Am I misdirecting about Nola/Gray in order to sneak in on Montgomery or maybe even Yamamoto and attempt to retain all draft picks for next year?
Mark P
8:30
I'm not sure if "misdirection" is really necessary, since it's known that the Cardinals will be at least checking in on pretty much every available pitcher

Should the Jays consider trading Jansen a year from free agency?
Mark P
8:32
Probably not, considering that Kirk's bat regressed so much in 2023.  And because trading Jansen a year after trading Moreno would just be unusual.

Baltimore has to be the most likely landing spot for Corbin Burnes in an offseason trade right? Is Coby Mayo plus one or two lower prospects a reasonable ask?
Mark P
8:34
On paper, that seems like it might be a good match.  Mayo is obviously a big prospect to give up for one year of Burnes, but if the Orioles think Mayo will be "only" a first baseman over the long term, they might be inclined to take the risk of a trade
8:35
Maybe the better idea is a multi-player trade between Milwaukee and Baltimore, with the O's and Brewers sending another piece or two as part of the trade package

With the retirement of dusty in Houston. Is buck showalter a candidate there?
Mark P
8:37
My guess is that Joe Espada probably just gets the job.

If the Twins need to replace Sonny Gray in the rotation, is their a playoff-caliber starter with multiple years of team control that could be available? Would you consider trading Brooks Lee for a frontline starter to clear up the impending infield logjam in Minnesota?
Mark P
8:40
I'd be very wary of moving Lee.  Frankly, if I had to guess a real surprise trade candidate this winter, the Twins selling high on Lewis might not be completely crazy if they have doubts about his durability
Daniel
8:41
Let's say that if the Rangers fall short of winning it all this year, would you call their 2023 season a successful one after the 2 years of rebuild that they went through?
Mark P
8:41
It is a gigantic success, regardless of the WS result.

Any reason a team could not sign a player to a 10MM a year contact for 40 years to defer salary and lower the AAV to team tax level?
Mark P
8:41
The league would step in to prevent that kind of sneakiness
Guards fan
8:42
Which Cardinals outfielder do you think Cleveland most likely targets? Who do you think is the most likely to get traded?
Mark P
8:44
O'Neill makes a lot of sense as a fit for the Guardians, as he makes a lot of contact and is a good defender
8:45
Since I also think he's probably the OF St. Louis is most likely to trade, seems like some kind of a fit could be found.  Not TON for Bieber straight up or anything, but (I seem to be saying this a lot tonight) perhaps the two could be involved in a multi-player deal
Toney
8:45
who do you think the brewers will sign?
Mark P
8:46
I don't expect Milwaukee to be big players in free agency.  Seems like with the potential for Burnes or Adames to get dealt, the Brewers will use the trade market to bolster their team (either for 2024, for the future, or both)

8:47
You mentioned Yamamoto might get $200 mil.  How many years is that?  I'm thinking 8 and he has opt outs.
Mark P
8:47
That makes sense.  At least one opt-out is very likely, allowing Yamamoto to re-enter the market after three or four seasons, say
Steve
8:47
Who is a player that hasn't come up much but is a likely trade candidate?
Mark P
8:48
Bringing up Royce Lewis might get the Twins fans mad at me, so I should hold off on any more under-the-radar trade candidates before I burn all my bridges

Boston trades Verdugo to Houston for Urquidy. Is there interest on the two sides ?
Mark P
8:49
That would be an interesting one, I kind of like the idea for both teams there
8:50
I guess maybe after last season, the Astros might want to retain as much starting pitching as they can, but Urquidy does seem to be a bit of an odd man out
Walter Alston
8:51
Gavin Lux a better fit at 2b or ss ...........or both?
Mark P
8:51
Just getting him on the field at this point is the chief concern.  The Dodgers will try him at SS first, but I kind of see second base as Lux's ultimate position
Rocco rox
8:52
Any hope at all for the Rockies in the next 5 years?
Mark P
8:53
Five seasons is a long time, as evidenced by the fact that five seasons ago, the Rockies were coming off consecutive playoff berths and looked to have things on track
8:54
I can't say I'm super optimistic about Colorado's chances, but all it takes is one prospect to break out or one unexpected signing to overachieve, and something might get cooking
I disagree
8:56
I respectfully disagree with your assessment of who the Cards will trade.  My reasoning is Carlson and O'Neill do not bring back the kind of pitching they will be looking for.  I also think they want to keep Edman in the event Winn doesn't make the transition to ML SS.  Ergo - Donovan is the obvious trade chip along with one of Carlson/O'Neill.
Mark P
8:56
Maybe I'm just really high on Donovan, but I see him as a great guy to have on a roster, since he can check off so many boxes.

8:57
How much value does Josh Naylor have and could you see a trade now that they have Manzardo?
Mark P
8:59
Naylor has two years of arbitration control remaining, so it's probably just about that time for the trade rumors to start swirling, given how the Guardians usually operate. An extension is certainly possible, even if Naylor is a bit older and closer to free agency than most of Cleveland's traditional extension targets.

Do I think a trade happens this winter?  No, because the Guardians badly need hitting and moving their second-best bat seems counter-productive. They also have no idea yet how Manzardo can perform at the big league level.
A question
8:59
I just want to know your opinion, do y’all think the postseason format is broken?
Mark P
9:00
Nope.  Upsets happen all the time in the playoffs, both in this format and past formats.  That's just the nature of a short series
Pete
9:02
With the DBacks making a run to the WS, do you see them making any moves in FA to try and continue to be competitive?
Mark P
9:03
Not some mega-deal or something, but after this taste of success, the D'Backs will absolutely look to keep things going.  Their long-term payoll picture is pretty clear, and 2024 is the last year they owe Bumgarner any money
