He'll cash in big this winter, probably landing at least the fourth-biggest deal of any pitcher on the market.  I'd imagine Texas would certainly have interest in re-signing him.

Would the padres agree to a Hunter Greene/ Ethan salas trade?
Mark P
7:49
Uh, why would the Reds be into this trade?  They need pitching badly and have Greene locked up on a long-term deal.  Salas is a heck of a prospect, but this doesn't seem to fit what Cincy is looking for
The Big Hurt
7:49
How about the Sox stop hiring or signing ex Royals, no wonder why we cant be competitive every season
Mark P
7:50
You're upset now, but wait until Getz unveils his time machine and suddenly 1980 George Brett is on the White Sox
David
7:50
Who are the teams in on yuki matsui?
Mark P
7:51
Cubs, Padres, Red Sox, Yankees are the known teams so far, and probably safe to guess that at least 10 more teams have scouted Matsui to some degree
Brothers
7:53
Manoah, Vladdy and Kirk for Both Naylor Brothers and Quantrill.  Who says no?
Mark P
7:54
Guardians.  They might reasonably think their three guys will all be better than the Toronto trio in 2024.  And, since they can't afford to sign Vlad to a long-term contract, they're certainly not giving up the Naylors to land him

As bad as the Cardinals were this year, how possible is it for them to win the Central in 2024? Especially with the Woodruff news and the Cards front office apparently willing to spend on pitching this off-season.
Mark P
7:55
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Cards made a quick bounce-back.  Sometimes, good teams just have a somewhat random "year from hell" where everything goes awry.
Obviously some major work needs to be done on the rotation, but if they can get at least a couple of good arms in there, there's lots of potential for a turn-around

could the Reds shock the baseball worls and sign Ohtani.. he can DH batting after Elly and when he is ready to pitch he joins the rotation?  50+million off the books.. how can they say they cant afford him??
Say they dont get Ohtani, could the Reds Sign Nola and get a right handed hitting outfielder bat that can help the team? what Outfielder thru Free agency or Trade would be a good fit?
Mark P
7:59
I applaud your optimism, but the Reds aren't signing Ohtani.  That would be one of the bigger shockers in sports history, let alone baseball history.

Lots of good veteran OFs on the market who'd be available on a relatively short-term deal.  Bringing Harrison Bader back might work, and (though I could say this about lots of teams) Aaron Hicks is an inexpensive addition

I've never heard the name associated with the Dodgers, but would a Lane Thomas trade to LA make sense? He gives the Dodgers a reliable corner outfielder, who is on a nice controllable contract, and the Nats sure could use some of the prospect depth the Dodgers have. Maybe Thomas for River Ryan and Jorbit Vivas type deal?
Mark P
8:01
The Nats would aim higher than that if the Dodgers came asking about Thomas.  Washington would surely ask for one of the starting pitchers with MLB experience

If you are the Blue Jays president or ownership, would you keep Schneider and/or Atkins?
Mark P
8:05
I lean towards no, at least on the managerial front.

This entire Jays season seemed to be played on eggshells, with the team having to grind through countless close games.  Perhaps Schneider deserves credit, then, for still getting the team to the playoffs despite the lack of hitting and the tough AL East competition, but the Jays' vibe just seemed off all year.  Between the lack of hitting, all the baserunning mistakes, and the high-profile bad decisions in two straight years of playoff games, there's also a lot of on-field stuff that Schneider has to be responsible for
8:06
Atkins obviously isn't free of blame either, since perhaps the vibe being off was due to the front office taking a heavier hand in the on-field decisions, leaving Schneider with less to do.

But in general, I'm not sure running it back with the same management team for 2024 is a great idea

You said 4 th best free agent pitchers who is better than me besides Otahni if you count him
Mark P

My three ahead of Montgomery were Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Snell

Doesn't it make sense to pick up Andersons option? There isnt a better FA option who will be available plus he only had 1 down season
Mark P
8:08
I tend to agree, especially since Anderson has said he's open to moving to second base
Plus, if Anderson goes bounce back, the Sox can still perhaps trade him at the deadline if they're out of contention
Cole
8:09
Opt out?
Mark P
8:10
Gerrit Cole can opt out of his deal after the 2024 season, but the Yankees can overwrite that opt-out by tacking another season onto his contract --- $36MM for the 2029 campaign

If Cole has another great season in 2024, I'd imagine that's a pretty easy decision for the Yankees to just give him the extra year

Is the Redsox “Chief Of Baseball Ops” opening undesirable? Is it the way the front office moves through them or the incumbent Alex Cora?
Mark P
8:12
As per the reports from MassLive this weekend, it seems like these are indeed chief factors

Which make total sense.  If you're a prospective GM, it's one thing to go to a team with high expectations, but another to join a team that might still fire you quickly even if you meet those expectations (i.e. winning a Series)

Rightly or wrongly, there's also the perception that Cora might just be a GM in waiting.  Cora made a point of announcing that he wasn't interested in the job this winter, but for the reason that he was "not ready" to run a front office.  So, if you're a candidate for Boston's job, surely you must be wondering what happens in a few years if Cora did consider himself ready.

is Aaron Hicks a free agent?  Why wouldn't Baltimore keep him?
Mark P
8:18
Hicks is a free agent, and I'd surely imagine that the O's will have interest.

The thing is, most of the teams in the league will have interest since a) Hicks has looked like a new man since leaving New York, and b) the Yankees are covering almost all of his remaining salary.  So Hicks can be signed for just a minimum salary, allowing him to basically pick and choose which contender he prefers to join in 2024

best plan moving forward for White Sox?  Sign 1 yr deals and flip? Sign a big name?
Mark P
8:21
I'm of the mindset that the Sox should rebuild, but I kind of understand their logic in trying to contend since the division is still weak overall.  But man, a lot would still have to go right for Chicago to be real contenders for even a division title next year.

The one-year deal strategy makes some sense, since it's essentially hedging your bets.  Either the veterans to sign to such contracts deliver and the White Sox start winning some games, or if the team isn't in contention, they can at least move those vets at the deadline.

Would Cam Collier and Victor Acosta plus a lower level minor leaguer get Dylan Cease from the White Sox?
Mark P

Nope

Did the Pirates make a mistake drafting Henry Davis 1/1?  They don’t trust him to catch, he’s shaky at best in right and he looked lost at the plate.
Mark P
8:26
It's been not even three full pro seasons for Davis, he was shredding minor league pitching, and he has all of 255 plate appearances in the big leagues under his belt.

Right up there with Jo Adell trade rumors and the bees/beads things, "calming concerns over early struggles from top prospects" is one of the cornerstones of the Weekend Chat
Giants
8:27
You think we have a good shot at Ohtani this winter?
Mark P
8:28
Sure.  The Giants want to add a big star name, and they're feeling the local pressure from fans to put the team back onto the map
