Does the new GM in Boston make a splash to start off? Ownership wants them to compete and the prospects are there to get it done. Maybe pending extension?
Mark P
7:46
It would be some real whiplash if Bloom was hired to build up the farm system....and then was fired so the next GM could immediately sell from that rebuilt farm system for more proven talent.

Not that it's not a possibility, since incoming GMs tend to not have the same ties to prospects that they didn't draft themselves.

If the Yankees trade Torres wo would you have play shortstoplineup p Peraza and Volpe
Mark P
7:47
Peraza is by all accounts the better defensive shortstop, so it makes logical sense to give him the job
Mr Red
7:48
I truly believe the Reds will go big on one free agent, probably a starting pitcher, this off season. Who do you believe is the best fit for the team?
Mark P
7:49
This is another team (like the Cardinals) that would make sense for the Nola/Gray tier of pitchers.
7:50
Giving up a draft pick for a qualifying offer-rejecting free agent (like Nola or Gray) might be a tougher call for a team like the Reds, but they would only have to surrender their third-highest pick of the 2024 draft.  Maybe that's an acceptable loss for a team with so much young talent on hand anyway
7:51
Also don't forget, the Reds get an "extra" draft pick every year anyway due to the Competitive Balance rounds

Former GM Jim Bowden believes the Guardians could be landing spot for Soto if available.  His purposal is Bieber + Kwan for Soto. Thoughts?
Mark P
7:53
I don't see that as enough for the Padres in return
bob melvin
7:53
should i stay or should i go
Mark P
7:54
Didn't know Bob Melvin was a Clash fan, but anyway, only he knows the answer for sure.  If things are really as tense as it seems between him and Preller, then getting the Giants job seems like a perfect out

I think Tim Anderson is the 1 or 2 players primed for a real comeback season. I'm confused on the White Sox not picking up his option. Should I be worried they'll let him walk? Sox don't have anyone in organization to step into his position, although Montgomery, may be ready
Mark P
7:56
Anderson has said he's willing to play second base, which creates another avenue to get him and Montgomery into the same lineup later in the season when/if Montgomery is ready to debut.

I'd also think the Sox will exercise the option.  As bad as Anderson's 2023 season was, he's been so solid in the past that it could be that last season was just an aberration

Looking ahead, the Rangers lose quite a bit of pitching this offseason, are they suitors for Yamamoto and Gray?
Mark P
7:58
They have enough for a full staff already if Dunning is kept in the rotation and if Heaney doesn't opt out.  But, given how aggressive Texas has been in the last two offseasons, they're probably not going to let up now that they've had a real taste of playoff success

Do I start game 7 if we get there?
Mark P
8:00
I think Javier is going to throw another gem in Game 7 if it happens, so it might not matter who Texas starts

Would you rather have the Pirates rebuild or the Nats rebuild at this point?
Mark P

Which rebuild would you rather have at this point?

Pirates (63.8% | 150 votes)

Nationals (36.2% | 85 votes)

Who is more likely to end up in LA between Snell, Nola, and Montgomery?
Mark P
8:05
I'll guess Montgomery, just because the Dodgers had interest in him back at the deadline.

There seems to be several top starters getting close to FA on contenders (Wheeler, Buehler, Fried). Think any make sense in a challenge trade where the selling team gets back several MLB ready controllable pieces?
Mark P
8:07
Fried is the only possibility for your scenario out of that group, and that's only because (as stated earlier) Anthopoulos has been known to make surprising trades.  I tend to think Fried will spend 2024 in Atlanta and then head off in free agency, a la Freeman and Swanson.

8:08
Speaking of Nats rebuild, would the Giants dealing Carson Whisenhunt be enough to headline a deal for Lane Thomas?
Mark P
8:09
That would definitely get Washington's attention, except if the Giants dealing Whisenhunt, they'd probably prefer a player with more team control.  Thomas is only arb-controlled through 2025.
Giants Front Office
8:10
We need to spend! A combo of Yamamoto and Bellinger doable?
Mark P
8:11
It does seem like the Giants are ready and willing to make a blockbuster acquisition this winter, and maybe even two.  The likelihood is that they'll end up with just one marquee guy, since the market will be pretty fierce for the top free agents.

Chris Getz might be a good general manager who is now getting a chance to show that he can do

What do you think the Diamondbacks offseason will look like?
Mark P
8:16
Maybe I should wait for their offseason to begin (whether in a couple of days' time or in a couple of weeks' time) before answering, but the obvious answer is pitching.  The D'Backs have enough interesting young arms on hand that they might only need one good veteran pitcher added to the rotation, but such a pitcher would definitely be a huge boost as a #3 or even a #2 starter
8:17
Beyond that, they'll need a new starting corner outfielder if Gurriel isn't brought back.
Rockies Retirement Home
8:18
It's hard to pitch in Colorado and fa arms probably lose money long term signing there-is it feasible for them to sign guys looking for one last contract to an overpay to see how they do?
Mark P
8:19
While desperate times can call for desperate measures, I'm not sure "overpaying" for guys near the end of the line is going to produce good results very often.
That said, there's no easy answer for the Rockies' pitching problems.
Patrick Corbin
8:20
Worst contract of all time?
Mark P
8:21
Corbin was terrific in the first year of the deal and he helped Washington win a championship.  So, while things went downhill fast, it surely wasn't a disaster
Jim
8:22
O's need starting pitching, but don't really have real money to spend. Who among their prospects do you think they dangle in potential trades? And which teams do you think might trade with them?
Mark P
8:25
I've made this point before, but the O's have the prospect depth to discuss trading for almost anyone.  But, because they have such depth, rival teams tend to inflate the asking price beyond what the Orioles are willing to give up.

There are probably at least a couple of the highly-touted guys that, internally, Baltimore isn't as high on.  So if they can find another team with a good win-now piece who does like the "not as high on" prospects in question, a deal will be made.

It's a tough needle to thread, admittedly, since the Orioles might not know themselves what a lot of their young players can yet do.  They don't want to make a hasty trade and give up on a good player too early.
