The Padres payroll situation is discussed, with Juan Soto the most obvious candidate to move. But given the infield surplus, could shifting course and dealing Bogaerts be possible? Him and Machado are the priciest of the infielders, but Machado is an injury question at the moment.
Mark P
7:57
Bogaerts has a full no-trade clause, for one.  And XB was only good and not great last season, so teams won't exactly be lining up to that absorb such a big contract

Yamamoto to the giants and contract guess?
Mark P
7:58
I think Yamamoto is getting $200MM.  The Giants have motivation to spend big on a star, it's just a matter of whether or not they feel that strongly about Yamamoto in particular

Craig Counsell's contract expires on Oct. 31. The World Series goes beyond that date (Oct. 31 is Game 4). If the Brewers had gone to the WS, would Counsell have left after Game 4? Would they have signed him to a four-day extension? What would have happened?
Mark P
8:00
I don't know the exact language in the contract, but Counsell's deal was almost surely something like "after the Brewers' season is entirely over," with Oct. 31 being the official end date for anything short of a World Series appearance

Does it make sense for the Cubs to go after Hoskins? Maybe a 2 or three year deal with opt outs and incentives?
Mark P
8:03
Hoskins indeed would be a good fit in Chicago.  I do think it'll be just a straight one-year contract, as Hoskins (and Scott Boras) have an eye on a bigger long-term payday next winter after Hoskins has presumably had a healthy and productive 2024.

It's the exact tactic Boras did last year with Cody Bellinger, signing with.....you guessed it, the Cubs

Yeeesh, the Varsho trade doesn't look great so far.  Do you think he recoups some of his value next year or was this just a huge misstep by the front office.
Mark P
8:06
The Kikuchi signing (and the Berrios extension) are two very recent examples of Jays transactions that immediately looked like big mistakes in year one, but then looked better the next season.

So sure, there's still time for Varsho to get on track.  But for the moment, it's a huge miss for a front office that usually has a pretty good track record with trades
And, for as much as their past trades might have worked out, this was the one the Jays couldn't miss on, considering the import of moving a top-tier prospect like Moreno

With the potential to win the Central with a few moves next year, and now that Scott Harris has a year under his belt in Detroit do you see any chance he goes big and signs or trades for a top pitcher (Glasnow, Nola) and some established hitters (Soto, Bellinger)?
Mark P
8:08
Soto or Glasnow are non-starters, as I don't think there's any way Detroit gives up a lot of young talent for a total win-now move.  Even a longer-term big free agent like Bellinger or Nola doesn't seem feasible
8:09
We already saw in Detroit's 2021-22 offseason now jumping too soon on pricey signings can backfire on a team, so I suspect Scott Harris keeps things relatively slow and steady for now
Madison Bumgarner

The D-Backs are looking pretty good in this Fall Classic. If the D-Backs end up with the crown does Mad-Bum earn his 4th World Series Ring over his old Manager?
Mark P
8:10
This reminds me of that scene from the Simpsons monorail episode.

Bumgarner, watching the D'Backs celebrate on the field: It looks like my work here is done.

Barney: What do you mean?  You didn't do anything.

Bumgarner: Haha, didn't I?

Bumgarner suddenly teleports away, to Barney's amazement
Cardinals outfielders
8:11
Just voted on the mlbtr poll on who’s most likely to be moved- which outfielder do you personally think the cardinals are the most likely to trade (and why?)
Mark P
8:11
Of the four names on the poll, my ranking of most to least likely to get traded: O'Neill, Carlson, Edman, Donovan

Any chance at all that Lorenzen is back with the Phils?
Mark P
8:16
I didn't mention much about Lorenzen in my Phillies outlook piece, because he's probably gone.  He didn't pitch well after the trade, and was kind of an afterthought on the playoff roster

Who is Baltimore closer next season?  DL Hall, Cano, free agent signing?
Mark P

Probably Cano

What are the odds salvy gets traded from the royals?
Mark P
8:18
Not terribly high, but the fact that the odds are higher than zero is still interesting since the Royals have been so adamant about retaining Perez for years
8:19
As much as Perez has meant to the franchise, if I'm the Royals and able to get out of that contract with Perez agreeing to waive the no-trade clause, that's a move I lean towards making.  It doesn't seem likely that K.C. will be competitive during the length of Perez's contract
Rangers
8:19
Do you buy the Ohtani-Rangers rumor?
Mark P
8:20
I definitely buy it.  Texas is absolutely willing to spend big, and you'd think Ohtani would have interest in joining a team that looks like it'll be a contender for at least the next few years.
Plus, Texas was on Ohtani's initial shortlist back in the 2017-18 offseason
Trades
8:22
Do you see a Whisenhunt led package being able to Giants a young infield impact bat like Coby Mayo, Nolan Gorman, Encarnación-Strand, Noelvi Marte, Matt McLain, etc?
Mark P
8:23
I love these kinds of trades where teams trade top prospects or young stars for each other.  Such a move would seemingly fit with what the O's and Reds are trying to do, and each team has arguably enough of a surplus of position players to one for a blue-chip young pitcher
Soto to NYY
8:24
could Dominguez be included in a potential deal?
Mark P
8:24
I don't think this works for either party, really.  The Yankees aren't going to trade Dominguez for a year of Soto, and the Padres are probably wary of getting a guy coming off TJ surgery

I know he's won more than he's lost, but how do we really know that Counsell is a good manager?
Mark P
8:27
The Brewers have been a consistently good team for years, despite plenty of rosters that look shaky on paper.

I do agree that "you are what your record is" isn't always exactly true in some situations, yet there's plenty of evidence that Counsell is a very good manager who can get the most out of his players

Does Detroit maximize Skubal’s value and trade him now?  They have several young, promising pitchers in the pipeline.  What might he bring in return?
Mark P
8:29
Skubal isn't going anywhere.  It would take a huge return to get the Tigers to consider a trade, and they're more likely to consider moving any of their other pitchers first
