Not to say they'll land Ohtani, but they'll definitely try

King emerging as a SP option gives the Yanks the depth to trade Schmidt, Vasquez, Gomez types for a Gorman/Carlson package?
Mark P
8:30
Given how the Yankees don't know what they're getting with Rodon or Cortes next year, or how King will hold up as a starter, they probably aren't going to be too keen to give up any rotation depth
Maybe if they acquire someone else first, then a pitching trade becomes more realistic

What happens with Juan Soto over this winter?
Mark P
8:32
A trade can't be ruled out, even if I think San Diego is so eager to win that I believe they'll keep him.  Trading Soto is the easiest way to cut their payroll, but there are other ways to shed money without moving your best hitter.

Does Trevor Bauer get multi-year contract offers?  Who are 5 teams that would even consider signing him?
Mark P
8:33
No team is going to want the PR hit or the off-the-field concerns that come with signing Bauer

Did the two starts at the end of the season by Bieber convince the Guardians/MLB Teams that he will have some ability to market for the 2024 season.. Do the Guardians keep him?.. Would you  advocate for a deal to these pitching needy NL clubs (Dodgers/Cardinals/Mets)??
Mark P
8:36
My feeling is that Bieber will be traded, just because that's how the Guardians have traditionally operated.  Perhaps Quantrill is dealt instead, but in all likelihood, Bieber will be elsewhere in 2024.

The Dodgers or Cardinals certainly make sense, and pretty much any team who needs pitching and will be in win-now mode (Orioles, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Phillies if Nola leaves, etc.) will make some calls
8:37
Maybe not the Mets, since if 2024 is a "step back" year or whatever for them, they might not be overly interested in a pitcher only controlled for the one season

Who knows what kind of talks the Braves have had with Max. If they don’t get it done should they move him and what could they get?
Mark P
8:39
The Braves aren't worried about letting prominent players (i.e. Freeman, Swanson) finish their deals and leave in free agency, so I suspect the same will happen with Fried.  You'd guess an extension would have already happened if it was going to happen.
8:40
Trading Fried would obviously get the Braves something good back in return, but Atlanta would have to weigh that against the value of simply having Fried in the top of their rotation, helping them make another run at a title in 2024

What’s a realistic trade offer built around Corbin Burnes for Coby Mayo? One-for-one? One of the teams have to add something?
Mark P
8:41
Mayo and a couple of lesser prospects might do it.
8:42
"Lesser," maybe a top 10-15 guy, and then a lottery ticket type in the lower minors.

Keep in mind that a player who's ranked 10-15 in Baltimore's system would be higher in almost any other system, since the Orioles are so crazy deep in prospects

Should SD just release Matt Carpenter and just eat the $5.5mm they owe him?
Mark P
8:47
Since they're paying him anyway, it probably doesn't hurt to start the season with him to see if a rebound is possible.  But in all likelihood yeah, you have to believe that Carpenter is pretty much close to last on the Padres' depth chart.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Carpenter traded this winter, with another team simply absorbing his salary as a sweetener to get the Padres to agree to the larger part of the trade

Is this the year I make a big free agent deal or trade? Or do i wait until next offseason?
Mark P
8:48
Next offseason, more than likely

What are your thoughts of Donnie Ecker possibly leaving the Rangers to be a manager somewhere else? Giants seem to be a top choice it seems due to his previous time there.
Mark P
8:51
In the same way that the Mets might just be waiting on Counsell, maybe the Giants are waiting on the Rangers' playoff run to be over before speaking with Ecker.  Coaches on playoff teams can interview in between breaks in the series or between series, but it adds another layer of complication to an already stressful time in their lives.  Purely speculatively from me here, but maybe Ecker told them he'd prefer to wait until after the postseason to sit down for an interview
8:52
Of course, that means the Giants could always hire someone in the interim, if any of their other candidates wow them

Does Joey Votto play MLB in 2024? if so for whom?
Mark P
8:55
He'll play somewhere.  It would be kind of a shame if nothing was worked out between Votto and the Reds, and if he did leave, Votto would have plenty of interest on the open market.

Naturally, there's been a lot of buzz in Toronto about the possibility of Votto signing with the Jays and essentially taking Belt's role as the 1B/DH along with Vladdy.  Not sure if Votto has interest in a homecoming, as rumors over the years have hinted that he would prefer to keep his private life in Toronto and his baseball life separate

Has a GM or other high ranking official from an MLB team ever reached out to a member of MLB Trade Rumors and said they saw something "interesting" or "of note" in a chat?
Mark P

Did you see that last question?  Steve Cohen himself just wrote in!
Steve O
8:57
As a Mariners fan, if they dealt an ace level pitcher for a DH who didn't even put up 2 WAR (Casas) this year, I'll lose my mind. I'd rather just sign a 1B like Belt or something
Mark P
8:58
This is why I wrote that the Mariners are much more likely to explore deals for their other pitchers before getting around to even considering moving Kirby.

Or, Seattle could just hang onto everyone, since you can never have enough pitching

Sam Fuld makes a lot of sense in Boston, though there is also the theory that he is Dombrowski's heir apparent in Philadelphia
