioles
2:21
What team could realistically trade for Zach Britton?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Any big-market team, even those with good closers. I mean, can you imagine having him and a high-K guy like Kimbrel in the same pen? "What do we need right now, a K or a groundball?" Snap your fingers, and you get it.

Been seeing a lot of Yankees fans saying that the braves should trade Folty and another top prospect for McCann.
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
I'm sure they would like to see that happen. But it won't.
Brad
2:23
Do you see the Cardinals trading for AJ Pollack or is Blackman a more realistic target
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
Blackmon is more likely to be truly available at a market price. I just have a hard time seeing ARZ selling low on Pollock.
2:25
That said, I don't know how the Cards put a package together. I could see COL asking for Reyes, which STL won't do, and then COL weighing packages that could include pieces like Weaver & Grichuk with some other useful assets (prospects or interesting MLB sweeteners -- Rosenthal, Adams).
Cole
2:26
Best fits for Jon Jay?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
Well, he could fit on like 26 of 30 rosters, so it's hard to say. I expect he'll be prioritizing the opportunity for regular playing time. Likely will end up being something of a backup option, with a team looking to get a sturdy player at a solid value and possible pairing him with a platoon mate of some kind.
Michael
2:27
Which first baseman is likelier to be traded, Freeman or Goldschmidt?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
More or less equally unlikely.
Michael
2:28
Other than Sale, are there any other aces available for trading?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
Archer and Quintana are the other best plausible trade pieces.
Nlck
2:29
With the Rockies one glaring hole really being the bullpen, besides first base, what type of guys do you think they could be looking at in free agency or perhaps, via trade to shore up the pen?
