Has John Henry ruined the Red Sox reputation by changing GMs/PoBOs so often? Or does the job not look very appealing due to not being able to hire your own manager?
Mark P
7:19
A combination of the two, with the lack of job security being the larger issue.  It has to be a little disheartening for an exec to know that you can win a World Series and still not get any real extra leeway

Alot of people comment about Seattle trading gilbert or kirby for an impact bat. SP is Seattle's strength. That would be stupid to trade one of those. and who would replace the innings of LG/GK? An expensive FA?
Mark P
7:20
I tend to agree, Seattle would certainly move Woo or Miller if they move pitching at all, and it would take a seismic offer to get them to part ways with Kirby or Gilbert.

"You can never have enough pitching" is a cliche for a reason

Moreno/Gurriel Jr. for Varsho. Worst trade in Blue Jays history?
Mark P
7:22
Michael Young for Esteban Loaiza immediately springs to mind
Rockin Randy
7:23
If the Brewers pull the trigger on a Burnes trade, what becomes the plan? One would assume they'd sign a free agent pitcher or two. Anyone spring to mind?
Mark P
7:24
I speculated about this in my Brewers offseason outlook, but maybe Matt Arnold might look to swing another three-team trade.  Brewers get a veteran arm and some MLB-ready young talent, Team B gets Burnes, and Team C gets a package of prospects

Anything on Abreu? Appeal or not.
Mark P
7:25
In fact, I paused the chat for a moment to update our post with the news.....Abreu is appealing the suspension.  So he's available to pitch tonight, and the hearing is tomorrow

Any chance the Royals would trade Bobby Witt Jr? And if so what would it take to get him?
Mark P
7:26
It would take a massive trade haul, but the Royals certainly aren't moving Witt.

Are the Yankees competitive some time in the next 3 years? I don’t see it
Mark P
7:27
They'll absolutely be competitive within three years, including as soon as 2024.  The Yankees still won 82 games last year, and that was with Judge missing two months.

7:28
How much would it cost to get Hoskins to forgo the pillow contract and sign long term? Seems like a golden opportunity for the Nats to pull off Werth 2.0 and grab a key player from the Phillies again.
Mark P
7:28
If you're the Nationals or any other team, however, why would you make a long-term, lucrative offer to a player who just missed an entire season?
Adam
7:29
Is a QO for Maeda too much?
Mark P
7:30
Probably, though Maeda is one of my favourite (somewhat) under-the-radar SP free agent candidates this winter.  I think the team that signs him is going to benefit greatly.
Johan Santana
7:30
I should be a hall of famer, right?
Mark P
7:30
He'd probably get my vote, yeah

7:31
What would you do if you were in Matt Arnold’s shoes? How do address a team that’s limped into the playoffs the last 5 seasons? 1-8 in their last 9 postseason games.
Mark P
7:33
The Woodruff injury is a huge blow, enough to maybe throw off their entire offseason plan.  Maybe they view 2024 now as something of a step-back year, and not rebuild exactly, but trade Burnes and reload for a bigger push in 2025

How many pitchers would the Guardians be willing to trade this year? Bieber is probably one on the block, but would they consider anyone else for an offensive package or does that stretch their rotation too thin?
Mark P
7:34
Quantrill makes sense as a trade chip as well, though moving both Quantrill AND Bieber would thin things out too much
Atlanta fallout
7:34
Any theories as to how do so many Braves' hitters go cold at he same time ?
Mark P
7:35
It was four games.  I'm sure there were multiple times over the course of the season when the Braves lineup cooled off slightly, but over the long haul they were great.
Tim
7:36
Hi, odds of games sevens next two nights?   Thanks
Mark P
7:37
My prediction is that Houston and Philly both end things in six games.
Marky Mark
7:37
I keep hearing about Vlad, but I'm not hearing any whispers of an extension for Bo. Anything cooking?
Mark P
7:38
Bichette was already signed to an extension that covers his arb years (through the 2025 season).  So with that taken care of for the near future, the Jays might not wholly revisit the topic until next offseason, though I'm sure they'll have at least some talks with Bichette's reps to test the waters this spring
7:39
Bichette's performance has also been just inconsistent enough that the Blue Jays might want to see another good year in 2023 before they're convinced he's their guy for the major long-term pact
Altuve
7:39
I am going to be one of the best players ever not in the HOF right?
Mark P
7:40
Oh, I think Altuve is definitely getting into the HOF.  Maybe the writers don't make him first-ballot as "punishment" but he's getting in eventually

Could a Juan Soto trade to St. Louis to be their big star over the next decade happen this winter since they wanted him last year?
Mark P
7:41
A huge megadeal isn't the Cardinals' style, and their interest in Soto last year was probably predicated on the idea of just having him for 2.5 seasons, not the rest of the 2020s.
7:42
Now, it wouldn't be crazy if St. Louis indeed traded for Soto this winter as a one-year splurge, and then let him walk in free agency
Melchez
7:43
Why wasn't Whitaker on the list of potential Hall of Famers?  Isn't he part of that era?
Mark P
7:43
This year's veterans committee focused specifically on managers/umpires/front office personnel.  Not players.

What is on the Playlist tonight?
Mark P
7:44
Eddie Vedder covering the Cure's "Just Like Heaven," which might be just about the best song ever written
